  1. I work around 60-80 hours a week, obviously no other job, tuition's covered and I get a stipend of about $23k a year (OMG, the internets knows how much money I make!). I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with my research, but I'm enough into it now that I want to come in on weekends. Overall, I'm pretty happy to be doing what I'm doing, but I've been wanting to be a full-time researcher for a long time now. Also, programs across areas of study differ in whether or not you get any support. Most social sciences grad students have to teach to pay their tuition and have something to live on, so it takes them 8-10 years to graduate sometimes (don't take my word for it though, this is something I've heard, not experienced). I think that's pretty stupid, personally, and that I'm lucky I'm interested in one of the biological sciences and have support.
  2. No problem, I don't know a lot, but I know enough to tell you that you're almost certainly going to be just fine. Let us know how it goes.
  3. Flicker started a thread about this a while ago, here's one of the links from that thread: http://www.reuels.com/reuels/Silk_Screen_Printing_Instructions.html This is another tutorial/site I found that seems like it needs less equipment but probably doesn't make quite as good of a print. http://stencilpunks.mattrunningnaked.com/ Damn, I'm posting a lot today, for me at least.
  4. Dude, stop posting that picture of my mom. She's not a Steelers fan anymore.
  5. yeah, well the rest of my blood work is for anxiety, weight loss, and abdominal pains. the ab. pains have gone away since the order is from may and i didn't go cause i thought i had the wrong paper. but im not sure. i might just be sick, or sick on top of this. i drove 27 hours straight from RI to FL 2 weeks ago, and have had a little bit of a hard time getting to bed, and take into consideration staying up til midnight or later watching the ball games, and on 2-3 of those nights drinking myself retarded...i may have just worn myself out. i also had mono last june, hoping it's not shitty relapse of that. Hmm... Sounds like you have a good idea about the best thing for you, and that's rest. Your symptoms do kind of sound like mono, but it could be any of a variety of things. They will be able to do most things with a blood sample, i.e. white cell count like Thomas said. Unfortunately, all of your symptoms could just be the result of anxiety. Not to say screw you for being anxious, but that it might be hard to find a discrete cause or a simple fix. You've probably just got some kind of injection and at worst a plugged up lymph node. I think you're going to be fine. One thing I meant to say earlier is that its unlikely that you'd have any nerve damage from a lymph node biopsy. The dude's father who had some sensory loss for sure had something more serious than you do.
  6. So? If that's not the choice you'd make, don't. But you can't really call a dude out for wanting a more rare version, its not your choice. Is it worth internet drama? Is it worth taking the time to type a reply?
  7. I've mentioned this before, but I was in med school for two years prior to grad school, so I know a bit (not a lot!) about this kind of thing. You've got a lot of lymph nodes in your neck, so don't be surprised if you've never noticed this one before. The reason people keep bringing up cancer is that when cancer starts spreading, one of the first places it goes is your lymph nodes. That's why they usually take them out in breast cancer cases because they can grow there and just keep on spreading. I would say that more cancers don't spread, but some do. It depends on a lot of different things. This explanation doesn't really help you, since it doesn't sound like you have cancer (either from your symptoms or from what you said). So. Should you get it removed? Ask your doc why he thinks it should get taken out. If its not serious and you don't mind the lump, i.e. it doesn't hurt or look really bizarre, there's no reason to get it removed. Say its been two weeks, and they're worried about something serious, like cancer, then you should get it removed. The incision won't be very big, you probably won't feel much while they're doing it, and the scar won't be noticeable. My girlfriend had her thyroid taken out a couple years ago (before we started dating) and her scar is right on the front of her neck and I only see it if I'm looking for it. Obviously, everyone's results are different, but the procedure itself is pretty minor as far as these things go. Should you get a second opinion? Sure, if you want to. Most folks go to the doctor with a fistful of printouts from WebMD anyway, so I would start there. If your doc doesn't mention something, ask them about it. They're there to help you, not to make decisions for you that you're not happy with. Again, obviously there's cases where docs should help make decisions, and some where they shouldn't. Not trying to start an internet argument. I hope this just goes away and its a fall cold or something (happens to me a lot). Good luck and feel free to ask me questions or totally disagree with me because I'm an idiot.
  8. My 6th grade teacher ended up getting arrested for showing child porn to some of his (later) students. Yikes. He was kind of a freak though, so none of us were really shocked. He also told my parents I was never going to succeed in life because I talked too much in class. Now I'm a grad student and make a quarter the salary my friends from undergrad do, shows what he knows.
  9. I'm surprised Shook Ones aren't doing a cover, since, well, they sound a lot like Kid Dynamite.
  10. Just FYI: 1-2-3-4 Go! has the new LP, their split with Something's Wrong and (what I think is) their second 7" We Do What We Want right now. Sorry, its a compilation with them as one of five bands. Anyway! You can order the repress of their first 7" from No Idea, but if you're reading this thread you probably already knew that.
  11. My dad sends those things out too, like finding out that Obama smokes is as big of a deal to find out as the fact that McCain is really fucking old. I've never replied, by email at least, to any of them because I just don't want to get into it. Family drama is really dumb, sorry to hear you got sucked in. You're not wrong though, everyone should read up on things and think for themselves instead of just hitting forward and nodding their head.
  12. I was actually coming on here to ask about this. It sounds like a poor way to address political differences. Of course, I feel the same way about American politics. I'm really sorry you have to deal with this stuff Yu, looks like a shitty situation for basically everyone.
  13. That's amazing. I used to have to go to Pottery Barn for my emo bedding, now its everywhere. At least indie bedding is still hard to come by, you just can't beat those thread counts.
  14. The truth is that we have never reported to soundscan, but our friends at side one asked for our vinyl sales' numbers as they report their sales to soundscan through their mailorder. And our conversations with soundscan got me to thinking why don't we offer soundscan numbers and at the end of the day, we decided to see what it would take. Just this morning we received our account number and in about a week and a half, we will be reporting sales to soundscan. Sounds like that'll be good for the bands whose records you sell, since you move a lot of records. Thanks for the info!
  15. Hey Virgil, do you report your numbers to SoundScan, or whoever keeps track for the billboard charts? My understanding (from reading about this on the board at some point) was that vinyl sales aren't reported, or at least independent stores like yours aren't, and that's one reason why those numbers don't really represent the reality of record sales.
  16. Glad to hear it, I love his music. Thanks for the heads up!
  17. Thanks for the heads up, I would have missed this otherwise.
  18. that was pretty easy...lucky I was here when these went up
  19. I have a Music Of The Quakers 10". It was the first record I spun on my new turntable.
  20. Holy crap, congratulations! Best of luck too, if its the first kid, it can take a while.
  21. Congrats, the first year goes fast... Ask me about the second year in, well, another year.
