Have your lawyers talk to the major label lawyers and make sure everything is legal.

Whatever you do, do not contact the artist. The artist should definitely not know that some random dude is pressing their album until the records are in hand and preorders are launched.

and therein lies the problem. this expectation of "customer service" from a couple of guys putting out records themselves as a side thing and not a big business who can devote their time and energy to fixing people's small problems. it bums me out so much seeing how people hold small labels like this to the same standards as amazon or best buy.

Nothing personal, but if my significant other was buying 4 copies of every album for "investment" purposes, I'd probably leave her real quick as well.

I'm sorry but reading that article made me laugh my ass off. Seriously, the guy came to do the much hyped interview then felt it was too long to write himself so he just let the label write it? I don't smell any more controversy than this band should be checking with their manager as to why this slipped but this article is a pathetic excuse for journalism.

Yes. It is BEYOND possible to press records that cheap still. I do it, and we keep pressing runs under 400 copies.
Don't believe the hype: these inflated prices are only to make extra money.
We just did a double LP, and only pressed 100 copies. Our cost on it was like $23. That was our most expensive release....but there were only 100 of them! Part of the high cost was that we had to master it for vinyl twice using two different companies - we spent over $1000 just to cut the lacquers. It was ridiculous, but I would do it again any day.
That being said, I am thrilled to own an OG of this record.

Got my hopes up by calling them "older". Those are some of the newest records they've put out.

My whole point was that music shouldn't be treated like other "businesses". In independent music, labels and bands commingle and cooperate to build scenes and communities that support each other. Most labels do all their work on the side of a "real job" and never see a profit beyond what is dumped into the next release. That's certainly not to say you can't make money or be successful, but if your attitude isn't people over money, you shouldn't get to fly the "independent label" banner. Some of the comments in here are disgusting - basically saying fuck this band, they're bad people for not following through on a business deal, nothing but support for Ross because he mails my records on time, I am willing to shout down anyone who takes issue with how he does business because I want this album on vinyl. If your slavish devotion to acquiring material relics supersedes your interest in the relationship between an artist and their work and how it's presented, then get the fuck off my lawn.

Your a little behind on this. It was clear comms between us & ETR were lost along the way sometime last year. We as a band never discussed anything about ETR's project, for the info was never relayed to us or even followed up on. This is why it was such a surprise when it released the other day.
& why wouldn't we deserve free copies? Any record of ours pressed by other labels has always given the band free copies for the collection. It's just a nice jester. I'm not going to pay for my own music. The amount of heart we put into making it I think we deserve at least a copy for each member. But that's just me, the 1 of 5 guys who pulled his hair out for 3weeks while recording it.
As for as my knowledge we didn't ask him to bail on production. & our "tweets" were never intended to stir shit. Merely to let people know we had no part in its production & ours will come with "extras" for the 10yr. I really don't see how that stirs things up, actually yes I do. Misinterpretations of what we said somehow turned into "bashing ETR", or "telling people not to buy it". We never did any of that.
Regardless it's still cool to see it in vinyl form. I think ETR did a good job. I'm not mad at ETR one bit, he beat us to the punch fair & square.

Thats kind of a dumb statement, you clearly don't own a business. Someone that does the same thing as you and could get an opportunity instead of you means they're a competitor. Its totally possible to run a business and make smart business decisions while also doing it for the love.

You know whats really stupid? A band giving PERMISSION and their blessing for a label to do something.

Then the label spends THOUSANDS of dollars setting it up and pressing it, etc.

Then the band stirs shit, acting as if they didnt give the OK, and then not understanding why Ross/ETR couldn't just bail out on the project without losing thousands of dollars.

THEN THEY ASK FOR SOME FREE COPIES. Really? ETR's release isn't cool but you want some free copies?

Look, anyone with any business background, or just plain common sense, can understand why ETR couldn't just bail out on this halfway through the pressing, when the band's manager even apologized for not getting back to him.

Additionally, its completely legal and legit. Ross didn't EVEN HAVE TO reach out to the band, but he did out of respect. If you know anything about ETR's history, they don't press things if the band is not cool with it, ever. They've gotton permission from labels who own all the rights in the past, but turned the pressing down because the band wasn't giving approval. So the band can't even act as if they didn't give Ross the OK to begin with because ETR has never, ever done that to a band.
