  1. Yeah because Ahab just wanted some 1 out of 3,000 whale that wasn't even sought after until it wasn't readily available at FYE. I get what you're saying (and I am being a devils advocate prick) but I look at this like I look at the use of the word "love". Everyone "loves" everything now a days from the newest NOFX album to chili fries, it sort of takes away from it. While the term certainly can be subjective to a person (how one interprets it to their own life) it still seems like a real "white whale" should be something that is in keeping with the original work (Moby Dick). It was a thing of near mythic proportions that many questioned if it even existed. If something is regularly up for sale (even if it goes for $200+ like some records) it's not a white whale. One could buy it simply by running up some debt or by saving. I feel a white whale is devoid of monetary sense, it's simply something that is impossible to find. It's a piece that you would give nearly everything for. Hopefully you don't kill a ship full of men to get it, but you would. But hell that's just me. I take it back. I don't hate you on the internet.
  2. It's not really about "changing" a classic book but debating what the author was trying to say with it etc. I think there's a collage out there with a whole course dedicated to it. To play the devils advocate "White Whale" could still be appropriate in the situation that I find it inappropriate because you could say it isn't about the rarity of the while itself but the fact that Ahab wanted it so dearly. It's just in my time i've never heard the term so liberally applied to uncommon records. I'm used to hearing it in terms of shit there were 100 of made in 1978 and weirdos actually tracking down the parents of band members to see if there are any in their basement...and being successful. Now that is a record hunt!
  3. Because in reality it really doesn't matter what people consider the definition of the term to be I guess I really don't care. But it's just weird to be a music fan collecting records for 15 years and having the definition being one thing and all of a sudden this wave comes along and terms it something else. Especially when the new definition seems to contradict what I always felt was the true meaning. Once again who really cares I guess...it's just odd. Soon a "hitter" will mean any record over $10. What's hilarious is this could easily devolve in to a serious literary discussion about the meaning of Moby Dick that could take years to eventually never be fully resolved.
  4. I think a lot of it has to do with the huge influx of new vinyl collectors. They aren't yet familiar with our nerdy lexicon.
  5. I would seriously pay a little extra a month if Ebay would start storing at least a years worth of auction history. 30 days ain't nearly enough and I think popsike is a seriously weak substitute.
  6. I think the term "white whale" needs to be more strictly defined. I know it's sort of a personal definition but to me a "white whale" is something that they made very very few of and is highly unlikely that you'll ever find. Thus the whole reference to moby dick. There's like one in the world and you want it. An LP they made even a couple thousand of isn't a "white whale" it's a record that's being sort of a bitch to find but will more than likely show up. This isn't a reference to anything in this thread...just a general bitch. Maybe ya'll could start calling them Grey Whales. It's something you might not see every trip out but eventually it'll pop up.
  7. Against Me! S/T? If not, in all seriousness I'm only looking for fairly retarded stuff at this point. However if anyone has the following fairly reasonable stuff you got yourself a sale Dillinger Four "Vs God" LP (Gray) Modest Mouse "Heart Cooks Brain" 7" Jawbreaker "Chesterfield King" 12"
  8. That sounds like an excellent idea! I surely wish you weren't being sarcastic. That Bullet 7" is something I've always wanted. Thought I should at least try haha.
  9. Just wanted to bump this to the top. It ends in less than 10 hours.
  10. I've got one if you want to get rid of that 2nd press Bullet on Red 7".
  11. Came out last year on Yo Yo Records out of Germany. They pressed 500 copies. All Black. I'm pretty sure it's sold out everywhere at this point. US pressing coming soon from 1-2-3-4 Go! Records.
  12. That thing has been bootlegged a number of times over the last 10 years at least. What you have is probably a bootleg of a bootleg. Thus the same number showing up.
  13. UK copies are fairly hard to come by but you should be able to get one for around $20 no problem. Definitly not a white whale situation. There had to have been at least over 100,000 of these pressed back then. They were massive when that record came out.
  14. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=160202896678&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT Just went up. Figured someone on this bored would be interested.
  15. Yeah I think there was a German edition of Dub 56. I can't remember the name of the label right now though. I think everyone had a 7" or two but I definitly never saw any LP's for The Scofflaws, Skavoovie or Easy Big Fella. I'm suprised people remember EBF actually. Didn't they have a song called Lucky Donkey? They were one of the funniest bands I saw of that era. I think that show was EBF, Skavoovie and the bosstones actually
  16. For all you completist super fans http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=160200151072&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT
  17. I mean you should be able to find early toasters stuff for sure. That was actually on a few different labels in the 80's (sadly I just sold all mine) and I think you can still get the first Slackers on vinyl from Special Potato or whatever their label is called.
  18. Sadly a lot of the Moon Ska stuff you're looking for were CD only. As a dude fully obsessed with that stuff as it was happening that was pretty much the only format barring a few 7"s and maybe some German imports.
  19. United won't do heavier than 140 for colored vinyl it for some reason.
  20. I think Very Emergency is the best but there are some great songs on Wood/Water. I think it's a shame what happened to this band after this record came out. I feel like if they'd put it out in the last year or so there would have been a totally different reaction to it.
