Anyone goin to FunFunFun Fest in Austin?

Recommended Posts

Holy shit, just read about the Danzig set. Please tell me someone here witnessed it.

Hi. I book the fest. Those that are hating could NOT be more wrong. Yes, someone has your money and ripped you off. His name is Glenn. Stop by his house in LA with some kitty litter in trade for your refund, but we still had to pay him and he didn't deserve it after what he pulled. Here is how it went down...check the timeline:

-glenn flies in this morning and says he has a cold and doesn't want feel like playing the show. he demands french onion soup and vitamins brought to his hotel suite. he wants to soup now and wants it hot. we get it.

-glenn says it's freezing in austin and he can't go on. says it's going to be 28 degrees tonight and he won't perform (keep in mind, it's currently 71 and sunny with a night forecast of maybe 50+). he says we have to move the show/festival inside if we want him to play (obviously, that's not possible).

-we rent stage heaters (no other bands, public enemy, mcd, passion pit, etc need or want heaters on stage...it's warm up there and not cold out) for glenn per demand, as well as bring in an onsite doctor to make him happy and be there if his cold doesn't go away.

-agents and managers assure us he's going to play now.

-glenn's band/crew arrive before him in the afternoon and load gear. they said it all works, they get up the danzig banner, check lights, are happy.

-glenn arrives at 7:45 (half hour before showtime, they go on at 8:15 exactly and have a 90 min set...park curfew by the city/police is 10pm sharp)...when he arrives, he says he's not going to play. says he doesn't like how the banners are hung on stage and doesn't like the lighting or stage size (all this was advanced in email and phone well in advance and the band/crew loaded in mid day and were happy with it and said it would work...stage wasn't small at all). he wouldn't leave his trailer to go look at the stage, though, so the lighting company drew up specs for him to look at of the stage lighting 50 feet from his trailer and brought it to him to look over and prove him wrong.

-in the meantime, glenn's bodyguard gets pushy (literally) with murder city devils manager and tells them they can't have their friends watch MCD from stage and wants them to cut their set. kicks them off stage and gets physical with the band and stafff....oh, also danzig says he's just as big as slayer and slayer is playing a bigger stage on sunday and that's bullshit and wants to play the same stage slayer is playing...or won't play. makes him look bad.

-it's now 8:15 and time for them to go on. the band is ready, corpse make ups done, guitars tunes. glenn says he's not playing and that it's too cold outside. he said big stages should have windscreen so wind can't blow on him from the side. the stage managers then goes and gets tarps and tarp the entire side of the stage so now wind will hit him.

-it's now 8:40. we explain that it's cutting into the set and he's going to have cut the 90 min set if he doesn't play soon, as park curfew is 10. he says he doesn't feel like playing. says "i got a deathbug. if i go on stage and get sick, i'll die. i'm not getting sicker for this show" (NOTE: he totally looks and seems fine...no coughing, no paleness, no vomiting, just some balding and a gut, from what i can tell). we get the Dr and he says he can do a b12 shot or anything he needs if he feels bad...danzig says he only treats illnesses naturally, so won't do that. we finally get him to agree to play and have already informed his crew that it's only 60 mins (9pm at this point) and they start cutting some songs from the set list, so they can still do misfits, but obviously didn't cut enough.

-they went on almost and hour late due to the HANDS DOWN biggest rock star moment we've ever dealt with and then he tries to start a riot and blames the fest, the city, the cops and everyone, but himself. goes backstage and tries to fight a few ppl and get in the van and leaves.

the end....

we're bummed to. we wanted to hear Skulls.

hah!! that write up is just as vagina tastic as I hoped. I'm actually proud and somewhat surprised that the crowd wasn't having his shit. Good job, Austin. I got a tear in my eye for Texas...as well as a SHITLOAD OF DUST.

It was surreal as fuck seeing Errol and Mike irl. I would very much enjoy (and encourage) all VC'ers to come to a fest sometime. Austin is a crazy bird...even if you hate Texas you'd enjoy Austin. I find something new to love/hate every time I visit.

So, if Graham is a total douche, Danzig is the infected, swollen twat he attempted to clean. You can't put a notorious primadonna on at a fest and not expect this kind of crap, but Graham always tries to go for bigger and better each fest it seems. He genuinely wants to put together great gatherings that are accessible to many in both size and spanse of genres. This year I felt like FFF is getting a little TOO big for my taste, but all good things catch on eventually so I expected it. Last year was my first FFF and it was the BEST thing I did all year. All 3 days/nights and I was barely even tired until Sunday evening...this new Auditorium Shores shit though... no sir, I don't like it. It's where all the huge acts played for SXSW earlier this year. I didn't wanna go there then, I didn't want to go there now but Bastard Samurai is a rad motherfucker and hooked me up with a ticket for my broke, living-at-home-again ass.

