sgoodcore
From salon.com: We've all heard about the major disappointment of yesterday's Senate Finance Committee meeting. But the defeat of the public option wasn't the senators' only poor decision of the day. As the Associated Press reports, the committee spent the evening approving a measure to restore $50 million of federal funding to abstinence-only sex education. http://www.salon.com/mwt/broadsheet/feature/2009/09/30/abstinence/index.html?source=rss&aim=/mwt/broadsheet/feature What a bunch of ass hats. blueeyedtheory
Such an awful idea. You have to present all information to be educational and informative. Just because you're strictly teaching abstinence, it doesn't mean all the kids are going to blindly follow that path, so you have to be able to help the other kids as well. Such is government, though. You're with them or you're not a part of their world.
sgoodcore
I don't think its a government thing, I think its a who-we-elect thing. We need to rid ourselves of these moronic pseudo conservatives who want the government in the bedroom and out of social work.
adammuzzy
i'm kinda out of the loop as far as this healthcare thing, but why should the government spend money on healthcare again?
sgoodcore
i'm kinda out of the loop as far as this healthcare thing, but why should the government spend money on healthcare again? Because health insurance companies require competition to drive rates down and provide good care to people for starters.
adammuzzy
hm. health care's pretty lame. i don't know if it's the case for every state, but i know it's mandatory in massachusetts. i don't really understand why we can't decide if we want to have health insurance or not. saxamaphone
Fuck all those poor sick and dying people. They're poor because they're lazy, am I right? We gotta teach the kids that premarital, non-heterosexual sex makes baby Jesus cry! And condoms never work, kids! In fact, they give you THE AIDS! mcm1610
Because of collusion. I don't understand why more people aren't concerned about the health industry jamming their fists in our collective asshole. If there was a public option, there's one provider ready to break the under-handed agreements that the rest of the companies agree on. danthemjfan23
that NewLeftMedia video that markovianprocess posted yesterday was really sad. my grandma is like those people. she watches fox news and thinks glenn beck is great for our country, but doesn't know that before he was on fox, he was talking about how terrible the healthcare in this country is. he had to have surgery, and videotaped himself laying in bed afterwards talking about how "if this is how they treat the president of GM (who also went to the same hospital beck did to have his surgery), how do they treat regular, working-class folks?" and how it's a disgrace that such a powerful country can have such a terrible system. 6 months later, he's hired by fox and talking about how "america has the best healthcare system in the world!" "why change what's not broken?" and these idiots eat it up because it reinforces what they WANT to believe. i'm not saying everything on fox news is bullshit. i'm not saying everything on any other channel should be taken as gospel. what i am saying is that people need to wise up and get their news/beliefs/morals/values/education from more than one source before they go out and vote for anything. it was sickening to see how many people in that video posted couldn't even answer "what are you angry about, specifically?" because they have no idea what they're angry about. they're just mad because there's a black man (or "a dag gum muslim", as one person in another video so elloquently put it) in the white house. but people don't WANT to go out and learn the truth on their own. it takes too much work. it takes too much time. it's easier to crack open another bud light and flip on fox news. it's re-assuring to hear your own ignorant beliefs spewed back at you by the talking heads. people are scared by change in this country, but they're even more scared of the truth and that, to me, is fucking depressing. sgoodcore
I agree dan but the nice part is, at least based on poll data, a mass majority of people know we need reform. So I live in a little cocoon where these protesting idiots, Birthers, etc are just a loud micro-minority.
danthemjfan23
while that may be true, sammy, if you watch the video (and i'm sure you did, that's not what i'm getting at) you'd notice that all the people in the video "know we need reform" as well. so if voting in a poll, they'd click that option for sure. they just think we need reform " 'cause that freakin' negro's dun gone crazy," not because they know we've had a fucked up system for 50 years. the mass majority, as you put it, knows we need reform, but each person (according to their party affiliation) believes it's the other party's fault for having a bad system. like in the video, people were complaining about Obama and his czars. when the host of the video (who was EXCELLENT, by the way) told them that czars were initially created by the Reagan administration, and that they don't really have any power anyway and that they're just consultants/advisors, they were still upset with Obama for his decisions. it's not about logic, it's not about reason. it's about party affiliation and (while many people don't admit it outright, in many cases) skin color. mcm1610
I'm only one chapter in, but if you read Obama's Audacity of Hope he hits on all this stuff, and about how it's an either/or mentality to all of politics.
