  1. please elaborate on this. btw, i will be at the LA show.
  2. this. that must be one arduous dusting job though.
  3. exactly this. i grew up in the ventura area and moved to OC for college, deciding to stay down here because the kind of housing i wanted (within a mile of the shore) was cheaper (i have a 1000 sq ft place that we paid $558K for). my husband moved here from SLC and lived in the south bay first. i love it there but a decent bungalow-sized home would've cost me more. additionally, i love driving in to LA a few times a month but i prefer the overall everyday pace of life in OC better. when my husband went to law school, he moved from the south bay to koreatown (because that area used to be cheap and it was closer to his school). k-town has become gentrified a bit more in the past decade, but back then we used to hear gun shots in the middle of the night. not sure if that's still the case. it was terrifying but i did find things to enjoy about hanging out there every weekend. not sure i could've stayed past the 3 years he went to school though.
  4. i'm 36, have owned a home in a beach town in orange county for a little over a decade so i don't have any pertinent advice regarding rent, roommates or jobs (i'm a stay at home mom), but we definitely burn through >$4k in less than a month. if it were just me, that might last 2 months...
  5. i will say the food for that, in general, isn't great so it is curious but doesn't matter in the end. the drinks either, they sucked. it's more of spectacle. service is good. entertainment is great. that's where your money goes.
  6. i spring breaked with my future husband and then honeymooned with him there. we did do the luau but i eat meat and appreciated the hula/fire dancers. (c. 2003-2004), didn't care for the drinks, too much sugar so they made me barfy, outside of that, got laid a lot, ate cheeseburger in paradise (chili cheese fries) and smokehouse bbq (pork ribs + 2 scoops rice, beans, hawaiian style) so from the thread, i gather the meat factor doesn't apply to you. get some macadamia pancakes by the banyan tree in lahaina (forget exactly where that is but it's right by the old courthouse) also went to maui aquarium (not a bad excursion), snorkeled (saw a puffer fish, but my snorkeling skills aren't great so i got more out of going to the less populated beach on the big island 10 yrs later and swimming with a turtle in the sea there, it was legit spiritual, i recommend it if you can actually swim with one, no lie). also spent a night in backcountry paia, but the lodging was eco-friendly (read: does not spray for tropical bugs so the roaches at night kept me up, but the local creperie was nice). saw a sugar cane mill there. went on the road to hana, and spent a night in kihei, by the airport because we, too, flew in late (where my future hubs tried to talk me into doing it on the deserted beach at night and i wish i had given into because it's not the same here in CA, lol). DO IT. to make this somewhat VC relevant, i bought J.E.W.'s futures on CD at the borders there on my honeymoon (because there was no record shops i knew of in 2004) the day it came out. oooh, additionally, we took a boat out to lanai on our honeymoon. shuttled from the big resort to a beach and since it was october, we were the only ones there. such a great memory. not sure if you can do that anymore, but i'd look into it.
  7. coincidentally, i just watched a Dustin Kensrue radio interview and performance last night and he was talking about John K Samson of the Weakerthans and what a great lyricist the guy is.
  8. haha! yup. and I can't multiquote while mobile but you're very likely right, kgry. i remember saad being pretty damn good vs. the Kings in previous playoff rounds so I was surprised at that move but he's not integral to the team. I do wonder if ladies in Hawks land shed a tear over losing sharp like I did over Williams though. probably similar scenario there. Williams is probably nearing the tail end of his career but damn, he's such a gamer in the playoffs and a babe to boot. I'm interested to see if he can add a spark to the caps via turning it on in the playoffs and/or veteran leadership.
  9. dallas just got babelicious. in all seriousness, wonder if saad and sharp missing will affect the hawks much.
  10. i was mildly excited when the kings got lucic. ever since last friday though, i feel kind of deflated and not really as excited about the season starting as i have in the past, even before they won the two cups (when they sucked). i'm still a fan and always will be. it's just that i'm not really expecting much from this year. i think the mike richards thing is gonna hang over the team for a bit. who knows what happens with slava still. i didn't really think they were absolutely gonna re-sign williams, but i still held out a little hope that they might. he was my most favorite player over the last 7 years, a time when the kings improved the most, so i was really hoping it would work out. i hope i'm wrong though and that the kings have a better year this year than last.
  11. damnit, there goes my bracket. oh well. i hope the bolts can hang against whoever wins the west!
  12. now that you mention it, ya I have one going through the back on the lower right. it left an indentation in the front but didn't puncture all the way through. it doesn't really concern me though since I never would've noticed it if I didn't know to look for it.
  13. another great game, but i need the rangers to win. gah.
  14. i might've read that also, but i forget. even more reason to order a new copy, i guess. someone talk me into getting that longbox CD, too, lol.
  15. i have it. i also have the original press of the s/t LP. i went and ordered this re-press because of the album art and i wanted to get the longbox CD also but i feel like 3 copies of this are enough... since it seems the longbox has pretty much the same art as this new vinyl press, it's just in a longbox CD format. at this point, i'm only accumulating copies with different art.
  16. almost a whole extra game, even. i hope they (the west games) all go to multiple OT. that headbutt goal was a thing of beauty. too bad it didn't count. when they finally did score in the 3rd OT, i yelled out so abruptly, i scared my dog. haha. playoff hockey is so awesome.
  17. i don't think it's gross. everyone has their thing. personally, not my thing, but i do wanna hear about it!
  18. i've had center ice for at least the last 5 years. i watch a lot of hockey though. the kings are local to me, but i oftentimes like to watch habs and rangers games so that's when it pays off. does nhl network come without center ice? it's been so long, i forget. i watch a lot of that, too. the thing that made me subscribe in the first place though was that kings games in alberta and vancouver didn't used to get televised locally, so i'd have to go to a bar that carried CI. for the 3-6 times that i paid my bar and food bill/year, i figured i'd spend the money and be more relaxed watching at home with the sound on and then i just started watching other teams' games more.
  19. oh man, pardon the typo. just now realized it's ardbeg not ardberg. the tasting rep was a total ditz with a heavy valley/OC surfer accent that mispronounced the name so i always assumed it said ardberg. haha... i'll give it a try for sure. i'll give the 18 yr laphroaig a taste, too. sometimes, i prefer the younger bottles though. i definitely prefer 10 yr talisker to 18. 18 just gets too smoky and peppery for me. i like those notes to be more subtle. so i really enjoy the 10 yr.
  20. i think it's amazing that callahan came back to play after having an appendectomy a few days ago. best sport around.
  21. i've had caol ila and bruichladdich. can't remember the ages of the bottles or if i liked the latter but i know i liked the former. out of the islay malts, i like lagavulin the best. yes, just like ron swanson... i had the chance to try ardberg once at my local bottle shop but the tasting rep rubbed me the wrong way so i just declined. i've heard decent things about that one though. might buy a bottle some time and give it a try.
