smeepo
I'm not super familiar with Sunn amps, but what I do know is that they are loud and have very unique distortion. I also know people really like them for doom metal. If you're into that, you could check out a Sovtek Mig 60, 100 or 100H. They're also super loud, but based on the Marshall Plexi. Honestly, with tube amps, as long as you don't drop the damn things, they'll be just fine. Older amps need to be upkept just like a car. Good power tubes last 3-4 years and good pre amp tubes last 4-5 years. Electrolytic capacitors last 10-15 years (in my case, 36 years). The fortunate thing with SS amps is obviously that you don't have so many parts that wear out, but even they can be problematic over time. Do you run pedals with your rig? Sunn works for massive volume and clarity so they're great for pedals and pushing air I use a filled PT-Grande which is a little excessive but it works out well with the concert bass I've always wanted to try a Mig 100 but never have the cash when they show up I'm back to considering the Super Twin because one just popped up for a pretty good price, low enough that it wouldn't hurt too much if it shorted
smeepo
I would way opt for a Twin Reverb, or even a Quad/Super Reverb. Those Super Twin Reverbs are really heavy. Can't find a true spec of the weight, but in the neighborhood of 80-90 pounds.

I figured the weight wouldn't be too big of an issue since I've been lifting stupid Peavey cabs for a while and I've adjusted to the obnoxious weight/size. I should sleep on the Super Twin, I just keep thinking the volume can't be that high because it's a combo and I'm not used to it so I have to constantly remind myself 180 watt tube, combo or not is way too much for bedroom level stuff. Really holding out for a non crazy priced Beta Lead combo at the moment but they're getting harder and harder to come by
IG88
never buy a sunn solid state amp over a tube one.

I haven't tried their tube stuff yet but my concert bass, concert lead, and concert PA have all done me well so far! If their tube amps weren't crazy expensive right now I'd be more inclined to give them a go

I played through one of the later models of the Dual Showman, blackface with red knobs, and with the volume at zero, it was putting out an audible signal through the cab I was playing through. At about .5, it got quieter and then the tubes started to open up at 1 and it sounded much better than at 0. Seems just ridiculous to me for an amp to be that loud without a master volume. It's unusable in a bedroom space, but obviously it wasn't meant for that. You will be much more satisfied with a Bassman 100/135 or Dual Showman Reverb (Twin Reverb circuit in a 100W head). If you really want the combo, look no further than a plain ol' Twin Reverb.

The regular Twin is a great option, it's just a bit out of my price range I'm leaning towards $300-600 currently, for some reason regular twins are like 8-900 over here
smeepo
I have seen the silverface reissue Twins go for about $500-$600 on CL before. You should be able to come across Quad and Super Reverbs for about that much too. One of them has 4x12s and one has 4x10s. I don't remember which one is which. It was just too loud and took up too much space. I sold it for $750, but I think you could get one for less. I see them for 600ish often enough. Multiverse
My friend just scored a mini Korg and that is crazy enough. This thing looks unreal. It's so daunting but so much fun. This is my first synth so I literally just sat here for an hour and made laser sounds while browsing. Hoping to find my way around this thing soon
Tardcore
Just ordered a Vox AC15. For whatever reason, Sweetwater has the Two Tone edition (AC15C1TV - $550) on sale for quite a bit cheaper than the standard AC15C1 - $630). Might be fun to ABY it with my Blues Jr.
parkinglot
I was given a Peavy Valve King 112 when I got my first electric guitar about 5 years ago. I've never looked into amps really. Are they any good?
YouTwo
Been thinking about getting an AC15. But all I can afford now is the VR version. Which honestly would probably suit my needs fine. But I'm hoping to save for the AC15C1.

I had an VT-40 for a while that was fun.

I had an VT-40 for a while that was fun. Actually I have a VT-15 now. It's fun to mess around with. But I play with a group in church and it just seems to small (The other guitar player is playing a Fender Reverb Deluxe). The VR series is lighter than the C1 which would make it easier to carry back and forth. And i'm not playing any professional gigs or anything. It also has 2 different styles of overdrive which would make it more versatile for home use. I just haven't played one personally yet. Tardcore
I guess the 12" speaker might get you there. When it comes to volume, 15 tube watts are much louder than 15 solid state watts though. The 22 tube watts in the DRRI should smoke the VR at higher volume settings.

They're great tubes amps for the price. Lots of gain on tap. Pretty good for a pedal platform. Overall, cheap components and cheap manufacturing make for a somewhat unreliable rig and the stock speaker sucks pretty badly. Swap out the cheap components when they go bad, and the speaker, and you'll end up with a solid amplifier. If you care enough about that, anyway. paynegretzky
Just moved into a new house and made this my "office." No new gear since my last post a while ago in here, but the setup is much cleaner, plus I'm not in an apartment anymore so I can actually play with the volume above 2. the guitars are: Norman acoustic Jaguar deluxe bass Mustang Kobain Epiphone casino coupe
Black Phillip
What brand is that stand?^ The one I have doesn't have any where near that amount of spacing between instruments.
paynegretzky
What brand is that stand?^ The one I have doesn't have any where near that amount of spacing between instruments. It's "Hercules" - has 5 slots for guitar necks and 2 additional ones in a bag that snap on. So much room - now I haaaaave to buy more guitars... Tardcore
you have to be a little careful with some of the cheaper stands out there. They may use padding that will discolor or eat through the finish on your guitar. Particularly an issue with Gibsons or any guitar with a nitro finish. Most reputable stand manufacturers (example String Swing) will address this somewhere in their specs. Otherwise, you have to go hunt for anecdotal information.
