Cool Obscure Vinyl Finds

Recommended Posts

I'm new here, so please excuse me if I'm stepping ahead of myself by starting this thread (and if it already exists elsewhere, I apologize) but I love spending my time digging for cool/obscure vinyl. Sure I'll buy classics and new stuff on major (indy) labels, but I always get a thrill when I find some totally obscure, random vinyl that I'd never heard of, and it turns out to be pretty good.

My taste in this stuff tends towards early 70's hard rock, late 70's/early '80's metal, late 70's punk and 80's post-punk

Recently, I stumble upon these and was mildly impressed.

Little Bob Story - 4 song 7" EP - Chiswich - early 1976 hard pub rock/proto punk produced by Vic Maile.

Tempest - Let's Live for Today/Beaumont rag - Magna Carta - 2010 Celtic Rock

Gulliver - Ridin' the Wind - Columbia 1979 - weird 70's hard rock, sounds like REO Speedwagon meets Head East with some good guitar licks

Seanor & Koss - Reprise - 1972 - Surprisingly heavy, southern rock way early in the game.

Any cool finds on your part?

i have this really odd 'self-help' record pressed from the 50s. when you first put the record on, it tells you to flip the side and put it on track 2. it really tries to brainwash you..

found a beat up but very playable copy of Psycho Candy by The Jesus and Mary Chain in a .50 cent bin once. My tastes tend to lean towards the more bizarre end of late 70's and early 80's post punk and such, oftentimes I'll scour the cheapo bins with phone in hand and look up anything that looks odd compared to the usual mess one finds (Frampton and the like), I've come away with some really crazy stuff with this method as oftentimes that stuff is so unheard of that most record store folks are just throwing them in there because they don't know what to do with them as they haven't heard of them and don't know how to price accordingly.

Perfect! I do the exact same thing. All Music.com on the iPhone and random late 70's/early 80's album in hand (and early 70's hard rock/metal).

Yeah man, that's the way to do it. Another thing I do when searching through those bins is paying attention to particular labels. I was huge into the early Replacements for awhile and would pretty much blindly buy anything on Twin Tone records as a result and for the most part, I got a lot of great stuff. Found a sealed New Pornographers in one of those bins once as well - when I took it to the counter, the clerk made a crack that the owner was going senile and didn't even know what he was doing nowadays.
