  1. You can usually find a vintage Marantz 2230 in good condition for around 250-300. They are pretty well respected. They sound and look great too. I love mine.
  2. ajxd, I assume you're talking about my illustration, not the actual photo the other guy posted? Anyways thanks for chiming in, I had not considered the distance between the reciever and turntable. I estimate that it would take a 6' interconnect to link them up, which would I'm sure be less than ideal. How about this though, what if I had a phono preamp right next to the turntable, then a longer cable running to the receiver? Would that shorter distance between the 'table and where the signal is actually boosted effectively solve the problem of to distance to the receiver? As far as weight is concerned I will most likely fabricate an under structure from steel running the length of the horizontal shelf, so that the shelf itself would not support its own weight.
  3. Oh ya, and you can get a bunch of Wilco for around $14.60 each - that's $10 cheaper than the average normal price.
  4. Awesome deals. Just got Pablo Honey for $6.23 and Penny Sparkle (the recent Blonde Redhead album) for $5.60.
  5. The Hastings code is good. I just got quite a bit of stuff for 30% off. Interestingly enough there are several of the Beatles reissues on sale individually, so with the sale plus the code I got Abbey Road and Revolver for $11.20 each. Well $12.20 each if you factor in the $1 per item shipping, but still that's a pretty crazy good deal. http://www.gohastings.com/catalog/search_all.cmd?keywords=the+beatles&condition=0&Ntk=Keyword&department=AllSearch&N=2457&search-button.y=0&departmentName=AllSearch&Ntt=the+beatles&search-button.x=0&productType=0&source=global&search=true&form_state=global-search-form-form&form_state=siteSearchForm&Ne=2457
  6. That would be ideal, but we live in a small place right now, so it's all basically in the living room. We can't really lock the kids out of there very easily without totally disrupting normal life. "edit: also, how good at climbing are your kids? because if they climb, a full expedit could severely injure, if not kill a toddler easily." I won't be anchoring it to the wall using the Ikea anchors, I'll be putting heavy hardware into the wall studs at multiple points to insure that it goes absolutely nowhere.
  7. Whew. So I literally just finished combing through all 125 pages of this thread (over the last several days). I've been taking in ideas and racking my brain on how to mod my setup to make it kid-proof. I have a four year old who is actually quite trustworthy and a 1.5 year old who is a little master of destruction. There's also a steady stream of neighbor kids etc who would put my stuff at risk even if I knew that my kids were careful enough. Anyways, there was surprisingly little good info here on child proofing, but I did glean a lot of useful tidbits. Here's what I came up with. If it works, hopefully some other parent can benefit the experience. In order to make this work I had to sell it to my wife so I made a mock up in illustrator. The scale is correct for all of the different components: my tv, receiver, turntable, speakers, expedits, etc. It was actually a lot of fun to work it up. I live a long ways away from an Ikea so I needed to make sure everything would fit right structurally for logistics sake. I'm probably only able to fill those four squared with vinyl at this time, all the others would be for my wife to organize how she would like. So the answer to the child proofing question is height. Therein also lies the problem. That is the danger structurally of having all that weight up there, especially with how the expedits are built. What I'll end up doing is some major reinforcement to the 1x5 bridge section. Some sort of steel bars to span beneath it, as well as some metal straps/brackets on the back section. I dunno but that will have to be substantial. The two verticals have the upper middle divider removed to provide space for the turntable and receiver. I'm aware that this will also compromise the integrity of the structure, but hopefully some reinforcement of the back will help enough. After that anchor it all together, and anchor again to the wall and bam. I know it's not good to have the speakers on there, but for now that can't be helped. Any useful feedback would be appreciated, thanks.
  8. They will charge you for the new one if they don't receive the old one back within 30 days.
  9. Ya do check the reviews for the Nirvana box, they're pretty bad. http://www.amazon.com/Nevermind-4-LP-Deluxe-Edition/dp/B005CK76ZA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1353263054&sr=8-3&keywords=nirvana+nevermind+20th+anniversary+super+deluxe+edition The other individual pressing on the other hand is from RTI and sounds amazing.
  10. The shipping situation for you may complicate things quite a bit, but it might be possible to work it to your benefit. I've done this a couple of times before. They usually say that they have to receive the original defective product back within 30 days of when the return is initiated. If the shipping happens fast enough hopefully you will get the replacement in your hands before you have to send the first one back. In that case you can hand pick the best from both boxes and if you're lucky assemble a perfect set. Then put the crap ones back in the original box and send it back. If it works, you have in effect been sent replacements for just the bad ones. Thanks Amazon.
  11. Amazon just released their calendar for this years lightening deals in music. It is of course mainly cd's but there are a few (literally) vinyl deals that may be of interest to some people. If you haven't done these lightning deals before, they are time sensitive and limited in quantity. Just check the calendar for something you want and be there to click buy the minute it's available. http://www.amazon.co...&tag=slickdeals The vinyl I could find (and maybe there's more, I didn't click through every link) was this: Nirvana Nevermind Deluxe Remaster (yes the shitty one) - $37.99 Iron Maiden En Vivo - $17.49 Paul McCartney Kisses on the Bottom - $15.49
  12. It's a shame they're not making a double at 45rpm, that would be something really special. This is basically what we already have available but with an extras disc that most people will never listen to.
  13. After one email cc'd to all three addresses I got a reply that they would replace my defective (noisy) limited ed. vinyl. I got a tracking # a day or so later and it eventually arrived via usps. The new one, while not exactly audiophile spec, sounds quite good. I'm really happy that my situation got resolved relatively painlessly. The packaging for the limited edition is seriously one of the better things I'm seen, so happy to now have it be functional. Just wanted to relate that they did pull through for me.
  14. The limited blue copy I received doesn't seem to have the side b defect, but it does sound terrible. If I contact them do you think they will send me a black replacement?
  15. $60 for Charlotte Gainsbourg 5:55, had it shipped from Germany
  16. My order status just changed to shipped!!! Jk, I am of course anxiously awaiting my cancellation email.
  17. importcds.com Keep an eye out for sales and for imports that are otherwise really hard to come by. The shipping is kinda pricey and slow but often ends up being way cheaper overall than other places. I've gotten some pretty great deals on Radiohead and Morrissey stuff there.
  18. I hate always having to gripe about something that some band/label should have done about particular releases but I 100% agree with you here. Agreed! I can't help but feel that they either couldn't be bothered to get full resolution scans of the original artwork, or weren't allowed to somehow. What it appears we got are images from CD covers... and a whole lot of brown-ness surrounding them (though the foil letters are kinda nice).
  19. a little better: http://www.ateaseweb.com/2011/04/27/radioheads-king-of-limbs-newspaper-album-has-arrived/ http://www.creativereview.co.uk/cr-blog/2011/april/king-of-limbs-radiohead
  20. These pictures are kind of frustrating. It's hard to tell what's what, like what is the enclosure/box exactly?
  21. Looking for the Villagers/Charlotte Gainsbourg split 7''. Please pm me!
