So healthcare + politics = taxes.

And immigration + politics = amnesty

The high court’s ruling leaves in place 21 tax increases in the health-care law costing more than $675 billion over the next 10 years, according to the House Ways and Means Committee. Of those, 12 tax hikes would affect families earning less than $250,000 per year, the panel said, including a “Cadillac tax” on high-cost insurance plans, a tax on insurance providers, and an excise tax on medical device manufacturers.

I don't mind paying taxes. They're a necessary part of living in a first world country. I'd rather pay taxes and be able to get the medicines and treatment I need than not being able to afford private healthcare. I think the vast majority of the country would think the same way if we weren't so divided simply for the sake of division.

EDIT: ie Madie's post above.

I would imagine this "tax" would fall squarely on lower income or middle class families. I can't imagine a bunch of $250,000+ households don't have some type of care already.

If I had any faith in the for-profit insurance sector I'd say the broader base and shared burden should reduce costs for everyone. While understanding that some households see a net increase in payment (from zero) I'm generally for that arrangement.

But. I have zero faith in those companies so I imagine everyone will pay more whilst simultaneously getting equally fucked.

I can't wait to move to canada.

take me with you? pwease?

Yeah, let's all go to Canada because now we have mandatory (not even universal) health care! That'll show Obama we don't agree with his crazy socialist agenda!

Oh wait, that makes no sense, because Canada has universal healthcare. And all of Europe. And most of South America. And Australia. And Russia. etc. etc. etc.

The major problem is that the health care industry is still for profit, meaning they're still going to squeeze every penny out of you they can. As long as greedy corporations/people are in control there are going to be problems. I vote for socialized medicine like Canada or Europe, but at least hopefully health insurance will be affordable for me come 2014. We'll see.

wow. I had a big long reply typed up but fuck it. not everyone is as 'uninformed' about canada as you may think, and maybe I should have been more clear about my statement, but I actually AM moving there at the end of this year. I live in one of the most dangerous cities in the US, we've had 25 shootings in the past 3 weeks. As far as I'm concerned Canada is a welcome retreat.

Wasn't really trying to pick on you, but in the context of this thread there's really no other way to read your comment. Unless you added more information.

Bingo! We have a winner!

It's a major problem when the bottom line is to maximize profit for the sake of your company's shareholders and NOT to see that poeple are healthy and get the crucial medical coverage they need/deserve.

I am a bit salty due to the fact that I had to get eye surgery 2 weeks ago, and lost my health insurance a week before I found out I needed it.

That does suck, but just moving to Canada won't fix it, you have to become a citizen of Canada to get the universal healthcare just fyi

No dude that's not how it works, you just cross the border then you can get all the drugs and free chiropractor appointments and vision tests you want! I've seen the movies...
