kurtz got a reaction from Courtesyandgoodwill in OG pressings of Hum's You'd Prefer an Astronaut available here 2/25?!?!
Robotic Empire was in contact with the band about repressing this and the band said they didn't want it repressed.
He then did the respectable thing and let it go.
1st step when releasing any record should always be contact the band. IMO a release like this is nothing more than a legal bootleg.

Some people have a weird perception that legality and morality have any sort of consistent relationship.

It seems ruthlessly capitalistic to say "the creators of this art didn't have anything to do with this repressing and in fact appear to be upset about it, but I need my colored vinylss and I need them now, so... they're lazy! Fuck 'em!"
Hum hasn't been a band consistently in over 10 years, why should they be expected to be on top of trying to keep their catalog in print when they apparently don't even have complete control over it?
Yeah, the repress may very well be legal. However, it doesn't seem like a hard task to let a band know when you are interested in reissuing their work, and yet so many represses seem to happen without the artist's knowledge or consent because it's not "legally required".

If you can't get a hold of the band don't put out the record. Seems like a simple concept that everyone likes to ignore. Sure you legally can do it, but that doesn't make it morally correct.

It truly seems like it should be common courtesy at this point to confer with ALL parties involved (label AND band) before moving forward with a licensing project.
To me, not doing so means that the persons licensing out the release are either inconsiderate or they know that they band won't be interested and this act will prevent their cash grab from taking place.

You have like 10 albums, and 200 records.

There seems to be some misguided notions on the costs of pressing records in this thread.
Let's round UP a bunch of numbers:
Mastering/Lacquers from Lucky: $400
Pressing of 1250 records via Rainbo (across 3 colors): $2627 (this number also assumes 180g for all three colorways, FYI)
2000 gatefold jackets with spot gloss: $3500
Shipping from the plant: probably about $600-700
Poly sleeves: $262 (2000 3 mil) and $135 for 500 4 mil sleeves
Grand total: $7624 or $6.10 per record
Now, let's assume that the label charged them $5000 (which is totally insane) for licensing rights.
$12,624 or $10.10 per record
This includes both colors and the sub color also. They will make $27,487 for just this release - a profit of no less than $10K.
You guys are being raped by this project, and the fact that you're 100% cool with it is very alarming.

Just to clear one thing up... I am not confusing ETR guy with Virgil. The "independent music and drink craft beer" comment was a joke about this board. Apparently nobody in this thead has been around long enough to remember those t-shirts. (or remember when this board cared about independent music).
Now please continue calling me an asshole and licensing albums without talking to the artists.

kurtz got a reaction from AlexH. in Third Eye Blind - S/T
Nobody is saying ETR is not going thru the correct legal channels. It is just unethical to do these reissues without the band's consent or input.

This has been brought up with every release.
There is a difference between legal and moral.
Get the band's permission or don't put out the record.

When are you going to learn that if you can't get in touch with the band, or the band doesn't respond, to NOT RELEASE THEIR ALBUMS. I get that you're a 'fan', but that doesn't entitle you to releasing someone's music without their permission, even though 'you went through the proper channels." No, you didn't.

I'm sure a lot of people at these GOP rallies are going to rush home to listen to this flexi. And it's definately going to make them change their minds about everything they believe politically.
Good job Street Dogs. Great idea!
