tylerrr
With the popcorn texture they use on some ceilings? I'm not too sure what purpose it serves if any... Thoughts?
AlexH.
It's cheaper than a smooth finish. I think.

rtw88
Yeah, it's cheaper because they just have to spray it on. My parents whole house is stuccoed inside and out, walls and all, although the walls are smoothed out somewhat.
batman
i always wondered why walls are textured. would smoothed walls look weird?
chiefwahoo
I'm in the process of replacing a popcorn ceiling. Thanks to Google, I found out it might contain asbestos. Lovely.

blanketbyday
Popcorn ceiling may contain asbestos, shit is cheaper than smoothwall / paint. You can get into trouble removing that shit yourself, with the EPA or something or other since it is totally harmful to anyone down wind if you do not seal the Area. srcvinyl
yes popcorn is likely to contain asbestos so wear a mask when replacing. Google what years asbestos was used in ceilings and you will better find out. The reason you use stucco (we just went through what you are about to do with the new PRC/Shopradiocast offices) is because its hard to make a ceiling flat and nice looking when removing old stucco. People PREFER non stucco'd ceilings, but it hides those imperfections. Some guy quoted us $300 to do the third floor (about 350 sqr feet) and we should of did it!! BY the time Danny bought all the supplies it was $290. Not to mention, removing it was a pain in the ass, potentially exposed me to asbestos (i did the removal) and putting it back on was even worse!! chiefwahoo
The popcorn "paint" started coming off due to some water damage. So once I found out about the asbestos potential, I immediately took it to get tested. I was told that based on age and visual inspection, it's very unlikely to contain asbestos. Still waiting on official word from the lab, though. They told me that the kind containing asbestos is the more expensive type so it's not always as prevalent as people think. Basically, everything the experts told me is different from what the internet/EPA was saying, so I'll let the test give me the right answer. nicole
its much easier and cheaper because they dont have to worry about making it look perfect.
