Why can't I get into Jawbreaker?

Recommended Posts

Jawbreaker is a band that is not for everyone. I can understand not getting into them.

As for all this Brokencyde hate though, you guys are way off. Band rules.

i cant get into them either. i tried. pass.

Everybody raves about how awesome Blake Schamsnhjklenbleck's lyrics are. I just keep thinking "Mine would be just as good if I were a lobotomized pre-teen girl that just got obsessed with Sylvia Plath." Sorry, Nicole.

I'm reading 24 Hour Revenge Therapy's lyrics as I'm listening to them and I'm through Ashtray Monument and nothing's really hit me as great yet.

Here's what you do:

Have your girlfriend break up with you, take a semester off of college, and spend 4 months wandering around Europe with a cassette walkman and a copy of 24 Hour Revenge Therapy stuck in said walkman. Listen to that tape for hours every day while walking around in the rain.

Worked for me.

Gahahaha. Last time I was here, he was at the This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb show, I shouted, "I'm not that impressed professor!" a few times to embarrass my friend who's in love with him. I listen, but I am in no way ultimate-super-obsessed fan. I guess it all depends on your mood when you're listening to them.

I forgive you cause I love you. And because that's also the best misspelling of Schwarzenbach that I've ever seen. :)

For the record I've never read Plath. From a personal standpoint all I can say is Jawbreaker came to me at the most perfect time. I have to say when you fall in love with your favorite band there's a series of events and conditions that go along with it. I can totally vibe and respect people who don't get it as long as they are ok with my obsession.

The connection I feel to Blake's words is very personal and hard to completely describe.

i seriously wouldn't expect everyone to like them. while i consider blake a damn good lyricist for that time, sometimes you had to be a fan of the times. Sometimes you just don't like the music. And that's ok. I don't like Thursday or any of those bands. Doesn't mean they are overrated or underrated. Sometimes there are also circumstances (like nicole said) that make you react and understand their music due to personal events. This goes for all bands. Not just this one.

I personally love the lyrics for "CHESTERFIELD KING". mainly because some of the events that transpire are similar with some of my own.

We stood in your room and laughed out loud.

Suddenly the laughter died

and we were caught in an eye to eye.

We sat on the floor and did we sit close.

I could smell your thoughts and thought.

Do you want to touch a lot like me?

Too scared to say a thing.

I left your house and kicked myself.

I put those feelings on a shelf to die.

I guess I'm not a gambling type

but think of what the two of us had lost.

I needed some time to think it out.

7-Eleven parking lot.

A toothless woman turned and stopped.

I gave her a dime and a Chesterfield.

She leaned down and kissed my cheek.

I was scared but it felt sweet.

Felt so sweet.

She asked me if I had a name.

I told her I was glued up on some chick.

We sat and smoked against the wall.

Drank a beer, felt the chill of fall.

I took my car and drove it down the hill by your house.

I drove so fast.

The wind it couldn't cool me down,

so I turned it around and came back up.

You were waiting on your step,

steam showing off your breath and

water in your eyes.

We pulled each other into one,

parkas clinging on the lawn and kissed right there.

Said all my chicks they smoke these things and handed you a

Chesterfield King.

Held your hand and watched TV

and traced the little lines along your palm.

THere's nothing wrong with not liking them. But why ponder on it? If you don't like them, then move on.. just like any other band.

Chesterfield King is my favorite Jawbreaker song.

mine too. and then there's JET BLACK

especially these lyrics:

White noise in black room dust.

These hands long for one last touch.

Hourglass all out of trust.

I don't scratch so I won't itch.

I don't reach so I won't miss.
