mcm1610
So, I never was into comic books growing up - I had like 10, and probably 7 of them were Simpsons comics. I always loved the darker Batman movies though - the 1989 Batman and Batman Returns, then obviously the new start with Nolan. I popped in Dark Knight the other day and wound up reading online a lot about the trivia and such, and "The Killing Joke" came up often as one of the go-to resources for Ledger's Joker, so I bought it and "Arkham Asylum". Read them both - can't say I loved AA, but The Killing Joke was pretty sweet. Where should I go from here? More internet nerding has pointed me towards Miller's Year One and The Dark Knight Returns as well as Loeb's "The Long Halloween" and maybe "The Dark Victory". I don't think I care enough to get roped into the whole series, and I definitely like the darker side of Batman (and the Joker). So... does anyone here have suggestions? dynamitekid
Long Halloween then Dark Victory. Black and White year one The Dark Knight returns Those first two are the best
burdenx
Honestly, I'd buy the Miller stuff and if you're still interested, go to the Loeb stuff and maybe R.I.P. If you're expecting to find another Batman comic on the level of Killing Joke, forget it.
burdenx
Also, do not buy The Joker by Azzarello. It sucks.
batman
the long halloween and dark victory for sure. haunted knight is also good as well if you want more loeb + sale. war on crime--batman story drawn by alex ross = amazing. definitely year one and dark knight returns (also the dark knight strikes again, but its not as good). also, all star batman & robin is a fun read if you're a frank miller fan, plus jim lee's art is awesome. hush is a good arc arkham asylum is a great darker story, really the only grant morrison i like (the RIP/recent stuff is shit imo) black & white is hit or miss. some are really good, but some are pretty meh. if you want more classics, the knightfall arc is good, a death in family (death of jason todd), a lonely place of dying, etc.

roadmonkey
If you want a holy fucking shit WTF moment in all of comic book history, read A Death in the Family Joker is just fucking B-R-U-T-A-L in that one. Also the way the ending was made was pretty sweet, however do NOT research it before reading. Major Spoiler if you do.
robotnerd
yeah, long halloween. i really liked "the cult", also really liked "secrets." "hush" & "heart of hush" are both good too. honestly, even though it's not actually batman, if you're looking for the best bat story to come out in decades, get batwoman: elegy. jayeffscene
A Death In The Family is definitely worth getting. My favorite Batman story of all time is 'Dark Victory,' but it's better if you've read 'The Long Halloween,' so both of those are backed hard. mcm1610
I think I've been spoiled on "A Death in the Family" but I'll still look into that one.
jurrobear
really the only grant morrison i like (the RIP/recent stuff is shit imo) HOW DARE YOU!! If you like Long Halloween I'd go right into Dark Victory. I'd also go with Hush,Heart of Hush, Batman:Year 100, Batman and The Black Glove and Batman & Robin Vol. 1 & 2. mcm1610
Someone give me the top two to get. I'm going to be spending at least three hours in airports sitting idly so I'm gonna run to B&N tomorrow. Right now I'm looking at either The Long Halloween + Dark Victory or Year One + Dark Knight Returns. TOP TWO: What should I do tomorrow. batman
either of those sets would be ace, but i'd go with year one + DKR. year one was what got me into batman comics--can't go wrong there.

silentgods
i think long halloween and dark victory work better as a one-two punch. thats how i read them and they both hit so much harder for me.
Fartcat
For more recent stuff, the two books Keving Smith has done, Cacophony and Widening Gyre are really good.
