lokithelion
Some prick stole my bike. I need a new one. Are there any good brands of fixed or single speed that are around 500? I might look on craigslist for one. I'm going to be using this for commuting to work, and for riding down town, and I dont go off road, so I'm think a light fixed or single speed would be good since I'll have to carry that shit upstairs. What are the benefits? Anyone got a preference? I know this place is full of bike dorks.

lokithelion
What is wrong with fixies?
mcm1610
Hipsters. Apparently they were banned because too many people were crashing into each other because they don't have hand-brakes and people are retarded.

rtw88
What is wrong with fixies? Well, they don't have gears so it makes riding on hills a pain in the ass because you can't change the speed going up, and the pedals keep spinning going down since fixies don't have freewheels. magalvsr13
fixed gears are dumb
millen
Somebody stole my bike as well, so I went and got a motorcycle.
blueswan
I prefer riding freewheel. It helps keep you in control of the bike a lot better, especially if you're carving turns and riding through traffic regularly. I like being able to maneuver while going fast, and you only have to get hit by a car once to know that it sucks.

iliketurtles
www.bikesdirect.com has some good deals on ok bikes most have brakes and flip flop hubs to keep the naysayers happy.
monk0nuggets
I tried to ride a fixed gear for the first time the other day. It was pretty fun to just ride around the block a few times, but I can't image using this to commute through traffic at all. That would be scary as all hell. lokithelion
Is a fixed the one where you have to pedel back to stop?
Just Another Tom
You can get fixed gear bikes that have hand brakes. There is a UK company called Create that makes some nice ones. http://www.createbikes.com/ Not that much help for you guys in the states but i am sure you can still get similar ones. monk0nuggets
Is a fixed the one where you have to pedel back to stop? You can't pedal backward if you are moving forward. You just have to try to stop pedaling.
impact
get a single with a flip flop hub so you can make it a fixed if you please
mcm1610
I ride a BMX, so I can't say much, but why are people against gears?
riddle350
I ride a BMX, so I can't say much, but why are people against gears? If you are commuting having no gears reduces the weight of the bike plus there are less parts to maintain.

oakland
As much as I like the simple look of a fixed gear bike, they are utterly impractical. Get a nice freewheel and a rear break you hipster douche bags.

Get a nice freewheel and a rear break you hipster douche bags. They're fun, that's all. Ride your bike either way, it's good for you and it's an exciting way to relate to your environment rather than just plowing through it.
