jhulud
I finally watched this documentary this past weekend. Good film. I have read the book that it's based off of but watching in and hearing the music is a completely different experience. The only thing that kinda sucked about it was the exclusion of The Dead Kennedys and The Misfits. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Hardcore_%28film%
riddle350
I really need to see this.
jhulud
I watched it at like 2am as I was checking out the OnDemand choices on my local cable. I saw it and immediately selected it to watch it.
ps
My wife and I saw it this past weekend, and we both enjoyed it. I don't know why they left out DK though. Its playing on Starz movie channel, so if you got it keep an eye out.
sgoodcore
I was surprised the focus was so heavily Bad Brains and Minor Threat/Dischord/Ian but it was good
jacobe
I enjoyed it, but they skip over a majority of the midwest.
jhulud
I was surprised the focus was so heavily Bad Brains and Minor Threat/Dischord/Ian but it was good And Black Flag. I guess in the grand scheme of the genre, those three bands are considered the forefathers of hardcore punk. DK and Misfits were left out due to some legal issues with using the name and footage and nonsense like that. Understandable.
robotnerd
yeah, they left out a lot... but i still LOVED it. i was surprised they left out the minutemen. they're not "hardcore" persey, but still... i mean, mike watt was in it... but very very little mention of the minutemen. oakland
As a director you've got to make choices, otherwise the film would be six hours long. I think leaving the Minutemen out was a no-brainer. If you're doing a film called American Hardcore, your first place to cut is bands that are from other countries and bands that aren't hardcore bands. As far as leaving out the Dead Kennedys and the Misfits, I'm a little confused by that choice too. You could argue that neither are truly hardcore bands I guess. I think that's pushing it though. I though the whole thing was a little boring honestly. It was such a "good ol' days' sort of film. I personally am not one to live in the past and to constantly complain about the new wave of bands or whatever. It happened, let's move on. Guest scriptedrain
It looks like a good watch, but I think Oakland is right on a couple things. You can't have everything in there, someone will always complain about exclusions and inclusions in any documentary, and it's cool to look back on periods of time, but sometimes it's best to leave those times where they are and reflect rather than yearn. - Jeff
kirbypuckett
I really enjoyed this documentary. I want to pick up the book.

While it might have been reminiscent for some I think it serves as a good introduction for others who weren't around or who weren't listening at that time. jhulud
I really enjoyed this documentary. I want to pick up the book. The book is good. It's more in-depth than the film. But since in an interview style, it does get rather annoying...
oakland
Dance of Days is a great book too, if you're interested in the D.C. scene.
jhulud
Dance of Days is a great book too, if you're interested in the D.C. scene. I actually liked that one better than American Hardcore. I was not completely familiar with the DC scene and this book was a good introduction especially with the smaller and lesser known bands. oakland
The author is a really nice guy too. On a side note, he stayed with us on his book tour for that book, and he was supposed to leave D.C. on Sept. 11, 2001. He was sitting in his plane, on the runway, when they suddenly told everyone they had to get off. They evacuated the plane right there on the runway and when they got out, of course, there was smoke everywhere from the Pentagon being hit. It's right across the river from Reagan (national). tommytumult
The Dead Kenndys and the Misfits were left out because of legal reasons. They mentioned it in the commentary on the DVD.
Guest falloutcollapse
this makes me wonder. in a few 10 years, will there be a movie out called American Emo?

matt
this makes me wonder. in a few 10 years, will there be a movie out called American Emo? if its about emabrace, rites of spring, hwm, elliot, moss icon, evergreen, indian summer, sdre, mineral, and braid then im all for it i think this movie does a good take of what hardcore is/was during that time period. obviously DK and the misfits would be in here if they ccould be. id have liked to see more midwest stuff with poison idea but i understand that obviously black flag, bad brains, and minor threat are going to be the main focus.
