can someone please explain to me why the world (especially the US) is collectively losing their shit over Russia annexing Crimea?

There are both complicated and simple answers.

Simple answer:

A sovereign nation cannot just annex land from another sovereign nation. Hitler did this in the 30's when Germany annexed Poland. Also, Crimea has the largest naval base on the Black Sea and it also is the site of the oil and natural gas pipeline that supplies much of western Europe with energy fuel.

So recapping, it's strategically important for military and economic reasons as well as impeding on another nation's sovereignty.

Complicated Answer:

The Ukraine was the first country to split from the Soviet Union. They dislike Russia for basically enslaving them for much of the 20th century.

Other Eastern Bloc countries (former USSR nations and other European formerly communist countries) are sweating that Russia is trying to rebuild the Eastern Bloc. So Poland, Lithuania, Croatia, etc. are not happy. Again, Hitler basically started World War II by doing something similar to Poland (he basically said that Poland was German now because he said so).

NATO has sworn to protect many of these countries of which the Ukraine may have been joining NATO now that their anti NATO President was recently deposed, something that Putin in Russia probably was paying attention to since NATO controls the only entrance into the Black Sea.

So, the annexation has everyone sweating because it is potentially a prelude to the largest War in Europe since WWII.

I could go on, but you already probably stopped reading.

stressing out about money and i cannot concentrate on work now. my job doesn't pay me enough to keep living in this house, and i don't want to play landlord and have a stranger living in my house, and i don't even know how to begin going about trying to sell this place because i don't have any money in the first place.

is getting a second job an option?

can you do a sale by owner as is, try to make a least a few K. move stuff into storage and just rent a cheaper place until you get the monies?

the issue there is not having an extra cent at all for storage and rent/mortgage

also i have no idea what i'm doing when it comes to selling a house, heh

looks like that is the next step. i told my boss back in the summer that i was probably going to have to do that, and if they need me to work extra, well tough shit. i work at a marketing company so sometimes the deadlines are such that we work long unpredictable hours.

what about Crimea voting to become Russian instead of Ukranian? is that an allowable thing? was that coerced/rigged by Russia?

i am so super dumb when it comes to world issues like this, but like to keep abreast of the situation so i kind of sound smart if someone brings it up.

yeah, and all treatments are ala cart. so if you need to get a mole removed or something, you pay for that separately and pay for the visit, then you need stitches, you pay for that separately and pay for the visit.

my deductible raised from $500 to $1000, but EVERYTHING counts toward it now, all my copays, all the ala cart stuff.

I never reached my $500 deductible in the past, and I can't really see myself reaching the $1000 now even though every single dollar I pay in goes toward it. ahh well.

I thought i'd let the sickness run it's course. and I was just getting better over st. paddys weekend, and now I'm sick again. I've just been heavily self medicating :)

Oh wow that sounds super expensive. =\  I totally understand your self medicating.  I hope you feel better =[

whooooa you guys have high copays. do you have a ppo or hmo?

one of the only benefits of working here is pretty good insurance, but we keep having to pay more and more for it, though that's pretty common across the boards.

my primary physician is $15, specialist is $25, and ER is $50.

I was so spoiled between both my parents working for the state and having incredible health benefits (that our current governor is now trying to take away! Yay!).  Up to year 26 I didn't have any copays or deductibles.

Yeah mine are $10/$20. We have a max out of pocket cost of $2,500 annually so they cover everything at an 80/20 split until we hit the OOP, than they cover everything at 100%. We'll probably hit it with the baby next month so I'm waiting to check on a handful of minor ailments until then!

That sounds very similar to my health plan, with the exception of your awesome copays.  Mine are $30/$50.  Ugh.

I have my annual coming up. Need blood work and my fear of needles already has me sweating.

You can do it!  I used to be afraid of needles.  Unfortunately the more you have it done the less it phases you.

I wish I could give blood. I lived in Germany during the era of mad cow disease so I am permanently prohibited from giving blood. Watch out, I'm tainted!!!

I didn't know you lived in Germany!  Wow.  I can't give blood either due to my ITP.  I also can't donate platelets (not that I have many to go around), bone marrow, stem cells.  It makes me feel really crappy.  At a Gin Blossom's show two years ago they were promoting some organization that requires bone marrow donors.  I went to the tent to have my swab done and they told me no. =[

Bone marrow extraction SUCKS.  I don't think people who are donors really understand that.  This girl I used to be friends with is flaunting the fact that she's an ~official bone marrow donor now after she flat out made fun of me for having ITP back in 2005/6.  I had a bone marrow biopsy to rule out Leukemia and she couldn't care less.  She was just mad that my procedure ruined her plans with me.  So I hope she doesn't realize how shitty the procedure is and is called on to donate. /rant.  Sorry lol.

The United Nations basically told Russia last night that without objective UN auditors being there, they do not recognize the vote nor the annexation. They said that they suspect bully tactics were present at the polls coercing people to vote the way they did. Keep in mind Crimea is only roughly 54% Cultural Russians with 24% Ukrainians and 12 % Tatars (who the Soviet Union attempted to eradicate). So Russia saying that 82% of Crimea voting does not seem plausible nor does the just under 97% pro Russia vote.

So it certainly looks like the vote was rigged.

there was no option to remain part of ukraine. it was either be independent or be part of russia. and the results were sketchy at best, things like a city with 300k voter base with a vote tally of 470+k

bussed tables at age 17. that is it.

The UN does not normally support Secession without cause.

Just because some cultural Russians do not want Ukrainian rule when they are not a vast majority does not necessarily make Secession valid. Analysts say that Crimea is a money sink for the Ukraine, but they more than likely do a better job than Russia would do for them as Russians tend to not like non Russians in their country.

Makes me feel shitty too. My sister in-laws mother in-law got diagnosed with leukemia a couple years back and needed plasma. I went to donate, they asked a bunch of questions then denied me and told me it was because of the whole mad cow thing. It was a terrible feeling. Plus knowing that I can't donate ever just makes me feel like a terrible person.

Omg =[  That's awful.  I know it's an awful feeling not being able to help with things like that, but at least you can support their recovery in ways that only a family can.
