steventangent
So, I've been offered an Xbox360 for free, with the caveat that it's no longer under warranty and is likely to overheat and give me the red ring o' at any time. I've heard there are fixes online, and ways to prevent it. As my apartment is hot as shit and I've got a kitty whose hair is everywhere all the time oh my god holy shit, has anybody used any methods to either prevent or repair such a condition with any success? I hear tell from the natives that there is a method that involves tearing the whole thing apart and then doing a bunch of goddamn voodoo. I'm not the most terribly technical person in the world, but it's worth a shot...
forgeagain
If it's free, then who cares? They do make third-party fan-based cooling systems you can hook up to it.
rtw88
My girlfriend's brother got an over heating xbox for free and fixed it by himself, and he's really not savvy at all. I think all he did was take off one of the sides and prop it up on something so more air could escape. I'm sure it won't last forever, but it's working for him. flicker
1. take it its free. 2. it will probably red ring, there are temporary fixes, but they will only buy you one or two hours of playing time for only a couple times max 3. intercoolers cause more damage than good:

hardrockzombies
Mine was no longer under the warranty either when it got the RROD, but since Microsoft extended the warranty for the RROD only they still fixed it for free and I got it back in like a week. Worth a shot to take it and then send it back to get fixed if it does get the rings.
sonix
if you're worried about it over heating, just take the side off, and secure a screen on the exposed side. Thats what we did for a friends computer. Keeps it cool and keeps dust/hair out. and if its free why the hell not. If you dont want it, I'll take it for a spare. Snaggle Von Swift
if it's free, got nothing to lose definitely take it and get what use you can out of it maybe get one of the gamefly or whatever subscriptions and just rent games just in case it does soon die. that way you're not stuck with games you paid for. kirbypuckett
If it does have an issue, I believe you could still pay Microsoft to fix it for you. You can also trade it in to a Gamestop or something. As long as it boots up and plays fine they'll take it back. If something goes wrong afterward it's on them. kjg12590
one way i got mine to work for at least a little while is you turn it on, then wrap it in layers of towels....let cook for say thirty minutes then play, but thats just a temp. fix
amsteel
The best way to fix an XBOX360 is to buy a PS3

That fan is no more than a few volts so it won't be twice as bad.
sonix
the problem with the intercooler is short circuits and the vents wouldnt always line up properly. So it wouldn't always be blowing into the actual system, just at the case.
jakekinney
Mine red ring'd about 3 weeks ago and I preformed the X-clamp mod and its been running strong ever since. You can check out a tutorial here: http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/ring_of_light_x-clamp_fix.htm You don't have to buy their kit, I got my kit on amazon for 6 bucks, or just pick up the bolts and washers at a local hardware store and the thermal paste at an electronics store. It seems intimidating but I did it just following the directions with no problems, and I've never worked on electronics in my life.

Or would you recommend doing this first? I was told it's out of warranty, but I may just call and try to find out myself.
adamlikesmusic
Mine stopped reading discs. Microsoft wanted $130 for the repair. I left it on in a box for 8 straight days, it absolutely wouldn't red-ring. I bought a new Arcade instead of repairing. (The repair would've been warrantied for 3 months...) I'm also too computer-stupid to replace the drive myself.
steventangent
I'm intimidated by shit like this. Haha. I'm kind of okay at fixing guitars, and I've fixed my car and motorcycle with repair manuals. I don't see why this should be any different, other than computers run on voodoo and the gods don't like me.

brennan
er... this may be too much for some of you to believe but just because you own an xbox doesn't mean it will red ring. i've been going strong far a couple years with mine now. its like a 1/3 odd maybe (which is shit for a console but i'd take those odds in the lottery). advice: don't buy an inter cooler or any 3rd party cooling stand it up, more airflow otherwise i wouldn't be too worried. if its gonna red ring it will probably happen whether you try and prevent it or not. zac
There is a place here in town that fixes Red Ring for like $40-45. I'm sure there are places like it all over. Worst case scenario, you get it and it doesn't work and you pay to get it fixed but it's still way cheaper than buying one.
