GF Advice - - - What play/musical should I see

Recommended Posts

I just bought a pair of tickets to see Wicked in Cleveland on my GF's insistence. Broadway musicals can be entertaining, I wouldn't worry about it too much -- if it's playing in Chicago, that means it was successful enough to get a road show, so it's probably pretty enjoyable.

Toby from Red Scare loves Broadway musicals, I shit you not. I saw him in Chicago about two weeks ago and he was talking my ear off about Jersey Boys. Again, I shit you not.

she isnt a theater girl I just figured chicks like that stuff i was thinking like lion king or cirque de solie or something thats pretty popular and bigger budget.

uh, yeah, "chicks" don't just "like that stuff."

Personally I'd be annoyed as hell if someone thought I wanted to go to a play, haha, but cirque de soleil would definitely be more entertaining in my opinion.

Cirque De Solei is not something I'm into. I saw it one time and I thought it was just too corny. too much art not enough acrobatics

My wife loves musicals and we've seen a lot together (Wicked, Jersey Boys, The Drowsy Chaperon, Spamalot, Sweeney Tod) the funny ones are generally pretty good. I would highly recommend Spamalot. The bigger productions are just fun for the sheer size and scoop of the stage and set up. I do my best to steer clear of the "serious" plays though. That's just not my deal

my wife loves this kinda stuff. in the past 3 yrs i've gone to about 15-20 musicals/operas in the bay area and in LA. some good, some bad. but my wife is 22 and is about to be a music teacher...so she lives for this kinda stuff. she is also a voice major at san jose state (sings classical french, spanish, german pieces) blows my voice out of the water. i say go for it. find something cool that you both may enjoy. you both might end up liking it more then you know.

I saw a few plays with my fam in NY, and Wicked and Lion King were both pretty impressive. Lion King was really cool because of the props/costumes, the way they did the animals was really awesome. But it also had a few really strange parts. I saw Cirque a few years ago, and did not enjoy it at all, but I think it might really depend on which show it is. It seems like even people that see big shows, even if they aren't musical theatre kind of people, can enjoy the show and respect what goes into it.

I love musical theater and my wife can take it or leave it. Go figure. That being said I've heard great things about the Adams Family production, Dreamgirls is fantastic show with great music, though if you've seen the movie you might not care, An Evening with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin would be a dream night for me (Mandy is Indigo from the Princess Bride) as both of those people have voices that just soar, Jersey Boys is something I think everyone would love since they already know the music for the most part (Franky Vallie and the Four Seasons FTW), and Young Frankenstein got great reviews, and while I haven't seen the show I really love the soundtrack. Back to my closet.

I really like musicals, I played in a couple orchestras in high school/college for musicals. they write in some fucked up keys. havent been to a musical in quiet some time..

dont just limit yourself to musicals though for you and your girlfriend. Chicago has an incredible theatre and dance scene as well. there is just so much going on in the arts in that city, its insane.

If you're looking for theater in Chicago that's not musical, I HIGHLY recommend checking out "Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind," which is in its 20th year -- they (attempt to) do 30 plays in 60 minutes, and it is a blast. Lots of funny stuff, some serious stuff, plenty of off-the-wall stuff. Seriously, I highly, highly recommend going.
