A little shameless self-promotion here. I joined a math rock band 6 months ago and we just released our new album. We did a pretty limited vinyl run if anyone is interested.

We've been described as being "Tera Melos for stoners" by Fecking Bahamas.

Late to the party but this fucking slaps. Fantastic record!

  2. Gotta agree, it's not great. There are a few fantastic tracks and then the rest feels like fuzzed out, 80s dad-rock with cringeworthy lyrics. So many people are praising Blue Spade and World Stops Turning, but those are some of my least favourite on the record. Also not a fan of the guitar solos.

If they stuck with the same formula as they did with tracks like Familiar Drugs, Conditional Love, Survivor's Guilt, Committed to the Con, then it would feel like a natural progression for the band. But with the other tracks sprinkled in, it feels like all of the worst parts of their side projects rolled into one.

Still, I'm glad they're back and it brings me great joy to see them enjoying themselves again.

  3. Tell your wife to use public transit, it's safe and goes anywhere she'll need to go. The metro is awesome, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Uber is expensive here!

For stores: Aux 33 Tours for everything (one of the best record stores in the world), Cheap Thrills for the staircase and its proximity to downtown (and a good punk section), Soundcentral, Phonopolis for the eclectic stuff and the donuts nearby (Bernie's), Atom Heart for the stroll up Saint-Laurent or Parc Ave afterward, La Rama for the electronic stuff, Death of Vinyl for the digging, 180g for the hip-hop, and if you want more Francophone vibes check out Francophonies.  There are a few more but those are the ones worth visiting IMO.

Hope your wife enjoys her time here!

    same.

I ended up emailing them, they never responded. But then I reached out via Twitter and they told me the original package was 'lost', so they were nice enough to re-send another. I just received the package today with some cool socks thrown in and a note apologizing for the delay. Pretty cool - and the record sounds great!

  5. I missed out on the pre-order for this thinking it wouldn't sell out (oops!) but luckily found a copy at a local store last week. I gotta say: it sounds fucking fantastic! The three set LP is a bit annoying IMO (because of all the flipping) but I like that they kept all the artwork for each separate EP. Some of these tracks are Mogwai's best, it's so nice to finally have them in my collection.

The magical chaos of Christmas Steps playing during the first big snowfall is what it's all about.

  6. Just saw the news and heard the lead single, it's surprisingly not bad!

    From their webstore:
"Alpha Games was conceived on the road, playing in front of amazing crowds on our last tour and then brought to life with the fire and the frustrations of 2020,” says Kele Okereke on Bloc Party’s first new album in seven years. The first Bloc Party album written and recorded as this four piece; adding the musicality of Justin Harris (bass) and the unbridled energy and power of Louise Bartle on the drums to capture the spark of their live shows and to deliver the most exciting Bloc Party album yet."

Super excited for this. Was able to get the limited the day of.

Just received my copy from ANOST this afternoon. Spinning it now and it's gorgeous as usual! Lots of key-clacking goodness, sweet melodies and just all around lovely tunes. A triumphant ending to this trilogy! I prefer this one to "Lost" but it still doesn't edge out Pino. Still great though.

There's also one song that has a Christmas-y vibe to it, which is very fitting considering the first snow happened today :) This guy can do no wrong.

  9. The song Weed Pin came on my Weekly Recommended playlist a while ago and I liked it without ever going back to check more of their stuff out. This week another track came on after listening to Pup and I'm totally hooked now! Cheer is a banger through and through - and these two new singles are great.

There's so many variants of this though! Bullmoose's descriptive of "collectable properties" is hilarious, too. Gotta collect em all!

  10. The sky-blue S/T arrived today (hooray perks of living in the same city as their distro) and it looks quite nice. But the real exciting part is how it sounds! It's like I'm 12 again. The old mastering just feels right to me. If you were at all disappointed with the re-mastered version, this copy will definitely make you happy!

I was a bit afraid after taking it out because I noticed a cluster of tiiiny indents/almost punctures? halfway through side A, but it plays through just fine somehow. Phew!

If you're still looking for the Crisis repress. They also got Watch Out! and OC/YC.

Thanks! I already have Crisis, Watch Out! and Old Crows but was just really excited about getting the original mixes on the S/T :)

Side note, what a dick move to announce one "limited" pressing and then even more limited ones the next goddamn day. Oh well, it's a good thing Newbury doesn't ship here because it helps with the disappointment.

EDIT: Ah shit, looks like they do ship here nowadays.
