that 'first ever playable etched record' thing is bull i have a love as laughter 7" (the split with ringfinger) from the mid-90's that also has playable etchings... on both sides! it's a little bit tough to see in the pic, but it's atari logos on this side, stars on the other.

What are some cool/unique records?
thieves replied to RustyShackelford's topic in Vinyl Collective Message Board
i randomly found a first pressing of the 7" with 100 locked grooves (the record that started that whole series) for a couple bucks at a used book store a couple years ago -

next time you want to release that 12+ minute 7"

an etched side would significantly increase the price of pressing because of the additional plating involved. a truly blank side should cost significantly less because plants usually have blank stampers on hand. a bit of advice on one sided 12"s though... PUT LABELS ON BOTH SIDES. if the one-sided 12" has any problems, they involve the record warping in the shape of a frisbee. labels on both sides help that significantly. -

the savings i was talking about were with lacquers and stampers. i never count packaging because people pay what they want on that stuff. some folks put out phenomenal records in blank sleeves, other put out shit in a gatefold with two inserts. -

it's just that i've done the numbers, and a one-sided 12" is just plain cheaper and better in most situations -

there's a lot of complaining i could do on here that i don't because i don't want to call out any clients (several post here) but the whole cramming tons of music onto a 7" thing is one of my biggest pet peeves. -
consider doing a one-sided 12" a long (anything over 10 minutes, really) 7" is prone to: -surface noise -skating -increased susceptibility to wow/more pronounced warble when and if the record warps you could be doing a one-sided 12", which at 45, could easily hold 12+ minutes, and could hold almost twice that at 33. you'd only have to pay half the normal cutting/plating costs. the per record pressing price will be higher, but the amount saved on lacquers and stampers should offset that for any run 500 or less. for runs over that many, you just have the increased fidelity of a 12", but i'd say it's well worth it.

yeah we tried forever for that brown/white swirl to work but any more white and it just turned into a khaki beige sort of mess. we also made the poop/jizz jokes, but then also made 'santorum' jokes about that /50 -
i put cdr's in all of them because who on earth has a record player?!?!?!
-
i know i posted about this in the last thread about that invitation, but we recorded a 7" together... we danced to the A (a magnetic fields cover) and drunkenly performed the B (an original) on the wedding band's equipment at the end of the night:

i think he has a nice little system of breaking even and getting rid of all the copies so more power to him -
yeah, his prices are always real reasonable, even collectible stuff i miss hodad's

i love living in a city that's not a huge market, the records here are so much cheaper than what i see whenever i go to chicago or new york

it's not getting repressed by bark & hiss, keith told me that he's 'done with that record'. there are 500 copies floating around between the first and second pressings, it shouldn't be hard to track down for a decent price. mie music has gathered tones, united colors, and the endless pool ep. if you're missing any of those, that's the only non-ebay/discogs/gemm/etc place to get any of those titles. i'd jump on any that you don't have, as they never re-press because they do an album at least once a year and pay for it themselves.
