USA Summer Festivals 2012

Recommended Posts

Never too early to start talking.

What are you going to, what have you been to in the past? Who has been announced?

Ones I've Been To:

Chicago - http://www.lollapalooza.com/ - Aug 3-5 (No Bands Announced)

Biggest turnoff is that it ends at 10PM. I just chose to go to after parties last year. Unless the lineup blows me away I'll just go to a couple after parties again this year. Usually very hot as well. No camping is also lame.

Tennessee - http://bonnaroo.com/ - June 7-10 (No Bands Announced)

Biggest turnoff is the price. Travel, tickets, and time missed at work really hurt. Lineup is always huge. Thursday shows are a plus. Late night shows are the most fun. Would like to go every year if it wasn't such a time commitment.

Middle Illinois - http://summercampfestival.com/lineup/ - May 24-27 (Moe., Umphrey's McGee, Pretty Lights, Primus)

Biggest turnoff is the repetitiveness off the lineup. If you don't like Umphrey's and Moe I wouldn't suggest going. I have gone the past two years and always had a real good time. Much smaller festival so you don't feel crowded. Planning on going to just Sunday this year.

Chicago - http://www.northcoastfestival.com/ - August 31-Sept 2 (No Bands Announced)

Biggest turnoff is not too many bands play. Pretty limited to electronic acts. Will be in Vegas this year over labor day weekend so I can't attend. Ends at 10PM and no camping like Lolla. Same location as pitchfork.

Milwaukee - http://www.summerfest.com/letsfest/ - June 27-July 8 (Neil Diamond, Lady Antebellum)

Biggest turnoff is the bleachers that take up all the space in front of the stages. This is different than most festivals. There is an amphitheater that has separate tickets from the rest of the fest. Amphitheater is ~$40 (rest of fest included with amp ticket) rest of the fest is ~$12. I'll usually go to one amphitheater show and one general festival show. Very diverse lineup. Ends around 11:30 PM. No camping.

Want To Go To This Year:

Michigan - http://electricforestfestival.com/ June 28 - July 1 (No Acts Announced)

Formerly Rothbury Festival. Supposedly they lost big the final year of rothbury, took a year off, and returned to the same place with a smaller electric forest festival. Last year it was basically a String Cheese Incident festival with a ton of electronic acts. Not sure what this year has in store. I'm saving my festival allowance for this one. Not too far, late night shows, around fourth of July.

That is a start.

My big turnoff is I'm not too into the announced lineup so far. Great sounding venue though. Holds about 700 people. Right in the heart of Seattle with tons of food/bars right by the venue. Also the weather that time of year is pretty nice usually.

Chicago always has the pitchfork festival. It's usually mid July. If you can stand the intense heat and swarms of hipsters it's not that bad of an event at least in terms of ticket prices.

I'm usually tempted to go to it, but with so many festivals going on I can't make it to all of them.

Go to Rain Fest just for Cold World.

and im already annoyed.

we really dont get anything for super awesome music fests up here in the northeast. but the last 2 years, wilco has pretty much been the legs behind Solid Sound Fest at Mass MoCA. couldnt make it the first year, 2010, and last years lineup wasnt fancy enough to get excited about.

well i just checked to see if there was any info for this years lineup...

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass (no bands announced)

Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA

October 5, 6, & 7, 2012

Pros: Lots of awesome bands, the last couple years I've seen Lucero, Justin Townes Earle, Steve Earle, Elvis Costello etc

Free

Golden Gate Park is a great setting - its all grass and you can bring in drinks and just lounge around.

Cons:

1,000,000,000 people

edit: October is San Francisco's summer, so this counts.

I went to the first Rothbury and my two cents is that it's far better than the other festivals that I've been to (namely bonnaroo, lolla and Woodstock 99 (lol, I know)) in that the weather is incredibly tolerable but it is relatively isolated being that it's in Michigan which is a peninsula.

But it's near lake Michigan and Flip City, the best disc golf course I've ever been to, is pretty nearby.

But then again the lineup was great the first year and it's pretty heavy on the electronic flavor now.

Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

This is happening. They had a groupon for it and it sold out in two minuets. Skrillex and Afrojack are the headliners. Daft Punk wasn't announced (yet) so I am not interested (yet).

I've never been to it but what about Middle West Fest? http://middlewestfest.com/ I realize I guess that its more the end of the summer, but still should probably be included.

This was incredible last year. The strip that all of the shows are down is really 'poppin' if you will. Met a bunch of awesome people and saw a bunch of great bands. Definitely my favorite fest thus far.
