  1. I love this record. the pressing not so much. I'm still making my way through the A side so I hope I'm wrong, but I get quite a bit of extra noise and distortion. The mix is also really bright, I was hoping the vinyl master would tame that a bit, but that's not the case.
  2. I know nothing about tube amps but I'd love to be in your shoes, what a cool opportunity. Let us know how it sounds once you get it up and running.
  3. Agreed. The phono stage in an integrated amp at that price point will probably sound 99% as good as running an external phono preamp into an integrated amp. Differences/improvements in sound quality between phono stages certainly exist, but they are not anywhere as dramatic as they are hyped up to be. That has been my experience anyway. I was running a Cambridge 640p into a Rotel RA1070 because I had a moving coil cart at the time. When I switched back to moving magnet I compared the Cambridge to the Rotel's built-in phono stage and could not tell any difference.
  4. I'm hoping they will somehow top The Great Cold Distance but not holding my breath. I love Katatonia, but sadly I may wait to hear it before ordering, which I didn't with the last two. Also, I agree the 2x10" doesn't make sense with the length, especially if they are adding bonus tracks...
  5. Album of the year (so far), I love it... Also, I think this feels a lot more progressive than their previous albums, though they lost a bit of that trip hop feel that they sometimes had.
  6. If you're probably going to get the acrylic at some point anyway why wait? It actually has a measurable impact on the sound quality, plus it will make it easier to sell down the road if you end up wanting to upgrade.
  7. Sounds like you can't go too wrong with any of those, but I haven't used or heard any of them so I can't speak from experience, just going on reputation. I guess that used NAD seems just a tad pricey compared to what you would get from any of those new units. Are you able to audition any of these items?
  8. Grabbed these on Prime day for $100, no regrets. They sound really detailed, and a lot more spacious than I expected for closed cans. I'm sure they're not the last word in headphone SQ and a tad uncomfortable after about an hour, but I like 'em.
  9. Those look cool, sounds like a fun project too, I should try this sometime.
  10. EQ should be something to just forget about, but sadly there are enough crappy sounding records that I wish I could tweak just a bit. I still don't really touch that tone knob though.
  11. I would have smacked you if you had! Enjoy! Looks like a beast. I love my Rotel but wish it had the DAC/digital inputs.
  12. I still have to get one set up again, surround sound is fun. I have my leftover stuff in the living room for the TV; it's a pretty big space and sounds pretty bad at the moment because my mains are small and I don't have any surrounds. I want to build four of these plus a center. Same drivers as my towers so they should sound really good. The main challenge will be keeping the grublets from smashing those tweeters.
  13. I agree, no need for ports with music, I would avoid that for sure. I have two of these: http://www.amazon.com/Pinnacle-SUBcompact-Subwoofer-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B0021AERB0 Ugly and small and the basketball is not included, but they put out plenty of clean, detailed bass. I snatched a pair off ebay for right around $300 a few years ago but they're more scarce now. For comparison, I also have a HSU Research sub for the TV which is great for movies, but these little cubes destroy it in a music setup. Someday I'd like to build a DIY version of something like this from Rythmik.
  14. Cool, I will. Weird that their site never came up in my searches, they need some SEO badly...
  15. Wow. What happened to your Omegas? I'm still really intrigued by the whole single driver thing... I guess you found something you liked better.
  16. If you want something that sounds like a boom box, surely you could find one on Craigslist?
  17. I know! Those things are bloody uncomfortable... but this is my listening space so I don't exactly want the kids hanging out there too much.
  18. Interesting. I've heard of the Lounge but then I don't think I ever found their site for some reason... how did you buy it?
  19. Nope, should I have? I actually built that shelf from scratch and I intentionally did not add any dividers so I could fit more records haha...
  20. Do it! I wish I could do it just to see how they sound.
  21. Thanks. I couldn't stomach the cost of a VPI. This does the same thing (except I manually rotate the platter), and It's disguised as a handsome piece of furniture, sort of. The whole thing probably cost me $100.
  22. Haha... yep. I don't know a single human being in real life that understands my love for audio. I need somewhere to geek out.
  23. You want powered speakers correct? It would help to know what your budget is... but for example I grabbed a pair of Alesis M1 monitors for like $50 from an Amazon open box deal. You have to be pretty close to them, and they won't exactly fill a room, but they sound very good for what they are.
