Anchoring aside, I think you're good. I don't think removing the top dividers from the two vertical units will compromise their integrity by much, if at all, given the weight of each shelf rests on the singular vertical dividers. I have a 2x4 expedit on its side and tend to worry about so much weight resting on those tiny wooden pegs. The top 1x5 should be cool too, the slabs of particle board that surround expedits seem really beefy to me so I highly doubt it will sag/droop at all. The only real concern is that it's a shit ton of weight to anchor so far up. I'm not sure what kind of wall you're attaching this to. The only other option I can think of (granted I'm not sure what you plan on using the two vertical 2x4's for), is buying the swinging door accessories they offer for expedits and figuring out a way of locking them and skipping that 1x5 altogether. I'm not an expert in anything remotely close to this kind of thing though so, you know, grain of salt. take pics when you get it up and running, I freaking love the pics in this thread. edit: also, how good at climbing are your kids? because if they climb, a full expedit could severely injure, if not kill a toddler easily.
