mazer78
I recently picked up a very cool mid century cabinet, but it has been retrofitted with a Crosley Cruiser taken out of its suitcase and mounted inside. I know these are known for damaging records, so I am looking to replace it with something that is safe to play vinyl on. Any suggestions? I can take something apart like the cruiser has been. It will need to mount flat inside the cabinet, and be no deeper than 12". The width doesn't much matter. I am trying to keep it under $300 if possible. Thanks in advance! -Michael
hipsterasfolk
I would go with a Pro-Ject, you can find a Debut III new for ~325 or ~250 used most likely.
Guest
I think an old Dual, or Thorens might work well for this. Might be hard to find a decent one in your price range though.
NapalmBrain
I'd agree with the Dual, small and sound great and reliable but they are not cheap
mazer78
Thanks a lot guys, but the Debut III and all of the Duals that i can find on Ebay are too big. Any experience with the Pro-ject Elemental?
Dominic_
I can measure my debut carbon if it'd be any help
allenh
Any Chassis table so good ones are Goldring Lenco GL69, 72, 75, 78 etc etc. or if you're very flush Thorens TD125 or one of the chassis mount Micro Seiki's or even a Pioneer PL12D also the Dual 505's like a lot of the above can be removed from their plinth and mounted into another chassis whether that's how they come or not. I'm currently doing the opposite where I'm building a suitcase table using a Goldring Lenco GL72 to prove you can do it and it doesn't need to be a crosley Not so good but still reasonable usable ones are pretty much all the later BSR's and most of the Garrards except the 301/401 which fall into the very good and expensive category
mazer78
The Dual 505 may work, but the big problem is that almost anything with a full size platter won't fit, as the platter itself takes up almost all of the room I have. slinch
I might be misunderstanding what you're trying to do, but I'm pretty sure that if a 12" platter won't fit, then 12" records won't fit either.
mazer78
The 12" platter will fit, but if I get anything that has a base (of the player itself, not whatever "chassis" it is in) more than 1/2" deeper than the diameter of the platter, I won't be able to shut to cabinet door when I am not using it. mazer78
I would post a picture of what I am dealing with, but can't seem to figure out how to do so.
ajxd
This seems like you're choosing looks over function. Why not just modify the cabinet?
Freki
Ha. Probably easier to just install a platter directly to the shelf.
ajxd
Actually I figured it out. Take it to the dump. Problem solved.
mazer78
In this particular circumstance, yes, I am choosing looks over function. I have a nice turntable in my living room, and bought this cabinet for my family room, as it will fit in perfect with the rest of my mid-century modern furniture. It seems a waste to not get a turntable for it, but I want modify it as little as possible, as it is mostly going to be used just as furniture and not much of an actual record player. Even though I won't use it much, I want the option of doing so without damaging my records. Make sense?
ajxd
Right. But modifying the part where the table sits doesn't seem like it's going to do much damage to the visual aspect. Post pictures? Maybe it can help. I've modified a handful of these for a handful of tables and amps.
ajxd
Also you're new. Tell us about your nice table and setup too. We care. There's a thread for it pinned to the top of the forum.

mazer78
It's nothing fancy or high end. Just an old Panasonic hooked up to a Sony reciever. I'll look into posting the picture when I'm home later. Thanks.
thebilljim
I tried to post pics, but just can't seem to figure out how to do so. I just created a private "me only" Facebook album to host pics for this forum. Right click, "copy image url," go.
allenh
Give us the internal dimensions you are trying to fit this in. A lot of the tables I gave as examples are just over the size of the platter front to back but all will be wider than the platter to accommodate the arm
mazer78
This is what I am dealing with. The depth from the back of the shelf to the door is 12 3/4", but the door is angled back a bit, so I only have a depth of 12 1/2" to work with. As you can see, the width really isn't an issue. If I need to keep the door open while in use, that will not be a problem either. i have no issues modifying the shelf, but that is really all I can modify. I fell like I am being difficult here, and that is not my intention, as I do appreciate all of the advice. At this point, it seems like the Pro-ject Elemental (http://www.project-audio.com/main.php?prod=elemental&cat=turntables〈=en) is my only real option that will fit properly. mazer78
I found 2 turntables locally that I am considering, but would like opinions on which way to go. A Dual 1212 for $60 or a Elac Miracord 770H that looks basically brand new for $200? Both appear that they will fit. The Dual supposedly works great, but looks a bit more aged than the Elac Miracord. Thanks for the advise thus far guys!
vinyl addict
Just as a heads up, you would probably want to keep the door open anyway. Bad acoustics with it shut, plus half the fun is watching the record spin.
