no, but i'm guessing you want to know because you're curious how often i listen to alkaline trio. and to answer that question, you'd be surprised at how infrequently i do. they're one of my top 10 most-played artists, for sure. probably top 5. but i listen to lots of different things.

You guys are all ridiculous. It is SO easy to tune out sound you don't like. No one is forcing you to actively pay attention to it. And there's certainly worse things out there than T-Pain.

And you really shouldn't pay off a house in full anyway, unless you're getting a huge break by doing so. You can smartly invest the money you'd be paying and make more than your mortgage interest rate, just be sure to have the money ready to pay each month.

Someone said $500,000 isn't life-changing money? My mom raised 3 kids alone on less than 50K a year. That's 10 years of working for her. You're going to say that's not life-changing with a straight face? Especially since just about everyone here is young, so if you're not an NBA player or MC Hammer, you can turn that money into a RIDICULOUS retirement fund. What's that investment rule, with 7% interest (real) it takes about 10 years to double, DOUBLE, and you have 3 or 4 decades before you retire for it to double.

You guys really are ridiculous. I fully grasp this is a dumb hypothetical, but most of you are out of your mind or already millionaires if you can't take that.

Therapy?! You're just dumb.

I'm not sure of anywhere outside of being damn near perfect at the stock market where anyone can make 4% or more on investments right now.

You don't go in and try to be anything "at the stock market". You put money in funds and let it expand over time. Over the last 75 years or whatever, nothing has had better returns than the S&P500. Outside of short term drops, it is always rising.

Unless you actually believe the market is going to die, now is a great time to hop in because it's down from what it "should" be.

http://www.google.com/finance?q=INDEXSP%3A.INX <-- the graph at the bottom of the big graph shows it well enough how it's been increasing. Max the time frame out if it isn't already.

Don't want highjack this highly important question posed here but I honestly do not believe the "benefits" of paying an interest rate on your mortgage outweigh the benefits of not. All the interest is thrown away. Even if you're in the highest tax bracket more than half of the money is just gone. If you invest the half that's just thrown in to the fire you'll do better than using the money from the interest on your house as a tax write-off.

Over the span of a 30 year mortgage it is hugely beneficial to start investing with twice the principle and deplete it slowly than to start with the money you'd have left after paying off your house.

But whatever. I'm still disgusted by either everyone's musical snobbiness (you'll need therapy from listening to T-Pain?) or their disregard for the value of money.

What if you accepted the offer, and then stopped listening to music all together?

I could maybe play a track from T-Pain once a week if that were the circumstance, and then you wouldn't be breaking any rules, really, because you'd still be listening to him exclusively.

You think its snobby to say you could not listen to one artist for 10 hours a day for an entire year? Maybe its a sign people have better taste than to do whatever for money. Frankly, a year of my life is worth a whole lot. Especially if that year is going to be plagued with horrendous music I don't like as its soundtrack.

Over the span of a 30 year mortgage it is hugely beneficial to start investing with twice the principle and deplete it slowly than to start with the money you'd have left after paying off your house.

In terms of what you gross I agree but I'm not sure its nets out in your favor.

We can calculate exactly how much your year is worth, actually, but it's a long tiring process. I'm willing to bet the impact of listening to music of your choice doesn't raise or lower your year's worth that much, and I would bet every cent I'll earn for the rest of my life it doesn't change your year's worth by more than half a million dollars. I'd probably make that bet changing the number to just $100,000.

Personally, an enjoyable year of my life is priceless. And music makes it even better. I'm not missing shows and listening to something I loathe for that long. But more importantly missing out on stuff whereby listening makes things much, much better.

Bidding for my year would start at a cool $5 million.

The thing about economics is that they can actually give anything a price. Hell, the government makes decisions based on the average person's life, and it is significantly less than a million dollars. (not saying you value your entire life for that little).

The thing is though, by your revealed preferences - your salary/wage and how much time you spend working, what you do when you have free time and how much that costs, what you're willing to take off of work for, how much time you sleep, and on and on and on. You indirectly place an exact monetary figure on your year's worth of activity, and it certainly will not add up to $5 million.

Your $5 million is your stated preference, but stated and revealed preferences are rarely the same.

How much material does T-Pain have, really? My problem wouldn't be the (clearly) low quality of the music, but that I would be listening to the same low quality music over and over and over.

If I was allowed to substitute an artist I think is equally as bad but has a much higher output of material, Lil' Wayne for instance, I could do it fairly easily. But I would still ask for at least $200,000.

I would definitely do this. If it would pay off my student loans it would be worth it.

The only issue I see arising is that if you have to listen to one artist for a year what happens if you go out to dinner and they aren't playing T-Pain? Would you have to ask them to put it on? And if you're a musician can you not play music unless it's T-Pain?
