Light In The Attic announces Record Store Day 2013 releases: Public Image Ltd., Roky Erickson, Theppabutr Productions, & Mercury Rev

For those who worship at the altar of vinyl, Record Store Day is like Christmas, Eid, Thanksgiving and Diwali, all rolled into one. It's a day when artists and labels celebrate the unsung heroes of the music business – the guys and girls of independent record stores – by releasing super-limited issues, picture discs, rarities and one-offs. It’s a day that we here at Light In The Attic hold dear to our hearts.

To mark this year's event, taking place on Saturday, April 20th, 2013, we have four incredible releases to share with you. Firstly, there's a limited edition (4000 copies, all hand-numbered) of one of the 20th century’s most pivotal singles: Public Image b/w Cowboy Song, the 1978 debut single by former Sex Pistol John Lydon’s new band, Public Image Ltd. The record comes in an exact reproduction of the original fold-out newsprint sleeve, and is available for the first time in the US. Our exploration of Public Image Ltd’s catalog, expressly for the U.S. market, will continue later this year, with the expanded re-release of the group’s debut album First Issue, from which ‘Public Image’ was taken.

Another essential 7", again in a hand-numbered, limited pressing of 4000 but this time on mind-bending psychedelic swirl vinyl, is Mine Mine Mind b/w Bloody Hammer, the snarling Roky Erickson track that welcomed a changed performer back from the brink following the collapse of the Thirteenth Floor Elevators. The single will launch Light In The Attic’s reissue series of Roky’s early solo masterworks.

Theppabutr Productions: The Man Behind The Molam Sound 1972-75 is a double LP in an old-school, tip-on gatefold jacket housed in an o-card, plus a fold-out poster. 400 random copies are pressed on gold wax.  The release follows the celebrated Thai Funk: ZudRangMa compilations and gives an in depth look at the work of the man who was, essentially, the Berry Gordy of Thailand's Molam sound.

Completing the set of ever-so-special releases is Deserted Songs by Mercury Rev. Following the re-release of the band's celebrated Deserter's Songs last year, this album presents, for the first time on vinyl, the rare demos, extra cuts and lost tracks that fell through the cracks of the 1998 classic. Pressed on clear and white vinyl and housed in a hand-numbered tip-on jacket, including an insert with a note from Mercury Rev’s Jonathan Donahue and Grasshopper.

To find out where and how you can get your hands on these records and more, visit the official Record Store Day website. And remember, for as long as there are record stores, Light In The Attic will keep giving you reasons to visit them.

RECORD STORE DAY 2013

FRIGHTENED RABBIT - THE MIDNIGHT ORGAN FIGHT

The band's sophomore album still holds a place in many hearts and its raw honesty is apparent in every note and every breath on 'The Midnight Organ Fight'. The album was never released in the U.S. on vinyl but thankfully that's being righted with this special 2xLP edition of the album packaged with 'Quietly, Now!', a live and acoustic version of the album recorded in a tiny pub in Glasgow that has never been pressed to vinyl anywhere.

Recorded by Peter Katis (Mercury Rev, Interpol) over the space of two weeks, and mixed over the ensuing fortnight, 'The Midnight Organ Fight' was written with the intention of creating a more "pop" sounding album. Yet although musically more immediate vitally, the band have not forsaken the personality or passion of any of their earlier recordings. Scott Hutchinson expands: "I feel the general FR weirdness is still apparent in the lyrics and this makes for an interesting sort of juxtaposition. It sounds kind of clean, but it's actually pretty fucking dirty once you get listening. Saying that, i hope all the reasons why people loved Frightened Rabbit in the first place are still there, only they may have been amplified somewhat."

This special Record Store Day edition is limited to 500 copies in the US and each comes with one of four limited 12"x12" prints featuring artwork by the band's Scott Hutchinson. The prints are all individually numbered and shrinked to the LPs to create four alternate covers on shelves. These prints will not be remade!

Sugar Hill Records Readies Exclusive Record Store Day Releases

Special pressings from Sarah Jarosz, Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson and Willie Nelson out April 20

Nashville, Tenn. (March 19, 2013) – Sugar Hill Records is pleased to announce that it will unveil three new, exclusive releases for Record Store Day (April 20). The varied offerings include a live-performance EP CD from Sarah Jarosz, a vinyl re-issue of the debut album from husband-wife duo Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicolson, and a a never before available vinyl edition of the  “Crazy” demo recordings from the legendary Willie Nelson.

