  1. for the LA people, i hear comme ça in west hollywood has poutine. i have yet to make it myself, but omg i've had it in montreal and damn if it's probably the best thing i've ever put in my mouth. there's a place in redondo beach that also makes it, but it's gross. bad gravy. bad fries. cheese curds not chewy enough.
  2. it must depend on the store. i called around at all the local hot topics when i was looking for that thrice record and most of them were helpful. the only one i'd say where it was contrary to that was the thousand oaks one by my parents'. the girl who picked up the phone sounded angry that i was even calling. the best help i got was at the hot topic in westminster mall and the one in irvine spectrum. same with the one in fairbanks, AK--the store that actually had it. the girl who i talked to was really helpful, aside from the whole not being able to ship it to me thing.
  3. yeah you went through way too much for that. when i bought the other one the lady in the store asked me if i knew you. sadly, they have stopped carrying vinyl and there are only leftover to pick through. it sucks. oh hey, +1 for the heads up. i'm still very appreciative that you posted that your local store had them. despite the hassle, the price i paid + my friend's lack of awareness of media mail postage was still much better than what the ebay going rate for it was at the time. i have no idea if it's gone up at all like the other thrice records have. i wondered whether that store carried anymore vinyl since i wasn't seeing fairbanks on any of the lists travis has been posting. that's a bummer.
  4. We longer do store to store transfers, its so stupid. If we did store transfers still i would have some much awesome vinyl from other stores haha ya, i had to post on my facebook if anyone knew anyone in fairbanks, alaska who could get me one of the beggars albums that was on clearance there earlier this year. a friend of a friend actually did it for me, it seemed like such a long shot. before that, i had tried calling the AK store, my local store and the main customer service line to see if anyone could ship it to me or locally, but came up on basically what you guys are saying about store transfers.
  5. i'm not sure why, but my husband got me the best of blondie. he said the ones i put on my list are too obscure (apparently for stores in OC, CA to carry). he drove around 2 days ago to the 5+ stores in the area and couldn't find it. he always waits until the last minute and doesn't want to order online because it'd ruin the surprise. i don't dislike this album, but i already have it on cd. lol. edit: now that i think of it, he might've told his sister to order what i wanted online and i don't think they get the concept of it being the norm for most records to travel through media mail and taking forever to get here and she also waits until the last minute to buy stuff. i didn't get anything from her whereas my husband and kid did. so i guess i might get my xmas present in about a week. on my bday...
  6. my husband just had the hitachino white at a local hole in the wall at happy hour. nice! I was surprised to see a lot of other chatter about it here since I hadn't heard of it before. another one of I've had is the bruery's four calling birds, which I took a taste of in their tasting room here in oc. bold! as for Xmas eve, we had a pretty laid back French meal, some stuff my aunt sent me from over there with a baguette, wine, trader Joe's vintage ale and a cake called a bûche de nöel for dessert. we watched some Xmas cartoons with the kid and I spent an hour driving around looking for an open post office to mail a record that needed to go out. I wanted to let my daughter open one present but my husband said no. it turned out ok because since our parents didn't get us anything because they've all been ill, we didn't have a bunch to open anyway. today, we listened to a bunch of Xmas music, my husband is grilling a tri tip and I'm making a savory bread pudding stuffing and either English peas or brussel sprouts.
  7. I've never paid anyone for a gift before good point. i used my husband's paypal to buy it though and getting a box of goodies to open in the mail is always nicer than bills.
  8. i'm pretty amazed this arrived here in CA so quickly. getting mine today felt like getting a xmas present from b9. <3
  9. Quite presumptuous of him to assume that would be considered returning the favor haha. i know, he's kind of a weird guy. i know i don't want a random guy's finger in my bunghole. HAHA.
  10. you can still get STDs when you use a condom. it just decreases your chances. i'm not one to be saying anything against sleeping with random people though. i'm not really sure how girls can go about getting into sexual situations and end up bleeding onto the guy. it's never happened with me and i've been consistently active for about the last 17 years (i'm not THAT old, i just lost my virginity kind of early...) yet not to get TMI but i don't have the most predictable cycle. i will say that the grossest thing ever that i think beats out blood on the face is a friend of mine said he was getting a beej from a random chick at a party. he wanted to return the favor by sticking his finger in her ass. he pulled it out only to find poop on his finger. WTF. he told me he had to rub it with toothpaste and stick it in an orange just to get the smell out. WTF.
  11. this. i'm not sure if you have kids Melvin scam but mine's really difficult to put to sleep. I lock my gate at nappy time and most people take the hint. all the other ups delivery men (there's about 4 that sub or share the route) don't have a problem following directions. I fail to see how just leaving my package at the gate (rather than going to the trouble of crossing my neighbor's yard to get to my front door) or being honest is equivalent to walking on eggshells.
