dreamover
hey guys, i've been trying to time/price my second release and i was looking for some opinions from some of you label owners. i'm contemplating putting the record out as a single or a double. i had a guy say he could do a 35 minute 12" side. if i did a single, one side would be about 28 minutes. i have a few records that are over a half hour per side that sound great, but i guess at some point it comes down to the mastering plant. anyone here ever press a 12" with a 25-30 minute side? dreamover
and i know popular opinion would be to "just do a double". but i am just trying to see if i get one "yes" for single.
tripleb
the only LP I pressed had 20 minutes on one side. I think it depends on what plant you us.
hewie
The longer the side, the quieter, the noisier, and less bass-y the recording will be. I don't think many people/labels will recommend over 20-25 minutes. In a perfect world, all sides would be no longer than 15 minutes. dreamover
it seems like a lot of older 70's/80's LPs i have are way over 25 minutes per side. it's like they didn't even make double albums back then, other than, say, the white album.... records with 20+ songs. i know they kind of make them different now though. justindinealone
i usually just use this for reference.. taken from aardvark mastering: 45 Loud - 10 mins 45 Normal - 12 mins 45 OK - 14 mins 33 Loud - 13 mins 33 Normal - 15-1/2 mins 33 OK - 18-1/2 mins 33 Quiet - 23 mins 33 max I've done - 37 mins
dreamover
the differente between 23 minutes and 37 minutes is 14 minutes. thats a big gap!
danthemjfan23
you are wonderful at math.
xjustinxschwierx
i try to limit it to 17-20 minutes...but try for the former or less. I could technically do the Methadones NEV LP as one LP, but it'd be quiet...just bite the bullet and do the 2xLP edit: just do the second LP on black vinyl to help keep the costs down. dreamover
you are wonderful at math. the fact that i was able to figure out that 37-23 = 14 or because i realized that was a "big gap"?

forgeagain
I hate 2xLPs, but 28 minutes is way too long for a single side. 20-22, sure. 28? Nah bra.

Nah bra. i'm pretty damn sure it's gonna have to be a double, but if i had one person say they've made a side at 28 mins and it sounded good, i might think about talking to the people they worked with. but i'm going to try to at least get it down to three sides. (less flipping)
aarondanger
i always just say
forgeagain
Yeah, 20 is pretty much the standard, but if you have a record that's going to be like 19 minutes on one side and 21 minutes on the other, or thereabouts, a 2xLP is silly. salaho
The Fall's "Hex Enduction Hour" is 30 mins/side sounded OK, haven't listened to it for a long while though! If it's one really long track you're stuck with using 1 side, but would it be cheaper to do LP & 7" than a 2xLP?
danthemjfan23
interesting thought, there.... LP + 7" is always nice.
xjustinxschwierx
the LP+7" is the easy/cheap fix but it's a pain in the ass to do that flipping... for the 7", so I think the 7" songs would get played less...
dreamover
yeah, i only like 7"s with my LPs if they're bonus tracks.
cside
double 10" is better than an LP and a 7"
xjustinxschwierx
double 10" is better than an LP and a 7" also even more expensive than a double 12"
forgeagain
I like short albums so I think single LP is the best possible format. Bands should make more of an effort to keep their albums that short. If they record more songs than would fit on an album, they can get their EP or split or whatever on and then collect all that shit on another single LP later if anybody actually wants it. Only in a perfect world.