SARAH JAROSZ - LIVE AT THE TROUBADOUR

Recorded in August of 2012, Live at the Troubadour finds the Grammy-nominated acoustic wunderkind in pristine form and marks Jarosz’s debut live recording. The 5-song EP was recorded last August at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, CA. Accompanying herself on mandolin, guitar, and banjo with Alex Hargreaves on fiddle and Nathaniel Smith on cello, Jarosz’s live performances feature a mix of new old-timey ballads and innovative covers.

KASEY CHAMBERS & SHANE NICHOLSON - RATTLIN' BONES

A staple of the Americana genre, Rattlin’ Bones marked the first collaboration for these Australian husband-wife superstars. Having met more than a decade ago, Rattlin’ Bonesmarks the talented couple’s first full-length collaboration originally released in 2008. (Chambers and Nicholson released Wreck & Ruin, their second album of duets, through Sugar Hill Records last fall.) A critical and world-wide success, this marks the very first vinyl pressing of Rattlin’ Bones.

WILLIE NELSON - CRAZY: THE DEMO SESSIONS

As one of popular music’s most celebrated icons, Willie Nelson has enjoyed an illustrious career that has spanned more than 50 years. When Nelson first arrived in Nashville, he spent time as a demo singer and recorded tracks for Ray Price and Hal Smith's publishing company, Pamper Music. Though these cuts were used to pitch songs to artists (including 'Crazy' for Patsy Cline) and producers, many weren't released. These 1960-1966 tracks are raw, real and exceptional, clearly the work of an artist and songwriter headed for stardom.

All three releases are limited-editions.

PORNOGRAPHY

"7 MINUTES IN HEAVEN"

DEBUT 7-INCH ON PAX-AM TO BE RELEASED ON RECORD STORE DAY

thebandpornography.com

Leah Hennessey, Ryan Adams and Johnny T. Yerington, collectively known as Pornography, will add to the deluge of Record Store Day vinyl, when they release their seven song debut 7-inch "7 Minutes In Heaven" April 20 on PAX-AM.

The origins of Pornography the band take about as long to recount as "7 Minutes In Heaven" takes to listen to: Adams and Yerington, whose C.V. includes drumming and co-writing credits on the former's 2003 album Rock N Roll, had a chance encounter with Hennessey at her (sort of) workplace that quickly led to her unknowingly auditioning for their band The Finger. By the close of a 2-hour session that went incredibly well, it was decided this would be a new band entirely--one she then named Pornography--the three of them were well on their way to writing and recording "7 Minutes In Heaven" and another EP and album's worth of material.

"I met Ryan and Johnny in a manic trance of a weekend," Hennessy recalls.  "I told Ryan I wanted to make sad bastard music and the next day he asked me to come sing in his and Johnny's punk band, which is when we wrote and recorded the entirety of 7 minutes in Heaven.  We never give ourselves more than a few minutes to write the songs so we can't really afford to censor ourselves or be less stupid."

"7 Minutes In Heaven" lead track "Last Nite at the Opera" can be streamed/embedded here:

Embed code:

Further information regarding future Pornography releases, live shows, website and socials etc. will all be made available as soon as it can be.

"7 Minutes In Heaven" was recorded at the East Village Recording Center. It was produced by Gus Oberg, who is being pressed into service as the band's bassist when they start playing out (Adams plays bass on the studio recordings). The complete track listing is:

NUMERO ANNOUNCES 2013 INTERATION OF RECORD STORE DAY "POP UP" STORE AND FULL EXCLUSIVE RELEASE PLANS

For the third year in a row, the Numero Group will "pop up" on Record Store Day as a retail store. Much vitriol and hate has been spewed at us in the past for our circumvention of "the rules," and since we're gluttons for punishment (but really because we're slaves to our fans) we're loading up our cars and renting tables in hopes of breaking last year's record of 1062 entrants.