  12. now is just a bad time to buy those hard to find thrice records. the supposed reissues notwithstanding, they just released an album, announced a hiatus and as people said, it's holiday time. there's more attention on them than usual right now. wait a bit and it'll die down, or get a reissue. i got the alchemy index + extra 10" for $160ppd sometime in the summer. i still think that's a lot, but it was closer to market value than these ones going for >$200. then again, i think it's just a matter of how badly do you really want it? i'm certainly guilty of getting things now because i didn't feel like going through the unknown of how much longer i'd have to go looking for a good deal.
  13. lol. to be fair, i think the generalization is more the norm than my husband's experience. it's also a time management thing with some people in private practice because there are some people at his firm who come in after 9am and then stay pretty late (after 9pm). my husband goes in around 6am so he can get home for dinner and to have a few hours with the kiddo. one of his co-worker friends would be there and not get home until just before the kids went down so he'd see them for a couple minutes. but ya, those large firms can really be soul sucking right from the get go. not quite as extreme as your friend went through but a couple of my husband's classmates who graduated at the top of their class and then got nice high paying jobs at the huge firms in downtown LA would practically sleep in their offices. bummer city.
  14. i can totally relate to this but instead, it's one of my stupid ups guys. there are specific directions that i left with my local ups headquarters about not ringing the bell (since they always seem to come when my daughter is sleeping) and all the other drivers are aware of it, they even ask me if something happened to cause a note to be in their driver system or whatever it is they look at when they drop stuff off. this one guy either didn't read it or ignored it and when the combination of his knocking, doorbell ringing and my dog barking woke my kid up, i chased him down the street and asked him what the hell he was doing and he lied and said the directions told him to go around my neighbors yard to get to the door since my gate is locked. i was like whaaaaaaaaaaaaat? my postman, on the other hand, is cool. always says hi and gingerly places my records through the gate on the walkway, ready for me to fetch when i'm free.
  15. Absolutely, and I work at home full-time. I still work 50-60 hours a week, but it's generally on my own schedule. IMHO, the quality of life difference far outweighs the financial gap between public service and being in private practice. hi jordan, i didn't know you posted here! my husband works at a smallish (about 100 attorneys) firm so, while i'm sure he doesn't dictate his schedule as much as you probably can, it's pretty loose. he's been able to take time off during the day to watch hockey scrimmages at the training facility, run errands, have lunch with me whenever i'm in the area, go to the pediatrician with me and the kid... it'd be nice to have more monie$ from a bigger firm, but this does work out nicely. on the flipside, he has a certain number of hours to meet so if he takes off during the day, he goes in super early and comes home a bit later than normal, but about 95% of the time we're able to have dinner together as a family rather than him toiling away in the office until everyone else at home is asleep like some of his friends.
  16. I do live there. I went to the Hollywood and Highland mall. I parked on the Street where Hollywood High and where Jimmy Kimmel does his outdoor concert series. Broad daylight too. It was around 1:30pm. i think it's the holiday season, unfortunately. crime rates go up. did you report it? my husband used to live on mariposa off wilshire, between 7th and 8th. we used to walk down to the wiltern for concerts, work out at the 24 hr fitness by there... we didn't spend much time at H&H though. the last time i was there, i was 8 mo.s pregnant and went to a show at the knitting factory. i'd be surprised, too, that someone'd be bold enough to pull something like that off there, but then i guess that's why he did it that way, with the gun and all.
  17. that sucks, where'd it happen? in another thread i think you said you live in k-town. my husband used to live there. it sucks that you lost your stuff and that you had the scare of a lifetime, but at least he didn't end up hurting you.
  18. haha, nice. i like blue and i think that goes nice with the cover actually. i almost bought it but decided to pass. glad you got what you were looking for.
  19. I think I saw one at the hot topic in irvine spectrum on wednesday. you could always call and ask...
  20. \je parle francais!!!! but not really. I studied in paris for a semester though Just got back home actually nice. i always wanted to do that, but i didn't want to leave the people i was dating at the time. i'm not a real big believer in long distance relationships. in hindsight, i wish i would've gone in college because the bf at the time was a waste of time. of course, that's hindsight for you... i'm sure your french is better than you think or are letting on though because immersion works wonders. tu as étudié où à paris? et quel sujet? my cousins live in troyes and lyon. i have a close "ta ta" who lives outside of paris in nogent sur marne. both my mother and MIL lived in paris though--my mother in the 9th arrondisement on the rue de rome.
  21. hey... be glad your wives AREN'T into records because i'm into clothes, shoes, handbags AND records. expensive habits... and i don't work. i got my husband some cigars, a maglite because he needs one, candy and a work shirt.
  22. craigslist, too. totally unrelated to records though. just had a shitty experience today.
  23. that auction that went up to $152 is back down to $56. the bid must've gotten canceled or retracted.