My highlights would have to be the Red 7 after show on Saturday with Deafheaven, Boris, and Russian Circles. I heard the Boris set at the actual fest on Sunday was terrible, but they played beautifully Saturday night. Russian Circles, hands down, favorite part of the whole weekend, though. Non stop ripping with Errol and his soft bitch Canadian crew :)

Hum was goddamn incredible, loud, pitch perfect. I felt honored to see them. Eyehategod sounded great too. Rollins was entertaining as expected but the stage they had him on was too small and he could've used about 4 more apple boxes stacked to get him high enough for people 2-300 deep to see him from the back. I saw his head and his arms a couple times if I squinted. Del was great, always good to see quality hip hop at these things. I heard they replaced Rakim with Kool Keith one night which was also a stellar choice. Kid Dynamite was real fun although I'm pretty sure I was talking Canadaland with Errol through more than most of it (I know Mike, I know lol) Brian Posehn lived his dream, opening for Slayer. He was funny as always but you could tell he was a little nervous/anxious with his idols following him.

Ceremony gave me a sad... and I was sporting their shirt on Sunday. I can't tell if they just aren't a fest band or if they consistently suck live. I've seen them 3 times and only once was it decent. At SXSW they were over 25 minutes late to play an aftershow and I ditched them to see OWTH.

I'm honestly surprised Odd Future was asked back, naturally shit went down at their set but like fuck I was over there to see it (read: SLAYYYYEEERRRRRRRRR).

All in all a good time but what with the drought this year and the change in venue it made for a pretty miserably dusty weekend. I miss Zilker already. :(

I think I misread the blurb about Danzig's BS....part of Danzig's crew was trying to watch Murder City Devils and Gabe (their manager/roadie) threw Danzig's crew off the side stage and got into a scuffle with Danzig's band.....or the other way around?

glenn's bouncer was telling the friends of mcd that they couldn't be on stage and watch the band and got pushy with mcd's manager. not to mention glenn or his bouncer got pushy with the stage manager as well. from what my friend who was working back there, the crew and band were nice and very understanding. the only problem was glenn and his bouncer. in the end glenn stefani is basically a diva and BIG FREEDIA is upset because apparently she though she was the only one.

ruled. had a fun time meeting y'all, although I was running around so much I barely saw any of you after the first day.

Public Enemy, Slayer, Blonde Redhead, Mates Of State, Four Tet, Childish Gambino, Del, Cecil Otter, Touché Amoré, YACHT, Spank Rock ripped it.

nites: Touché Amoré/Ceremony on the pedestrian bridge was incredible. Glass Candy at Mohawk was perfect. Russian Circles and Deafheaven were great, missed Boris at each spot though.

slight bummers: Wugazi, Cave In (boring setlist), Danzig (duh), Kool Keith @ Empire (started late and was half ass)

PIP FTW. most worth it purchase ever for drinks and meals. getting into the nite shows with little hassle helped too.

and now I'm about to watch Modest Mouse at Stubb's!

I did not, but we did Hoboken Pie, Casino el Camino, Magnolia Cafe, 24 Diner, Stubb's, Whataburger and Taco Cabana.

i love hoboken. it's not homeslice, but it's the better pizza downtown.

canino is awesome. it use to be better, but it's still good. the bar itself is great.

magnolia: sorry, we're open.

24 diner french toast is fuckin' good.

taco cabana.. like taco bell, but sooooo much better.

stubbs has good sides, but the bbq isn't that great.

nailed it. I had some jalapeño chicken breast thing at Casino El Camino that was awesome though. usually nothing is hot enough for me but that had my mouth burning.

Taco Cabana was awesome. and kinda funny when about a block away from Taco Bell.

I feel like I've eaten out more this trip than I have the last 6 months. my friend in Austin wanted me to try all these different places and was always wanting to eat.

  • 1 year later...

Anyone going this year? This will be my 5th FFF, and probably the most disappointing lineup for me so far, although it's really more of just a fun place to hang out with friends and run into everyone. Looking forward to catching Impossibles, Dismemberment Plan, Descendents, FLAG, Cloud Nothings, Lee Fields and Dessa. Regardless of lineup, it's always a pretty swell time.
