Let's make a Ska Mix tape!

Recommended Posts

My GF's dad wants me to make a CD that well represents the Ska Genre.

Not being an avid listener of ska but knowing that more than a lot of you listen to the genre and know it's history a lot more, I need some help in making this.

I know a lot of people are scratching thier head, let me put it to you this way. I gave him a copy of the suburban home sampler (the one with Joey Cape on the cover) and he loved it. He listens to just about everything from every time. So I was thinking of a nice historical journey though Ska's history

I am thinking

Mustard Plug

Bomb The Music Industry

Might Might Bosstones

Fishbone

Big D And the Kids Table

Operation Ivy

goldfinger

Real Big fish

Old No Doubt (Pre Tragic Kingdom)

Aquabats

Less Than Jake

The Toasters

Who else should make an appearance?

I know they're not typically classified as a ska band, but Millencolin's 1st US release had "airhead" on it and that definitely has a ska feel to it. Actually a lot of that record does.

Also:

Skavoovie and the Epitones

Ruder Than You

Inspector 7

Undercover S.K.A.

Scofflaws

(maybe Goldfinger's first record?)

All I had to do was look at the old bomber jacket I used to wear.

I think you'd do well to go through the following bands and pick some pretty representative songs:

Skatalites - "Naked City" (This is just a favorite)

Prince Buster - "Al Capone"

Alton Ellis - "Rocksteady"

Desmond Dekker - "007 (Shanty Town)"

Specials - "Gangsters" or "A Message to You"

Madness - "One Step Beyond"

Bad Manners - "Lip Up Fatty"

Toasters - "Don't Let the Bastards Grind You Down"

Less Than Jake - "Johhny Quest"

Pietasters - "Girl Take it Easy" or "Out All Night"

Slackers - "Married Girl" (lots of songs here, this is a favorite)

Hepcat - "No Worries"

Reel Big Fish - "Sellout"

Bosstones - "Someday I Suppose" or "Impression that I get"

I think that would be a good intro to the various ska eras, although there might be some newer stuff I'm not as aware of. There are lots more bands I love (Edna's Goldfish, Hippos, Dr. Ring Ding, Eastern Standard Time) but it depends how lengthy you'd want to make this.
