allenh
This. What does the performance pack add to the RP1? Better tonearm? TBH next to cock all from what I can gather. But that aside there are an enormous amount of upgrades for the basic Rega table. You can if the mood and the depth of your wallet allows replace everything until you are left with the power switch and the main bearing locking nut from the original, and if you really feel the need you can replace those just for the fun of it. That's a large price increase for nothing. I've read the Rega are pretty upgradable. Maybe I should go with an RP1 over a Debut Carbon- or save more for the VPI Scout Jr., since it is reallu upgradable too.
allenh
There is nothing more upgradeable than a Rega. There is nothing you can't replace and for most things there will be more than one option of upgrade part from different people, arms, modified Rega arms, modified arm parts, platters, sub platters, plinths, main bearing bearings, main bearing shafts, main bearing sleeves, motors, pulleys, belts, speed control electronics, etc. etc. etc. The list is almost endless. I can't think of another turntable where there are that many off the shelf upgrade parts and that many companies offering those parts, the list is truly staggering. And if I had to choose between the Project and the Rega I'd go Rega every time but given free reign I wouldn't buy any non suspended sub chassis turntable. Interesting, might go with a RP1 instead of a Debut Carbon then. I like the option to upgrade components, rather than buying an entirely new table down the line. kannibal
Only thing is, if you are going to upgrade, at least start with a better foundation. Like the Carbon, the RP1 is not worth upgrading IMHO. For Rega, start with at least an RP3 if you are going to invest in upgrades.

And you will probably have spent as much as you would have with a Scout Jr. with just a few minor upgrades. If I were you and could swing the money for the Scout Jr., I would not bother with trying to upgrade a RP1.

I've been eyeing the Scout Jr.'s, and really like the look and reviews on it. There is also a dealer here in town, so I can actually listen to it before buying. If you are not in a rush you can always be on the lookout for a B stock Scout, sometimes these can be found on musicdirect.com or soundstagedirect.com. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll certainly keep an eye on them, even if it's just to save a few bunch I can toss toward the blue stylus. allenh
The point with all Rega tables is they are fundamentally the same design so any one of them can be taken to extremes as far as upgrades go, I agree an RP1 isn't good value for money new so if I were doing it I'd be looking at a 2nd hand RP3 becasue you do get a better basis to start from but turning an RP1 into and RP3 is just a matter of parts swapping as it is with any Rega table. Obviously price has a huge bearing and they are so common over here I don't understand why anyone would bother with any of the lower Projects over here and they don't tend to hold their value as well as the Rega's here but then with the wealth of world beating tables that have been and are made here the choice is staggering 2nd hand so pretty much a new anything is pointless on a cost for cost basis. On a slightly different note I'm surprised I don't hear any love for Sota tables that side of the water, I think if I was in the US and looking at domestic product that's where my money would go. Crabwalker
the rp1 is an awesome table for entry into hifi. You can find them used for a decent price. The best part is that it's plug and play pretty much. That said, I agree. If you are going to make this a table for a long time or want to upgrade, you'd be better off going further up the rega line. As far as amps/pres. I went with a crown power amp. It was like $200 and is a great, great value. I spent more on the pre and got a vintage audio research pre. I still use that today. I've never heard of Sota, but I'll look into them. I'm going to wait 2-3 months before the purchase, so should give me a ton of time for research. Sorry to go slightly off topic in here, and thanks for the help everyone.
allenh
I'm not sure how competitive the Sota line is compared to say VPI money wise but products like the Sota Sapphire have been a consistently good product for many many years in all it's variations so I would expect the same level of quality further down the range. weinerdog
I just got an email about my RP1 - in the process of packing they noticed that the cartridge suspension failing, so they're going to put on a new Ortofon 2M Red and recommend that over a Rega replacement. Is that a good deal/bit of luck for me?

The 2M red would be way better. weinerdog

For $399 I'm psyched to finally be spinning records after many years. Now I just need to find an affordable receiver/speakers/pre-amp. Another week or so before I get it: Let me know how you get on with that, I've been thinking about a Mono cart for a while but never quite pull the trigger, I should I have enough 60's Mono originals of things but I just never do and also think I'd want to run 3 turntables at once as well if I get one. Guest
My Music Hall amp showed up today. In my excitiment of hooking it up too fast, almost blew my speakers by plugging in an input into the pre-out. It would not let me adjust the volume. Luckily I caught it right away, after blasting my ear drums. It sounds a hell of a lot better than my Yamaha did.
