  1. Any Chemex fans here? I alternate between that and Aeropress for my morning/afternoon cups. I like my stuff hot and black. When I buy coffee from a shop, I always get espresso because it's the one thing I can't make myself. If I'm feeling really dead, I'll get a Red Eye (drip coffee with an espresso shot).

Still trying to find a reliable source for tasty fresh roasted beans in the Burbank/North Hollywood area that doesn't charge $18 for a 12 oz. bag.

  2. The quality isn't the greatest but it's more watchable than any download I have. There's one episode on the DVD that the picture glitches. Whatever can't expect them to put full HD restoration on a nickelodeon show from 1993. I don't know how much effort it takes for a job like that..but I'm a photographer and editing one photo can be a pain in the ass sometimes. I couldn't imagine every frame...

Yeah there's one episode with a black hole in multiple frames. Ironically, I think it's the "I am a Dot" episode. Wish season 3 would get a release. An HD remaster of the entire series would be amazing. Someone should crowd fund THAT.

  3. I just want to clarify for anyone else who is confused: There is no version of In Utero that is not a Steve Albini mix. The original LP and CD were mixed by Albini with some very light work done on All Apologies and Heart Shaped Box by Scott Lit. The untouched versions of those songs were included on the Super Deluxe Anniversary Edition as bonus tracks.

There was also a run of the Back to Black vinyl release in Europe that included the All Apologies and Heart Shaped Box untouched. Most things floating around the internet claiming to be the "Albini Mix" are just a rip of the European Back to Black vinyl.

There is no significantly different version of the In Utero except for the 2013 mix, which was also done by Steve Albini. He, Dave Grohl, and Krist Novoselic revisited the original tapes and swapped in some alternate takes, as well as remixed the album in an attempt to create something new for fans.

TL;DR - If you want all versions of In Utero, look no further than the Super Deluxe Anniversary Edition.

  4. Actually guys, he's right. The tracking weight changes slightly when the tonearm isn't perfectly level. That's why pros will advise against cheaper digital scales, because those don't have thin enough measuring plates and your readings will be off since the tonearm isn't level when you use them.

Either way, the difference isn't huge, but you can compensate by increasing tracking weight by 0.1 - 0.2 grams.

Though the acrylic platter shouldn't require any adjusting, remember that you're using it without the mat, as far as I know the thickness is pretty much identical to the standard platter with the mat on it.

  5. Here's another vote to check out the O2. Amazing little amp. I have the JDSLabs build and love it.

I use the separates version of the ODAC for my digital tunes, but as mooseblues mentioned above you can also get a combined O2/ODAC. Setup is as follows: turntable + DAC on separate inputs > integrated amp > tape out > cable under the rug > headphone amp which sits on a side table next to my listening chair.

  6. Airplay would be what I would want to try, considering I already have all my music in a central Mac mini running iTunes .You can get older Airport Express stations for ~$30 each. Ideally these would be hooked up to powered ceiling speakers with wall volume controls, but any set of speakers with an auxiliary input will work.. You'd get lossless bitperfect playback up to 16bit 44.1kHz (definitely good enough for ambient levels). Additional advantages to this solution are 1) Airport Express stations can also be used as wifi signal extenders in combination with an Airport Extreme router, 2) any iOS device can Airplay to any one Airport Express, so anyone in the house should be able to personalize their own room's audio even if there is music going on the main system.
