Ideas/Tips/Things to do in Chicago

I'm headed to Chicago in just over a week. Pretty excited about it since I haven't gotten to use my vacation time this year. My southern California self is prepared to be cold given the huge temperature drop I'm about to experience.

I'll be out there Dec 16 - 21 and staying here http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/chidt-chicago-marriott-downtown-magnificent-mile/

What I'm looking for are things to do, places to see, restaurants, shows going on around that time, and/or if anyone wants to hang. Doesn't really need to be of the "tourist" variety but whatever your thoughts would be helpful. I've never been so anything is appreciated.

ha, ok!

1. Find a currency exchange downtown and buy a 7 day CTA pass...which will be like $24 or so, this will get you unlimited rides, and will be invaluable as far as wandering in the city.

Reckless Downtown on Madison just east of State St. for starters.

What else do you want to do besides record stores as there will be about 5 others you'll need to visit.

I'm honestly down for most things (most vague as I can be I know). I'll be there with my girlfriend and it dawned on us we don't have any plans yet. I'm sure you're an endless sort of information. just doesnt have to be limited to shows/record stores. places to go/see/do and eatery is of importance right now.

Also, if you happen to stick around for New Years, head on down to Elgin for Ian's Party. It's a three day musical festival held in local bar venues. Tons of awesome bands (most of them local), and it's about an hour ride on the Metra from Union Station downtown (drops you off across the street from the venues and it's $5 round trip on weekends).

so far i'm going to rise against/noise by numbers at the metro

maybe teen idols/methadones at the bottom lounge but thats all i've seen for those dates im there.

ready to hang if you're free. trekking to to memphis is some serious business.

FYI the Teen Idols have cancelled that show, Phillip is in the hospital with 3 broken ribs and a collapsed lung...he stopped 4 guys harassing some girl in Memphis and got royally fucked up.

...also...it's worth it to get to see frogetters play! ha!

Just eat a ton of pizza, D'Agostino's and Lou Malnati's, and definitely go to Kuma's Corner.

Touristy things I have done:

The Art Institute is absolutely incredible if you are into that thing.

Don't waste your time at the Observatory.

The Field Museum had a really cool pirate exhibit when I was there and you can also see Sue the rad dino.

Aquarium is awesome.

Never made it to The Museum of Science and Industry, but have heard nothing but good things.

I love how everyone hypes up Kumas. It's definitely touristy now. Pass.
definitely touristy-but the food is still good, so that cancels out the hyping of it.

they make a good thing, lots of people took notice, the quality didn't diminish after they got popular... so they've continued to get more popular.

Think of it like a band. Do you give up on every band you like after their first record if the continue to write good songs and make good albums, even though you can't go see them in a small venue anymore? Sure, you can lament on days gone by where you were able to walk up and get a table / go see them play a basement show, etc..., but the reality is you can't anymore.

yesssssss

or jewel or domincks one of them carry the passes

there's no grocery stores in that area that I can think of...though there is a Whole Foods at like Superior and Wabash...that's not too far away, I think they sell CTA passes there...
