monk0nuggets
Well hello y'all. It's been a minute. I've been lurking occasionally, but mostly needed some time away. Now, I need your help. I'm currenty sitting in a Buffalo concourse awaiting to board a work related flight to Austin and I need some recommendations on things to check out. Was thinking of hitting up one of the Alamo Drafthouses and possibly End of an Era. Any other must see/dos?
radiatorhums
I posted a thread earlier about record stores down there, might help you a bit. http://boards.vinylcollective.com/topic/94352-austin-record-store-recommendations/ My brother lives down there and he talks about the food constantly, I'm planning on eating constantly while I'm down there. jared
Agree on the Boudin Creek Cafe. Always eat lunch at that place when I'm in town for shows.
controlthebleeding
bouldin creek cafe is awesome if you are vegan or vegetarian. it's awesome if you are not. list of restaurants: (V)vegetarian Via313 (located on Rainey street area in Craft Pride bar and on E. 6th next to the Velvet Crown Social Club)best detroit style pizza. Salvation Pizza - located just north of the university of texas. Great thin crust new york style pizza. Not greasy, but quality toppings. bouldin creek cafe (V) franklin bbq - best bbq brisket in austin area - must get there before 10am if you want a chance of eating. it closes when the meat runs out. hoovers restaurant - southern style comfort food. soooooo good. magnolia cafe - i don't even know how to explain the style of food they have. it's just good El Primo - probably one of the best el pastor tacos i've had in austin. If you're gonna hit up a food truck for tacos. i suggest this. El Delicias - Mexican bakery/restaurant. so good 4 breakfast. they have tacos/menudo/etc. but you have to be able to order in spanish. Casino El Camino - Buffalo burger is probably my favorite burger in town. Holy Shit. Bloody Marys are good too. Jackalope - Good burgers and pizza. Good beer. Only cool place besides Casino to drink at on the proverbial "Dirty 6th" area. Barley Swine - If you like sweet breads and the likes (rabbit, cow tongue, foie gras, etc, then by all hit this place up. sooo good. Whip Inn - fusion indian food.. soo good. great beer. the service isn't all that great, but the beer and food makes up for it. dirty martins - grease burgers and homemade milkshakes galore. it's practically a austin landmark. there's tons more restaurants to eat at, but these are off the top of my head. Places to avoid: Chuys - unless you're there for drink specials, they suck.. pure tourist tex mex food. Torchys - we like to call them white people tacos. Guerros - the name says it all. Avoid. Music related: End of an Ear - Record store caters to almost all music, but has a large selection of punk (not vc punk). good prices, great people. Waterloo - This store might be more to your liking. it has a bit of everything, but it caters more to the indie (whatever that means anymore) stuff. Breakaway Music - More big band/jazz stuff, but definitely a place you want to hit up. They always have something i like there. Clubs: Red 7 / Beerland / Mohawk Cool places to see: university of texas towers - you know where whitman shot all those people. there are tours of the towers. genny's little longhorn on sundays - it's chicken shit bingo sunday between 3pm - 8pm. music by dale watson every sunday. Texas state capital - place is quite the spectacle. maybe you'll run into mr goodhair. but probably not. Austin Greenbelt - unless you're not into hiking and all that junk. Enchanted Rock - just look at pics online. it's not in austin, but near. hope this helps.

monk0nuggets
You guys are the best. Controlthebleeding, it's nice to see you're still on and helpful as ever! I checked out Waterloo today. Had to restrain myself, but I did pick up a trio of out of print LPs during their weekly Tuesday evening vinyl sale (Om - God Is Good, Isis + Aereogramme - In the Fishtank, and the Princess Mononoke Soundtrack) Was hoping to hit Franklin's BBQ tomorrow morning at 11, but don't know if I'll be able to make it by 10. Do you really need to get there that early? Also, I'm a coffee fan and would love to check out this bouldin creek cafe place, but it's kind of out of the way (I'm stuck being semi-reliant on a hotel shuttle). Sounds like it's worth a cab ride? Sounds like it's worth a cab ride? if you dont go before 10, don't go, you'll stand there for 30 minutes, then someone will come out and tell you you might not eat. you really have to be there before 10. and that's cutting it close. but it's worth it. ask dynamite kid and jimmythescumbag. bouldin creek cafe is great for food. i'm not a coffee person so i dont know where to get good coffee. i heard epoch next door to breakaway is really good. you can kill two birds with one stone. where exactly are you staying? i can give you a bus schedule and where to go. most places are easy to get to from downtown. if you hit up end of an ear, you can hit up bouldin and el primo. they are literally within 2 to 3 minutes of each other (walking). it's only one bus from downtown too. if i had a car i'd take you around, unfortunately, that's not the case. i love introducing people to places here. if you can, try to hit up hoovers. bouldin creek, magnolia, maybe homeslice, dirty's, casino el camino, and via 313. almost all of those are in the downtown (or near) area. hoovers being the furthest (5 minute drive from downtown), but so freakin' good. try the meatloaf and fried okra. you really can't go wrong with anything there. and whatever you do, don't eat ROPPOLOS PIZZA. place sucks balls. how long are you here for? monk0nuggets
I'm staying at a Marriott a little south of downtown on IH-35 until Friday afternoon, but I'm here for a conference, so all of my days up until 5pm are taken except this morning. Venturing out for BBQ!
controlthebleeding
good, you won't regret Franklin BBQ. but get the brisket or ribs. sausage is ok, but the brisket is where it's at.
lonesomexloveus
magnolia cafe is so good! (i'm a super picky eater and don't eat red meat, so texas with all it's mexican food and the like can be a little dicey for me sometimes) i had homeslice pizza when i was there, and it was super good, but i love most any pizza. ALSO, i haven't eaten there, but the capital city bakery truck looks phenomenal. i follow her food truck on instagram and it's all vegan baked goods; everything from cupcakes to cookies to cakes to cheesecake. have any of you austin-ites ever eaten any of their stuff? David The Gnome
I love you Mike, but Torchy's is absolutely awesome, white-boy tacos or not, they're fantastic I've only been to Austin a handful of times but when I've had Torchy's I've always loved it. With that said, I had some insane BBQ brisket tacos from a food cart around town last week that topped Torchy's for sure.

When it comes to cupcakes I usually i just wipe the frosting because i hate frosting on cupcakes because 9/10 it's way too sweet for my liking. as per usual it was .. the cake was semi dry as well. mind you it was good, but dry. only cupcake i've had in town that was phenomenal was from a place up north i can't remember. i think rise and shine bakery if i'm not mistaken. was the only cupcake i've had that had excellent frosting and a great cupcake. i ate 4 in row. and i dont eat more than one ever. magnolia is soo good and is a austin staple. i usually always order a pancake and it it right off the plate with my hands.. no fork, no syrup. nothing. it's good enough alone. closest place like it is bouldin, except for the fact that bouldin is vegan/vegetarian. nonetheless. it's excellent. same ambiance too. has that austin feel. monk0nuggets
Holy Shit. Franklin's was insane. It was a long, wet, cold wait today, but worth it. Wow. May be hitting the Iron Cactus later. yay or nay?
rustycage
This thread is making me insanely jealous. I've only been to Austin once, in 2009. I absolutely fell in love with it, and have been searching for a good excuse to go back ever since! I'm thinking SXSW 2014 might be in order.
