booyahachieved
double post sidenote: i use a calculator because i'm paranoid about short changing a server with my shitty math skills, not because i'm trying to save money. Whoa... I also do these things. Practically verbatim. That final total better end with some D0UBLE ZER0S!
Brock N Roll
When I was 19, I delivered pizzas for papa johns and one night I delivered a pizza to a local casino/hotel and the guy who ordered it opened the door and said, I don't know how much my total is but I had a great night at the casino so here ya go. He handed me two 100 dollar bills. His total was less than 30 bucks. somethingvinyl
jtcohenour
I don't eat anywhere fancy (Red Robin being the most expensive meal for me). But I do make sure to tip above 18%. Last time I went there specifically, it was pretty busy yet the waitress was on top of her game and very friendly. It was a $25 bill and I left her $7. As a car wash worker, people tip me quite often which I always appreciate. I try to pass that on to others who have a shittier job than I do, and still keep a smile on their face. mcm1610
Question: when ordering take-out, do you guys tip? I never know. I work part time at an ice rink and eat a lot of my dinners in the office there and there's a nice bar/grill next door that I order from. I never know if I'm supposed to be tipping. I think not, since there isn't any actual table service. Do cooks get tipped out by servers? If they do, I feel like I'm shorting them by not tipping. Also, similarly, if I order a sub from a sub place (Jim's Steakout or whatever local place, not Subway), they often have a tip jar but I don't think I've ever put a penny in those things. Don't know why, because I feel I'm pretty generous when I eat out.
jtcohenour
I worked at Chili's for a few years and filled plenty of take out orders. Honestly I think I was only tipped 10% of the time on these orders.

Don't know why, because I feel I'm pretty generous when I eat out. I worked at a sandwich shop while I was in high school. For us, the tip jar was just a nice bonus. It's not like the tips paid my wages. Most of the tipping came from regulars that were in the restaurant all the time. Most nights I'd end up with 2-5 dollars and some nights nothing at all. It was always nice to get a big tip though. One time a lady emptied all the change out of her purse into the jar. It was around $20. She was just shoveling handfuls of coins out, haha. It was great. valve
in somewhat relation to this thread, I went out to eat over the weekend and they automatically added the tip to the bill, it was about 80 bucks for the both of us or so and I probably would of tipped more than they included but I was so irritated by the situation I just signed and left him what he gave himself. for some reason those type of situations dont sit well with me, I work in the food service industry myself and always take care of my bartenders and servers, but when it comes down to it, it is gratuity and it should be up to me to decided what I want to leave Some of the Michelin star restaurants or very fancy restaurants do this automatically even if you're only in a party of 2 or 3. I guess their servers must get shafted a lot on $100+ orders that they just decided to add 20% to the tab. I have never worked in the food industry, but I remember 13 years ago working in the Best Buy computer department a guy gave me a $50 tip for telling him to get a significantly cheaper laptop than what he was looking at. Just for word processing and stuff. I probably could have got in trouble if anyone knew about that, but that was a pretty damn good day. I've had other customers tip me $5 to $10 for giving them good advice (not the scumbag sell them every peripheral advice) on stuff.
edgedestroys
Excluding bad service obviously, I try to tip decently. Something like $3 on bills up to $10 at cheap places and after that I just add to it what usually amounts to 30% give or take, sometimes more if I just don't give a damn about what I'm spending at all. I don't have a lot of money but I understand that food service can be really shitty. I've had plenty of friends that are/were servers and have mentioned how stoked they are when they get good tips. The way I see it, if I can afford to go out and eat, I can afford to help see to it that someone else can.
paintedinexile
Ran up a $65 tab at the bar last night. Tipped them $15 for an even $80.
