I'm so late to this but the only mistake Reggie Jackson made was apologizing. Baseball is way too big brother about people talking reality.

Extras? I'm a sucker for screened covers as an option.

It will only damage them emotionally. Never let an LP touch a 45 - that's pervert shit.
Really, if you are just taking pics then be careful and it is fine.

I guess I connect more to music than bands. Lot's of albums mean a ton to me but those same bands have released some awful stuff. It strikes me as odd to spend a lot of money on a record you haven't heard and hold no attachment to.
You are essentially pre-ordering nostalgia and meaning.

No doubt. I had Yankees Season tix for years with my Dad. At the ball park I reconnected with him on a level I never thought possible when I was 18. Shared experiences are pretty valuable.
Anyway, I don't have to understand it fully. It isn't for me and that doesn't mean I hold a moral authority to judge your purchase. I am in a similar spot in life where I have more expendable income due to a lesser social life and increased income - if you connect with this band in a way that spending $750 makes sense then I can understand that.

In the most respectful way possible I really want to understand:
What makes a brand new record worth $250 - $750 to you? At that price, will you actually play it or is it just a collectible?
I promise I'm not out to make fun of anyone, I will mock no responses. I really just want to understand. I've been collecting for a long time and have never approached paying close to that. The two times I spent $100 on an item I regretted it instantly and sold them back off to recover cost. To me, at these prices, especially with a band that no longer is compensating a middle man, this simply doesn't make sense. No one has heard the record. I can somewhat understand people that pay $200 for a record that holds mighty levels of nostalgia but this is a new item.
Anyway, I write this with respect, I would like to see a reasonable discussion follow.

Since this thread leaves me very uncomfortable I want to share this really eloquent essay on shared/pirated music. I have no intention of shaming anyone but this is such a well put argument that there is nothing I can say that will approach it.

This isn't a tragedy. It was miserable and the response is more an indication of people sick of a culture where an adult takes abuse like this at the hands of shitty kids because they hold so little authority or power. If she responded with one harsh comment she could be written up and with unemployment so high I'm certain people are taking more shit in the workplace so as to give no excuse to be fired.
She doesn't deserve that much money and I still hope she creates a scholarship. What we are seeing is a reaction from people like myself who are pissed at the state of crappy parents and a society so worried about Political Correctness and lawsuits that few are willing to take action.

I didn't think explaining the quality of his arguments was necessary, I found it well thought out and rooted in personal knowledge. The economic breakdown itself speaks volumes. I like that it's tailored to a younger audience but doesn't speak down to them as it acknowledges the differences in our experiences coming of age.
If anyone wants to have a dialogue with me about the changing economics of the TV/Indie Film Industry and how piracy, the internet and decline of dvd sales has impacted it then hit me with a PM. I won't do it here as I'm not going to deal with trolls but what I've dealt with over the past 10 years closely mirrors the music industry. To give a brief breakdown: I'm producing the same amount of TV hours annually, I'm working with 30-40% less money in my budget and a company that had 10-12 people on staff only has 5-6 now. Same work, less money. Anyone who is aspiring to a creative field needs to understand that while there might be more colleges and larger classroom sizes that no one is telling you that the industry is changing rapidly and sustainability has meant cut backs. Yes, this is part of living in a recession BUT this began before the recession and it's regrettable that the two are now being confused and that our current economy is now being used as an explanation in places it doesn't fully apply.

So now you want me to your dirty work and send you a live link to an album? Yeah I found one, it took all of two seconds but Im not sending it to you. Especially with someone like Jack White who runs his own label, so he is getting all the money from the release and not some major label that is screwing him over. That is like going to a show and taking shit right off the merch table and walking away without paying.

This remark really fascinates me. How difficult will it have to get for you to illegally download music before you actually decide that paying for it is easier? Is there some sort of nobility in spending all day trying to track down an active download link of an album that's readily available on iTunes/Bandcamp/Amazon MP3/etc? I will never understand this attitude.

He is right, illegally downloading music has gotten much harder. Hell, I remember back in 99 we only had Napster to download with and it took a whole day to download one track, now there are thousands of sites you can do it from and get an album in 3 minutes. It sure has gotten harder these days
Just buy the damn music and stop making excuses to make it feel ok to steal it.

I had posted David Lowery's letter in the Dropbox thread a few days ago. I still find his argument to be one of the most eloquent anti-piracy perspectives to date. Emily might not feel too bad about accumulating that much music without paying - and she is partially correct that a lot of it was obtained legally - but the model she desires is unsustainable for the musicians and therefore a detriment to any creative future. Her story about sitting on the floor at her college station and ripping cds however is mind blowing to me. Those are not provided for her personal convenience, they are for the station to benefit not an individual.
Lowery's letter went viral and I've been waiting for an NPR or Emily response.
Side Note: I hated Cracker but Camper Van Beethoven was pretty cool.
