monk0nuggets
I have a feeling a wave of "Well that's what hip hop is" jokes coming on, but for real, every hip hop record I own has super thin jackets, no gatefold, and always thin black vinyl. What's up with that? Seriously though. The only exception I can think of is the last Kanye record. Even his first two records are low quality and even sound kind of shitty. thrillho
i blame this on DJ singles. Most DJs don't want a full album, they want the hit and they want variations of the hit. so when it comes to pressing the real album, they don't put a lot of effort into it, because most of the demand is coming from DJs who just want the single to mix and scratch. the local shop near me has TONS of used hip-hop almost ALL of it is promo and DJ single. in fact i picked up a copy of the "greatest hits" eminem album and they found all but 3 of the tracks on 12" single for $1 each. although, my copy of ice Cube's Death Certificate is 2xLP 180gram, and my 12" single of Gone Till November has a very HQ jacket. but i do agree on most hip-hop vinyl that the quality is lacking. zac
Yeah I've noticed this too. I still need to get the newest Kanye record.

chaps
808's is the best layout i have bought in a LONG ass time.
Duff
a guy that i bought a record from off ebay used 2 hip hop, rap, or whatever you want to call it records instead of a piece of cardboard as mailer inserts. he sandwiched the record i bought in between them. granted they were DJ promo singles but even so, it shows that he would rather give them away for free and use them as mailer inserts rather than sell them on ebay or in his brick & mortar store. flatlinemole
i totally agree. there are a few more exceptions than just 808's, but the medium is definitely shitty quality.
rtw88
My copy of Wu Tang Forever is pretty shitty. It's 4 LPs packed into a gatefold sleeve, and all of the vinyl is super thin.
tim
Rhymesayers has some nice vinyl with the last couple even being on coloured vinyl which is unusual for hip hop.

The newest Atmosphere record is on decent quality colored vinyl, but the packaging blows.
pibbals
Jay-Z's The Black Album was a gatefold. I think there were printed sleeves? I don't remember about the quality of the record though.
deadbeat52
most of my records are hip-hop singles, promos.. they are all decent quality but not as good as rock/punk records.. my 2 Pac - Me Against The World is super thin, though. I always thought that was odd.. most of the full length albums are gatefold with 4 records which sucks cuz everything seems stuffed in there.. theambulancereview
I've got "Straight Outta Compton" 20th anniversary edition on 2LP 180 gram, and its a badass gatefold. Got some others, mostly stuff from Ruthless Records and Deathrow. Most of the other stuff I've come across is flimsy and thin.
circlingvultures
i just got Aesop Rock's none shall pass double lp in the mail today and its nowhere near as cool as i would have hoped. Especially with Jeremy Fish doing the art. double lp, non gatefold, one sided insert, blank white sleeves. great record though, but could have been so much better package wise. teganandsara
Yeah hip hop packaging has been pretty lame but I found the quality of the vinyl has been good nothing to complain about for me.

shanehennessey
My copies of MM FOOD, Blackstar and Low End Theory are pretty good quality. My 36 chambers copy is a little sub par though. I need more hip hop albums in my life.
cosmonaut
My copy of Wu Tang Forever is pretty shitty. It's 4 LPs packed into a gatefold sleeve, and all of the vinyl is super thin. Then you should sell it to me! I bomb atomically...
monk0nuggets
I got a copy of MM..Food in the mail today, and the jacket is actually alright, but they shove both LPs into the pocket which is made for a single LP. That's just being cheap. It didn't even come with a lyrics sheet, which kind of irks me. This is a common occurrence.
burntwolf
My copy of Run DMC's Tougher than Leather was a bit underwhelming when I finally found one to pick up...

deafmx
Rhymesayers does crap work on their vinyl! so annoyed with the God Loves Ugly reissue and POS album. no inserts, 2 records in a cramped, thin jacket. I wish all 2xLP's could be gatefolds!
jurrobear
The Beastie Boys tend to always have amazing vinyl packaging, along with quality vinyl. -juliO!

AlexH.
The Beastie Boys' reissue of Check Your Head looks super nice: 180 gram 2LP with FLAC download + B-sides. I wish the Paul's Boutique reissue was a 2LP, I would've picked it up in a heartbeat.
