  1. So what are you saying? That he did nothing wrong and just decided to pay $25 mill because it was annoying, or that our president-elect founded a fraudulent university and decided to pay $25 mill to avoid paying more? Is this what Trump meant about being a great negotiator and always winning?
  2. Aside from him alluding to (and seemingly bragging about) not paying income tax for the last ~20 years? "I'm under a routine audit. You'd have to be crazy to release your tax returns while you're under audit." In related news, Trump settled his Trump U case for $25 million... http://money.cnn.com/2016/11/18/news/trump-university-settlement/index.html And from the big cheese himself:
  3. like ben is suggesting, the money's gotta come from somewhere. the federal budget is currently $3.8 trillion and the population is somewhere around 300 million, so that's ~$12k per person. let's assume half the population can't work (whether they're kids, old people, can't find a job, lazy, whatever), and (to make things easier) let's pretend that we can only tax income, not spending. so now we're at ~$24k per person, which is ~equivalent to what someone making $130,000/year would pay under Trump's plan. I can't remember what income percentile that would be, but that's gotta be around the top 10% or so (at least), which means 90% of tax payers really should be paying a lot more than they currently do. anyhoo, you can see how this works out. it simply isn't feasible to make everyone pay the same dollar amount, so you know (and apparently you agree, based on your "%" comment above) that the rich need to pay more to make the math work. how you do that is up for negotiation, but there's really no way around it, hence my belief that we should all have the ~same "tax burden". since I'm a statistician, not an econometrician, I won't pretend to know how best to estimate one's "tax burden"
  4. if I'm rich, why should I pay more $ than you? I walk on the same sidewalk as the less rich people, and my street needs a snow plow in the winter just as much as yours does
  5. btw, I like math, so I made a plot of the savings x income under Trump's tax plan (single individual, standard deduction). people with incomes below $190k will save a couple thousand, while people with incomes above $413k will stand to save a lot more. obviously, this is ignoring other types of situations like having kids and being a single parent, where I believe Trump's plan increases your taxes.
  6. Depends on what you mean by the "same tax", I suppose. Should everyone pay the same $ amount? Should everyone pay the same %? Or should everyone feel the same "burden"?
  7. I'm curious if we'll be able to open it without using the pull-tab. Based on the picture below, the path of least resistance is probably to carefully go through the glue that seals the sleeve shut...
  8. if you like math, you can check things out for yourself http://www.npr.org/2016/11/13/501739277/who-benefits-from-donald-trumps-tax-plan
  9. just to follow-up, my record simply had a nasty scratch going through the majority of "Finish It". The rest of the record sounded fine, and Mondo said they'd send me a replacement. great customer service experience
  10. In my defense, I've moved from MN -> MO-> GA-> AL -> PA over the past ~3 years, so there's no telling where it happened.
  11. As a liberal who generally doesn't like protest marches and whatnot (they rarely seem aimed at the right target), my question would be "What % of these folks actually voted against Trump?" or, more specifically, "What % of these folks actually voted for Hillary?" If it's not 100%, then those who didn't should be protesting against themselves.
  12. mine pops every time around throughout the first or second track on the B side. I haven't "looked" at it carefully yet to see if there's anything visibly wrong with it
  13. What I really can't understand about the exit-poll data you posted is that 10% of Obama supporters voted for Trump and 6% voted 3rd party. After everything that has happened during this campaign season (the racism, the sexism, the emails, everything), that is the hardest for me to understand. Hillary was essentially running as Obama's third term, and 16% of his supporters voted against it...
  14. Nothing in John Podesta's emails is bigger than the Tom DeLonge emails about UFOs. That is a fact that cannot be disputed.
  15. Just watched "Before the Flood" -- great documentary. Only downside is that it made me wonder if I should be buying a vinyl record (or two, depending on what Invada is doing) of the soundtrack or just a digital download... Sorry, future citizens of the world!!!
  16. I'm very intrigued by this (despite not really remembering what the soundtrack to Bates Motel sounds like). How have iam8bit's picture discs sounded in the past? I'm seeing some bad reviews for their Journey Soundtrack, but then they did a new pressing...? I understand that picture discs generally have a bad reputation, but it seems to vary by label / pressing plant
  17. Someone asked Trump about this, and his response was "I'm supposed to care because they're homeless? I prefer people who have homes." When he was told that the person was holding a "Vote Trump" sign, Donald reportedly said "The homeless are great people. No one has more respect for the homeless than I do."
  18. part of me wants to buy all 4, thinking that I could always resell them later and turn a profit, but the other part of me realizes that I never sell anything and probably don't need 4 copies of this album on my shelf. decisions, decisions...
  19. Got my download this morning, and I'm happy with my purchase. Looking forward to getting the physical copy whenever that happens, and I'm looking forward to watching the documentary in a couple of weeks.
  20. If we're arguing about ~transparency and things like that, I will agree that the Clinton Foundation accepting foreign donations is questionable. There should at least be a process where foreign donations to foundations associated with federal officials need to be approved (e.g., questions like "How does this donation impact your official duties as ____?"). I'm biased, but I'd like to think that the vast majority of donations the Foundation received would have been approved with bipartisan support. I suppose I'd also want Trump (or any Presidential candidate for that matter) to disclose all of his foreign dealings so they can undergo a similar approval process. If we're comparing their women's rights and human rights records, I think Trump's international dealings are equally relevant. It might make business-sense to use child labor in China, but is it morally responsible? Nope. And that's ignoring his whole "We should make [insert company here] make their products in America"-argument.
  21. I know lots of people have changed their beliefs over time. What's unclear is if: They legitimately changed their beliefs as they matured (better late than never...?) They've always been anti-LGBT rights and are only publicly supporting LGBT rights now to be politically expedient They've always been pro-LGBT rights and used to publicly oppose LGBT rights to be politically expedient I like to be optimistic. But yeah, I wish Clinton, Kaine, and Obama were more outspoken in support of LGBT rights earlier in their careers. In the meantime, I'll settle for what we have. And I agree with you regarding Trump. I think he's a con man who will say whatever he needs to say to get people's support. I'm legitimately impressed by the way he's been able to convince ~40% of the population otherwise.
  22. I was making two different points. Ivanka (the daughter) is supporting her father, someone who has been accused of rape and sexual assault -- including the rape/assault of her own mother. Hillary supported her husband, who was accused of rape/assault. Outside of that, Hillary has a record of supporting women's rights politically, and I'm not sure what Ivanka thinks. That's where I'm comfortable saying "Hillary is better than Ivanka on women's issues, both of which are light years ahead of Donald," without the need to equate Hillary's trangressions to how Ivanka has supported her father. You could replace any Trump child in place of Ivanka here, but Ivanka seemed like the obvious choice. Ivana (the wife) accused Donald of raping her. Hillary hasn't been accused of raping anyone. Thus, I don't see how you can equate Hillary's ~transgressions to Donald's. Is that more clear?
  23. Is enabling and covering up sexual assault less horrific than committing rape and sexual assault? Yes. Was that a serious question? As for taking funds: What are Hillary and the Clinton Foundation doing with said money? Who has Trump accepted money from over the course of his business career, and what has he done with that money? Does Trump outsource the production of Trump ties, etc. to countries with great human rights records? Does the Trump Foundation have a good reputation? How about Trump University? I don't see this argument working in your favor...
