drabley
On the matter of substance abuse (specifically alcohol,) Charles Bukowski put it best: "Drinking is an emotional thing. It joggles you out of everyday life, out of everything being the same. It yanks you out of your body and your mind and throws you against the wall. I have the feeling that drinking is a form of suicide where you're allowed to return to life and begin all over the next day. It's like killing yourself, and then you're reborn. I guess I've lived about ten or fifteen thousand lives now." I found this little slide show of some famous literary personalities that were slaves to (or masters of?) some substance or another. Pretty interesting stuff. http://www.life.com/image/50334065/in-gallery/38742/famous-literary-drunks--addicts

darknesscomesalive
I also love how, at that link, as you click through it lists "name/specific substance addicted to" until you get to Hunter Thompson and it just says "everything" under the addictions. Made me laugh out loud a little.
