loveisdrunk
It's a sad day. Easily my favorite band of the 00s, if not ever. I am not surprised, but I am completely devastated. Their statement: The white stripes would like to announce that today, February 2nd, 2011, Their band has officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live. The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both meg and jack are feeling fine and in good health. It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve What is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way. Meg and jack want to thank every one of their fans and admirers for the incredible support they have given throughout the 13 plus years of the white stripes’ intense and incredible career. Third man records will continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings from The White Stripes in their vault Subscription record club, as well as through regular channels. both meg and jack hope this decision isn’t met with sorrow by their fans but that it is seen as a positive move done out of respect for the art and music that the band has created. It is also done with the utmost respect to those fans who’ve shared in those creations, with their feelings considered greatly. With that in mind the band have this to say: “the white stripes do not belong to meg and jack anymore. The white stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.” sincerely meg and jack white the white stripes

chaz725
I wish it was April Fools Day and not Groundhogs Day so this could be fake. Fucking bummed.
seamoney
Although this announcement has seemed inevitable for over a year, it still really sucks :/

xjustinxschwierx
Not really a fan of this band, however, mad respect for them to not beat a dead horse. also remember that no bands break up anymore, and inevitably they will play again somewhere down the road. kirbypuckett
There will probably be a reunion in 5 years at a festival. Bummed I never got to see them.
kidamnesiac
There will probably be a reunion in 5 years at a festival.Bummed I never got to see them. I would not be surprised if this happened. It sounds like they don't hate each other or the band, but are just done making new music with 'The White Stripes' moniker.
melikecheese
I wish more bands would call it quits while on top and not just keep on living forever and sucking ass.
dreamover
Meg eventually stopped ever wanting to play live again. Jack talked about just being a studio band after icky thump (like the Beatles, circa sgt. pepper). He talked about a new record last year. My guess is they tried making a new record, but ultimately decided to leave things as they were. That their body of work was left better untouched. Gotta give them props for that. Icky Thump is kind of a great record to go out on. Also, The White Stripes don't seem like a reunion-tour type of band. If they play again, it's because the gods of rock and roll came to both jack and Meg in a dream and gave them the best Stripes record ever. I wouldn't hold my breath. tomdeadbeat
I was at their second show in Detroit. I was pretty amazed at what they evolved into. Meg was still learning to play drums that night!
nicole
no big loss in my honest opinion.
Guest kingbuzzo
For some reason I just assumed they had broken up so it's not a huge loss. I didn't really care for the last two albums anyway. They were great when I saw them on the tour for "Elephant" though. "Black Math" rips.
almightyseancore
i really only liked destil and white blood cells anywho, and never got a chance to see them live. but i feel they are really over rated when it comes to them being "legends" or "influential" or anything like that. anyone who makes too big of a deal out of this is silly, even the band admitted it was for the best.
