Official Secret Santa 3.0 (2009)

Recommended Posts

Here it is. So please read through the whole list of instructions so you don't miss anything.

VC Secret Santa 2009 Rules

Your Moderators will be Mike (controlthebleeding) & Justin Communiqué.

1. Everyone interested in participating must PM Mike (controlthebleeding) their following:

• Name

• Address

• Avatar name and original name registered under(your login name when logging into the board, this issue came up on me last year because people switch names a lot and often, myself included started my account with a different name…and when trying to track somebody down it )

• (if you participated last year) the person you had last time, if you remember (to give you somebody new to buy for!).

• The link to your trade list. (if it's a google spreadsheet, please make shareable)

• Size of shirt just in case they have clothing in mind

• If you’re willing to ship overseas/US to Canada, etc…(this will probably drastically increase your monetary involvement, no skimping on the gift value if you spending most of the agreed amount on postage, only agree to do this is you can afford to do it.)

Send this info by the end of the day (wherever you are) Monday, November 2. This will be the cut off date unless we have an odd person and from there we’ll accept requests to take the missing spot.

2. Mike will divide the list in half divided between himself and Justin Communiqué and we we’ll PM everyone their person. Justin’s list will have Mike’s name, and vice versa so our names are randomly assigned to someone that we don't know.

3. Buy a gift for the person you get spending no less than $15 and no more than $25 (unless you really want to). These gifts can be vinyl, music related or just rad things you think they’ll like. It can be a few small things or one big thing, whatever. Don't send anything gross or crude (NO PORN, unless you know the person loves porn). If you don't know what your person likes, look up some of their posts and use what you've learned about them from this board as a guide. If you have questions ask around, or we'll ask for you. If you want to participate, you need to have a trade list; post the link in your signature so that your Secret Santa can get ideas of what to buy and what not to buy for you. There is no excuse not to have a trade list. Any person without a trade list will not be allowed to participate. No exceptions. So even if you don’t have time to catalog your entire record collection, create one (they’re free, another reason for no excuses) and name a bunch of your favorite bands, movies, whatever, just to give people a hand in looking for a gift for you. If you have a google spreadsheet, PLEASE MAKE IT SHAREABLE so your secret santa can view it. If you don't it's like you don't have one at all.

4. Pack up and send out your gift no later than November 20. Unless you specify that you’ll agree to send packages to other countries, we’ll try to keep people to mailing within their own country, as easy cheap delivery confirmations don’t work for the USPS’s international Mail…but there are more deluxe forms of tracking, but all of them raise the price considerably for international mail. Pick the type of shipping most appropriate or affordable(in the US please remember media mail can ONLY be used for audio recorded material, books, video recordings on whatever format, ie: this is media, breaking this rule could cause your box, should it be inspected to be deemed mail fraud and not delivered, and if you’re lucky returned to sender, but most likely will be thrown away!). This is assuming that all people outside the US will use their countries equivalent delivery confirmation tracking information.

• And this is very important: ALL PACKAGES ARE TO BE SENT WITH SOME SORT OF CONFIRMATION OR TRACKING.

Send the tracking information to your Secret Santa Moderator once your package has been sent, so we have a idea of who is sending what and when, also save your receipts just in case!!!! Everyone please us Justin’s address as the return address (since Mike's home address is only temporary for a few months if that). Please be sure to put "VC Secret Santa, ATT: Justin Schweir", 2441 West Gunnison St. #2, Chicago, IL 60625. Thanks

5. Include with the gift a piece of paper with three hints about who you are. It can be anything you want, your hometown, your favorite band, something anyone familiar with the board could figure out. Or, be vague…this is part of the fun!

6. When you receive your gift:

• post what you got in this the main thread and guess who sent it to you.

• PM your Secret Santa Moderator that you received your gift so we can mark you off our list.

This is a must: Once you've figured it out or it's been noted, please, please say THANK YOU. There's nothing more thoughtless than not at least giving a “thank you.” It's rude to say the least!

7. If you don't receive your gift by December 20th, PM your moderator AND post in the main thread(do not create a new thread) This means there has been a full month of allotted shipping time. We'll find a way to punish that person. If it arrives after that, we'll forgive them.

8. If you don't like what you got, feel free to swap with someone else, re-gift or sell the item.

9. On Jan. 1 (or shortly thereafter) we will reveal who everyone's Secret Santa was.

10. All new Boardies. Rather than completely disqualify you from participating, we need you to go through a few extra hoops in order to participate. All new board members(aka if you have less than 1000 posts*) who want to participate must be vouched for by someone we all know and has a good track record here (meaning good trades, or that you have sold too, etc etc.). It does not mean that you can get people that you bought from to vouch for you. Remember, if you're vouching for someone you're also in some form of trouble if this person flakes out. (maybe helping us pitch in to buy a gift if that person flakes) Capiche?

*= not including those who deleted their accounts and re-joined, were part of last years Secret Santa gift exchange, or are longtime members but don't post often (we know who you are).

**Note to any future Secret Santa’s from overseas. We must have a even # of Secret Santas across the pond or have people willing to send overseas. Please remember to note that in your initial email/PM so we put people together in this instance.

***We also ask, once this starts rolling to have everyone hide who their recipient is until after everyone has received their gifts and figured out their Secret Santa or till we announce the list... it makes it more confusing and fun

This list of rules is not set in stone, feel free to make more suggestions and we'll alter it accordingly. This can be really fun if everyone holds up their end of the bargain.

Also if people want to start PM’ing Mike their addresses we'll the information listed in point #1:

• Name

• Address

• Avatar name and original name registered under (your login name when logging into the board, this issue came up on me last year because people switch names a lot and often, myself included started my account with a different name…and when trying to track somebody down it)

• (if you participated last year) the person you had last time, if you remember (to give you somebody new to buy for!).

• The link to your trade list.

• Size of shirt just in case they have clothing in mind

• If you’re willing to ship overseas/US to Canada, etc…(this will probably drastically increase your monetary involvement, no skimping on the gift value if you spending most of the agreed amount on postage, only agree to do this is you can afford to do it.)

thanks,

mike and justin

I'm going to be using this post and editing it with names of those who contact me. Once a person's full info has been sent, your name will be posted. if you don't see you're name you probably didn't fill out the info correctly. So keep checking.

Thanks,

Mike

must mail the gift by 11/20, For real? thats super early. wasnt last year by 12/1 or so?

does a package really need 35 days to travel to its destination?

it's xmas. .i sent shit last year that took 3 weeks to arrive.. the earlier the better.. then we can figure out stuff early if someone flakes rather than in FEB like last year (oops, this year)

i figure a little more than 2 weeks to get all the names, then a few days to get everything sorted and then a few weeks for you guys to sort out your gifts to send.

no one started getting their gifts until around the end of november last year (that was like 2) and that was with a nov 26th deadline to send.. most got all their stuff in december, some in janauary and a few in february. We are gonna keep on this this year so no one gets screwed.

i hope this makes sense. basically we're doing it a week ahead of last year so people actually get their stuff in a reasonable time period.

Cool. When using my address as the return address, put my last name as an attn:

People that work at the post office are easily confused and I don't want to risk a package disappearing into usps limbo.

Thanks to mike for handling the initial craziness of this.

Yeah, we figured set shit earlier to help weed out the slow pokes earlier than last year.

For us folks in the U.S. who agree to ship overseas, do we have to plunk down for tracking too? I am willing to pay to ship something out of country, but tracking can double the cost most times. I agree that tracking/delivery confirmation is solid for domestic stuff, but overseas is extremely pricy.
