a vinyl pilgrimage to Japan / Seoul...?

Recommended Posts

I am sure this isn't for everyone..  but in April I went to Japan for vacation and couldn't believe

how amazing the record shopping was there.

I came home with so many amazing records I just never ever see in the states (original pressings of Beck, Sublime, Bjork, a gang of four test pressing, Mineral - Power of Failing, the Anniversary, Jawbreaker, etc...)

Anyway, I traveled with a good friend of mine who wasn't a record collector so I spent some of my time shopping but the other bit of time I spent doing tourist-y shit..but truth be told I couldn't help what it might be like

to do this trip with fellow record nerds..

so.  I was thinking about going back NEXT october (not this one..) this way people can save up and all..

I thought of some cool ideas about sharing want lists and doing a lot of research in the meantime.

anyway, I know some of you might not be interested or can't afford but thought it might be a fun idea to talk about ..

is anyone interested?

Im already planning on going. I just recently have gotten serious about it and im currently trying to get an additional job to save funds for the trip. I want to save enough money for ticket and records obviously, but I also want some extra cash for other things as well. One thing that has deterred me a tiny bit is sleeping arrangements. I wish I could meet someone in japan that would let me stay with them for a tiny bit. I could return the favor in the states. But yes I am certainly interested.

Each year, a record shop map is released in Japan. It is like a mini-phone book. Mine is 464 pages. But its in Japanese only.

when we went.  we did airbnb's and stuff and split amongst two people it wasn't too terrible.

I bet if we had a few people to go..  we could really bring down costs.

We follow one another on instagram. Or at least, your instagram that is dedicated to your record finds. I saw everything you got while there & couldn't believe the scores!

I'm defiantly up for this venture.

It's always been on my bucket list to record shop in Japan!

I've wondered this, I love the Japanese culture, but have you thepunkguy or anyone else felt worried about the radiation over there? Am I stupid to worry about ordering LP's from Japan online? This is something that has been bothering me.

when I was over there..  they pretty much assured me that tokyo was unaffected by it..  it's pretty far away from the radiation..

and they had done a ton of tests..

to me the pricing felt like this.

it was either priced accordingly for records that I never ever see.

then there were records for like 3/4's the normal pricing

and then just flat out deals..  like old punk records for like 3 dollars and shit.

I think Modest Mouse was like 160.00

which is definitely less than discogs .

I mean there are some ridiculous things tho..

I saw a Led Zeppelin 1 test pressing, just sitting on the wall of a shop.

it was like 4800.00 dollars.

I took a picture of it.

that's so cool.

I have thought up some cool places to go..

but would love to get some suggestions of other places / cities

or how one puts together a "record vacation"

This would be amazing, there's a handful of LP's that seem to be plentiful over there I want, a few would be:

Supergrass - I Should Coco

Stereolab - Dot's and Loops & Emperor Tomato Ketchup in colored vinyl

The Bees - Free the Bees

Bjork Post on pink(you got it)

Some from Thee Michelle Gun Elephant

I could go on...

I'm going to Tokyo in November. Any particular record stores to check out or just cool stuff in general?

a lot.

I mean in tokyo you have to look up all the Disk Union shops.  they're the best.  but they're going to be a bit more overpriced but

they're going to have some amazing stuff.  and they have like floors dedicated to really specific genres ..

http://diskunion.net/st/shop/e_index.html

the one in Shibuya has a punk / metal floor that has literally categories called 90's emo and shit!  it's genius.

if you go to Osaka definitely go to Time Bomb

Hi, I was living there when all that went down. If there was an actual radiation threat, I'm pretty sure that the US would have evacuated the military bases they have stationed around the area. My best friend lives in Fukushima and has had 2 healthy daughters since the accident.
