Starting a new vinyl collection site

I've been lurking the forums for a while now and I've noticed a few people having some of same frustrations as myself with the already existing collection sites such as Dead Format, Record Nerd and Google Spreadsheets. And since I got laid off at work I've been having way too much spare time that I might just as well use on something productive. So I was thinking that with the input and help from you people I would be able to create a more suitable website to catalog our vinyl collections.

So would you be interested in trying a new site or do you think there's already enough of these online vinyl listing pages? And if you could maybe write what you like about the site you're using right now, and what you would like to see on this new site.

And name suggestions would also be appreciated as well :)

Analog Apartment is going to becoming out w/ a site. I'm really looking forward to it. I signed up for the beta, you can too:

http://analogapartment.com/collect/

The early screen shots look nice, but you can't see much.

I asked them about it and they said they're going to start simple and build w/ user feedback.

I love recordnerd, when it works. Deadformat is inept, Checkmyvinyl is great, but a bit clunky, and Google Docs need a standard.

Someone should make a base template for Google Docs that everyone shares.

When I was super anal about my collection, I used this application called Catraxx. It's essentially an Access database with every kind of category imaginable. It's almost overkill. Lots of good stuff though and possibly some suggestions for what you might want to add to your site. You can add pictures and weblinks in the database as well.

I like deadformat because it's easy and searchable. I don't really need anything else. Of course, would be cool to see the update everyone talks about, but in no hurry. I used checkmyvinyl.com a bunch, but being on dialup, the image part of it makes it super slow. So until I get into the now, I'll stick with deadformat :)

I use Check My Vinyl, I think the layout of the site is really nice, easy to use, and pretty straight forward. I like the site a lot.

checkmyvinyl was made to try to answer some of the problems people have with other sites as well so we are also always welcome to suggestions

so if you ever have any feel free to let us know and we will take them into consideration and we will try to address them

I would like to see a listing with some kind of page that lists the usual Name/Album/Format (7", LP, 2x7", other)/ Color/pressing info/ and a way to upload the cover if it hasn't already been uploaded. I also want to see a way of looking for random tradelists to see who has a certain item.. Much like Dead Format (which i love by the way for that reason alone).

i think any site where i have to enter each record into my list via some form, one piece of information at a time, is annoying. ie recordnerd i tried this site because the search function... i think i got to the H's on my 7" list and said suck it. its fine if you have 10 records and you just go from there. but when you have even a sort of substantial amount it just sucks. i love hows your edge because you just make a list and bam youre done. its searchable and its what you make of it.

inept. hmm.

I'll explain (I'm not dissing your work btw, I understand you're doing it for free and that your time is valuable).

"Inept" might not be the best word to use, but it works, http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/inept

I see no difference between this:

http://www.deadformat.net/tradelist/littlejonnyhormone

And this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notepad

It's kind of like, I'm looking for http://www.IMDB.com, but I'm given a Netflix account.

There needs to be a site where if I'm looking at someone's list and I see a record that I own I can click "add to my list" and BAM it copies all of the information to my list.

actually check my vinyl has this feature.

if you are looking at someones list and click on the individual record name there is the ability to "clone" that record... it will add it to your list after you have the chance to change any info you need to like if you have a different color or something

and if you are looking at the CMV database and you see a record you have you can just click a button to "Add this to my RecordList"

We built a little Flex-based app to help us to keep track of our collection / write notes about albums that we had. Our friends really liked the simplicity / design so we decided to make it available to everyone and build it out further.

In the past, I've steered clear of spreadsheets simply because they're ugly, cold, and reminded me of work...
