In another thread someone was debating purchasing these:

I can't think of anything better for this price.

MSRP: $0.00 pair

Special Price: $284.00 pair

I'd wait for the special to go off ;)

and if you want to go cheap, I'd buy one of these cables and connect it directly to some PC speakers using the built-in amp

(RCA female to 3.5mm male)

Speakers - as in most things audio-related - are a subjective thing. What sounds good to me might not be your cuppa. Your best bet is to audition the speakers if at all possible.

Personally, I always go the vintage route. I like the aesthetic and usually you're able to get a lot more bang for your buck. You're always at risk of picking up a piece of vintage gear that is on the verge of needing repairs, but you'd be surprised at how durable and well-made speakers from the 60s and 70s were. Plus, a lot of folks keep their equipment in great shape and often do restorations on their own. Right now I have a pair of Genesis Model 10s and Avid 102As (via Craigslist) that were very well cared for and in the case of the former, the owner had just refoamed the woofers. The Genesis 10s cost me $45 and the Avids were $40. Both sound terrific, especially considering what I paid.

Going vintage always requires more research, but if you tell me where you live, I can check the local CL and give you a few suggestions. In most cases, people selling their speakers on Craigslist will be happy to let you audition them before buying.

If you feel safer with something new (and cheap), check these out: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Insignia%26%23153%3B+-+6-1/2%22+Bass-Reflex+Bookshelf+Speakers+(Pair)/7705307.p?id=1138085354138&skuId=7705307

$70 and you can listen to them first, assuming there's a BB nearby.

Google "Insignia NS-B2111" and you'll find tons of positive feedback, including on the vintage audio forums. I have no personal experience with these, but I seriously see them mentioned all the time.

These seem really nice, like you said, nothing but positive feedback. These aren't available at my local store, but I'm gonna be looking for other models and stores so I can test it out, or just test out the brand. I'm not really looking for vintage speakers, but thanks for the help.

If I can't find anything cheaper at all that I think I'd like, I've set my mind on getting these FOR SURE.

If anyone is still willing to give help, I'm looking at these speakers, and it says it has a "built-in amplifier". Does this mean I won't need a pre-amp to run this with a Pro-Ject Debut III??

I don't think that would be an ideal set up....I'm no pro, but those seem to be more nicer computer speakers?

I have an lp120 and i just run it through the built in pre-amp and play them through my computer speakers. I just have a normal logitech setup with subwoofer. i'm sure if you spend the extra money on an external pre-amp and nice speakers, you'll get better quality, but it doesn't sound bad with just computer speakers.

You'll still need a phono pre-amp with these.

Listen to them before you buy anything. Have them play some cd of your choice and if possible try it with the same components you have at home or at least something similar.

I changed my cheap speaker set 2 years ago. I visited the local hifi store and told them my budget (around 400 euro).

I think I tried about 5 or 6 sets of speakers before I found what suited my tastes. They had Bose (way better than expected or maybe I just have shitty ears), Canton, Chario, Jbl. I ended up getting a good deal on the Chario Silhouette and I'm so happy with them.