While last year's bonanza found us occupying the the Empty Bottle's 3000 square feet, we've opted for a smaller and more low key space this year. Meet the Comfort Station:

  837.jpg

Located triangularly at the intersections of Kedzie/Milwaukee/Logan Blvd, this turn of the century park district way station has been hosting left field artists for the last half decade. We've been drawn to the building for years, marveling at its odd size and multiple points of entry on our way to $3 movies at the Logan Theater. Last year's event was a massive success, but also a massive headache-we're hoping this cozier space leads to a more enjoyable experience for both Numero and our customers. We'll have every Numero record that is currently in print, plus the following "exclusive" Record Store Day items:

NUM704 Hüsker DüAmusement 2x7"

NUM202.1 Giant HenryBig Baby LP

NUM201.5 CodeineWhat About The Lonely? CD/LP

Additionally, we'll be manufacturing several items you can only buy at Comfort Station that day:

NUM025.5 24-Carat Black: Acetate picture disc 10"

This "acetate" features four songs from our 24-Carat Black tape archive that were scorched beyond use on 2009'sGone: The Promises of Yesterday LP/CD. But given the quality of the songs, we've always felt that the material should be available for the sake of posterity alone. Now, in an edition of 500 copies, you too can experience the sorrow we felt as the source tape disintegrated in front of our eyes. All the drop-outs, hiss, warble, and degradation can be yours by attending our pop-up store on April 20th 2013. It looks like this:

836.jpg

We're also making a series of mix tapes by the working staff of the Numero Group. Ken, Tom, Rob, Zach, Jon, Nate, Dustin, Leland, Michael, and Haley have created 40 minute themed mixes of their favorite released and unreleased Numero songs. Each tape is limited to 20 copies and will be sold for $5. All proceeds go to the Numero RSD lunch fund

In addition to our own junk, we'll have a handful of tables filled with rare, weird, and cheap LPs, 45s, tapes. For the third year in a row, we are not recommending that you only attend our store on Record Store Day. You should definitely visit Reckless (3 locations), Dusty GroovePermanentLaurie's Planet of SoundDave'sJazz Record Mart, andSaki, which will have all of our non-pop up store RSD goods.

So, where are you going to start queueing up at 7AM on April 20th 2013?

Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, is proud to announce the label's all-star line-up of 7" and 12" vinyl titles for Record Store Day 2013, celebrated at independent record stores worldwide on Saturday, April 20, 2013.

For RSD 2013, Legacy is offering limited edition and collectible releases from classic artists including Aerosmith, Cypress Hill, Miles Davis, Dust, Jimi Hendrix, Taj Mahal, Mad Season, Shuggie Otis, Willie Nelson and Sly & the Family Stone.  Legacy will also be releasing, as a double 12" vinyl set, the 20th anniversary edition of the groundbreaking No Alternative compilation.

Now in its sixth year, Record Store Day is an annual day-long celebration of record store culture taking place on the third Saturday in April.  This past January, RSD announced the appointment of Jack White to the post of Record Store Day 2013 Ambassador.

Someday My Prince Will Come - Davis' 1961 successor to Sketches of Spain is an combination of new originals--including tributes to his then-wife, Frances ("Pfrancing"); his producer, Teo Macero ("Teo"); and Columbia Records then-president Goddard Lieberson ("Drad Dog")--alongside pop standards including the title track from the 1937 film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."

DUST

Dust/Hard Attack - Two Albums/One Package - A 2 12" LP In an Individually Numbered Gatefold Jacket

The hard rock trio formed in Brooklyn, New York, Dust--arguably one of America's first heavy metal bands--was the launching pad for the careers of bassist Kenny Aaronson (Bob Dylan, Hall & Oates, Rick Derringer, the New York Dolls); drummer Marc Bell (who played with Richard Hell & the Voidoids before becoming Marky Ramone in 1978); and guitarist Richie Wise (who shifted gears, focusing on his producer skills,  helmed the first two Kiss albums and several platinum and gold records.   Dust recorded two albums--the 1971 self-titled debut and 1972's follow-up Hard Attack--before disbanding. These two records have become highly-sought after collector's items.  More than forty years since their original pressings, Dust and Hard Attack have been remastered from their original analog tapes for this RSD edition, overseen by original Dust members Marc and Kenny.
