  1. There's a record fair at The Empty Bottle on Sunday - lots of cool stuff including free food, beer, and records (giveaways by Notes and Bolts, BLVD, Numero, etc...) - https://www.facebook.com/events/146115255541868/
  2. It seems it's going to be unfair either way. If it goes in the suggested direction; those who read the comics don't get to discuss without having to resort to tags. I don't know; I'm trying to figure out how to word it properly without sounding snobby, but if there are folks out there who took the time to dig into all of the facets of the franchise, why should they have to silence themselves for those who don't?
  3. Lathe #5 is now up: http://notesandbolts.bigcartel.com/product/limited-lathe-cut-7 N+B 019 - BIGCOLOUR - I Hope No One Wants To Sleep with Me Tonight "BIGCOLOUR have been blowing our minds ever since Jake Acosta from Teen River passed a copy of the tape his label put out for them onto us. These dudes (and now, dudette) craft ramshackle and lo-fi pop songs that are loud and joyous and absolutely brilliant. This track is no exception, and stands as a highlight in their small but fantastic discography." You can hear the track at the order page. Lathe #3: The Drastics just came in this afternoon and will be mailed out in the coming week.
  4. I'm keeping thorough track of subscriptions from week to week, so I'll know when folks 4 subscribed lathes have ended - and then I'll send an email nudging for renewal.
  5. bumpity! the Cassettes on Tape lathe goes down at NOON on Wednesday and then we'll be putting up lathe #5 by noise pop destructors, BIGCOLOUR.
  6. I think that's just an unavoidable thing when discussing a topic that spans multiple forms of media. The Washington DC thing, for example, happened a good 40 issues ago. In comics time, that was, what, early to mid 2009? I question what denotes a spoiler versus a non spoiler when much of the material in the comics has been floating out there for anywhere between 1 to 10 years. Not trying to cause a fuss by saying that, but it should probably just come with the territory that if folks who don't read the source material are going to engage in talk about the adaptation, that they'll inadvertently see talk of said material in some way no matter how they avoid it. It's all too tied in. In other media franchises, talk of spoilers isn't as heavy. Take a big budget DC film like Batman or Superman, for example; you see that there are certain characters out there that you may not have heard of, but because they're being included in the latest film; it's inevitable you'll find out about their back story. Very few mainstream movie goers knew of Bane outside of the bad 1997 film, but it wasn't considered a spoiler that everyone knew he broke Batman's back in a storyline from 1992 - even though him doing that was a major thread in the 2013 film. Just the same - by the time TWD does get to Negan - which I believe they will - it'll likely be by the time the comic is in the 130's to 140's - a good 30 or 40 issues after the character was introduced and a good 50 or so issues after he was first mentioned in passing reference. My main question is - where is the line drawn? For those who both read the comics and watch the show, it's fun to go back and forth between the two. Those folks don't get to discuss those intricacies in depth if the fear of spoilers is evident. I understand that folks who only watch the show don't want to be spoiled, but again, what dictates a spoiler?
  7. this seems to sum up a large portion of the show's fans' view of it, too. Dialog driven? Too Slow. Tons of zombies? Too much going on. I liked last night's episode - though, at certain points, it definitely felt like they were paying homage to The Shining, what with Phillip playing a charmer one moment and then going nuts another.
  8. i'm constantly forgetting that I have stuff. Atleast once a week, I have to sheepishly grin and ask a friend at Reckless to hold something for me because I have to go home and check to make sure I don't buy a double, hahah.
  9. found QC back in 05; been addicted ever since. shocked that neither NN2S or Perry Bible Fellowship haven't been named yet.
  10. another suggestion for cardio stuff is to get a pedometer to keep in yr pocket and forget about until the end of each day. It's said that humans need to average 10,000 steps - 5 miles - on the daily. I've recently started up with a pedometer and a 1500 calorie diet and I've already seen some small results (by the way, all the folks on here who use My Fitness should friend each ofher; just got the app yesterday after years of using Sparkpeople. Username: AsianVinyl) I don't think 10k in steps on the daily is essential (I've been averaging about 8k), but it definitely gives you a real number to put with yr exercise much in the same way as when counting calories.
  11. it's funny to me how 90% of the bands that were listed in this (very old) thread weren't then, or are now, actually remotely anything resembling underrated.
  12. Hey, dude - posted a link above for a month by month subscription service. At the moment, I don't want to offer anything longer than one month at a time since each month will bring 4 (and sometimes 5) records; but as I get used to it, I'll start to offer three/six/twelve month packages as well.
  13. lathe #4 went up yesterday and you can get it here: http://notesandbolts.bigcartel.com/product/limited-lathe-cut-7 orrrrrrr, if you want to just cut away the weekly haggling and save some money in the process, we're now offering month by month subscriptions: http://notesandbolts.bigcartel.com/product/lathe-cut-7-1-month-subscription
  14. got into jazz through Jamaican music - the Skatalites, Don Drummond, Jackie Mittoo; all of those Studio One players had serious chops. Original '66 era ska is the stuff that tipped me towards the Blue Notes stuff. Coltrane, of course, was a huge favorite. From there, it was the Atlantic era Ornette Coleman and onward towards free jazz, which is the stuff I most favor nowadays. Over the last four or five years, though; I've been casually trying to collect as much of Sun Ra's discography as I possibly can - that's alot, since he has literally hundreds of records floating around out there.
  15. lathe #3: The Drastics, goes down in an hour and a half; so get on it before we post up lathe #4!
  16. best buy are great with customer service, so even if it does end up a cd boxset, i'm sure a refund would be easy. either way, i pulled the trigger. a few years ago, i played my beat up copy of 'It Takes A Nation of Millions...' too many times to count. Getting all of these is too good to pass up.
  17. I think it depends on area. In a city like Chicago - and especially in the neighborhoods around me - tons of folks collect cassettes, so I doubt racks sit out for more than a couple of hours before getting snatched up; definitely makes it worth springing 20 than daily thrifting, you know? hahah. In less dense areas, I could see it being easier...
  18. Adrian, just saw yr order come in. Thanks! Make sure to hit local when the next one goes up on Wednesday afternoon.
  19. i usually just let seam splits pass - but that's too much, given what the cost for the package in its entirety was. Has anyone tried to opt for replacements?
  20. Thanks, man! - If you continue to buy week after week, just hit the shipping option once and then for three weeks or so after, hit local pickup so that you don't get docked for shipping, then I can send four or five to you in one big batch and you can save 12 or 15 bucks. Really, that offers goes to anybody here who wants to take advantage of it! Four lathes a month for $31 shipped. Can't beat that!
  21. YOOOOO! In light of some Chicagoers going to see The Specials tonight, get on this Drastics lathe! Monday bump! Also! We just got in lathe #2, so for the few on here who may have ordered one - we'll have these out by week's end!
  22. $70 is a great deal for a 4x4. i've never purchased anything new from Ikea - CL is always the go to.
