Post-VC: Official Post-Rock/Post-Metal Discussion v.2.0
omik11303 replied to jhulud's topic in Everything Else Message Board
You're saying two different things here, though. Your first sentence is implying that, no matter how good the studio material is, it will always be lacking something because it doesn't have that "live energy." In the second sentence, you seem to say that live music is just in a different category. I wholeheartedly agree with this second sentence. Live music IS different. As an example: Let's say I give Requiem for Hell a 5/10. And then I go see Mono live, and they play Requiem for Hell front-to-back and just absolutely kill it. Energy, mood, technicality - all just off the charts. I'd leave that show giving the SHOW a 10/10. But the album would remain a 5/10, because the studio material is in a completely different category. Nothing they could do with it live would make me change my score of the album. -

This is the crux of it. I suppose I just don't agree. But that's fine! I don't listen to post-rock for the live performances; it sounds like you do, or at least put a lot more stock in the live shows than the recorded stuff. Different strokes. -

Now this is just a head-scratcher. I don't know if there exists a band with a more cathartic in-studio sound than Godspeed. It's hard for me to imagine that seeing them live would make a bit of difference to how I perceive Lift Your Skinny Fists, for example. -

Here's a new one to put on your radar. First track is pretty good. https://drivingslowmotion.bandcamp.com/album/arda On the other hand, that new Lost in Kiev track is really, really bad. Almost unlistenable. Someone tell me if the album is any good when it drops because I don't think I'll be listening. -
I’m assuming I just got unlucky with a hidden defect or something, unless other people are having the same problem.
-
Got my sapphire purple from DW in the other day. Overall the pressing sounds phenomenal, but my copy has a brutal section of popping/snapping/crackling through "In Northern Michigan," rendering that track pretty much unlistenable.

I see your Fourteen Nights at Sea and I’ll raise you A Film in Color. Wouldn’t be surprised if you’re already familiar but you’ll love it if not. -

Listened to the new TPSQ a few times through now (thanks to both Derek and Don!). My one complaint is that it might be a little too slow. I agree that it's hard to find any particular fault; it's really a gorgeous album. My only gripe is that I don't know how much staying potential it's going to have, because it's such a slow burner. I'm usually much more on-board with the sparse instrumentals but I don't quite know what to make of this one at the moment. It'll be interesting to see where I'm at in a month or two. Can't deny the beauty in "Emitter" and "Wreath," however. -

Do you have an advance copy or is this up for streaming somewhere? Just did a quick Google search and couldn't find it up yet. Definitely looking forward to listening, either way. -

Been waiting for this for a while. Stoked! -
I finally caved and pre-ordered the other day. All four songs are incredible, figured the rest can't possibly be bad.

I hate to read this. I was trying to sell my splatter copy on here for like six months last year before someone caught on!

This song is actually the first thing I’ve liked from these guys since their self-titled EP, way back in 2012. Hopefully the rest of the album stands up. August is a ways away though.

Anyone listen to the new album by Wander yet? I'm most of the way through it right now and it's pretty solid. Reminds me a lot of Heron's album from 2017 - definitely by-the-book, but more good than bad. -
Came in here to give a report but @TheWindBlower basically nailed it already. "Anxiety Panorama" absolutely rips and "There You Are (Hiding Place)" is just awesome. Production isn't great but the only song that really suffers from it is "Footsteps at the Pond," in my opinion.

Dang, the ONLY thing I like from Latitudes is their last album. I thought this new song was really bland and uninteresting, but "Old Sunlight" came out of left field for me when it came out - maybe this new one will do something similar. -

Yeah one of their old songs queued up after "Agnus Dei" on Youtube when I was listening the other day and it sounded like a totally different band. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on this one. I've now gone back for a few more listens and if anything it's gotten better. Those grooves on "Penitencia" and "Eleh Ha Devarim" might be too good. -

While we're on the subject of post-metal, that new Labirinto album is incredible. Just finished up my first listen and I know there's a tendency to get overhyped early but this is some of the best music I've heard out of the genre in a long time. All the right levels of energy, riffage, momentum, quality production, balanced vocals, etc... Seriously, don't sleep on this. https://labirinto.bandcamp.com/album/divino-afflante-spiritu -

Had some spare time so I gave this a go. I got about 25 min in, but it's just not for me. Sorta sounds like what would happen if Daturah added some blast beats and mixed in the occasional harsh vocal line (plus some cleans at ~22:00?). That may appeal to some people, but not me. -

People forget that Geneva might feature one of the best drumming performances post-rock has ever seen. -

Gumbo, any word if this will come to vinyl? I'm a big fan of this track. I feel obligated to stick up for I Hear Sirens - if I had to pick ten albums to describe my tastes in post-rock, their LP would probably make the list. These guys are so solid. Don't let some shoddy comparisons turn you away (really, L&M??) - a more accurate FFO would be Four Trees-era Caspian and early Beware of Safety. Listen for yourself if you have the time: https://ihearsirens.bandcamp.com/album/beyond-the-sea-beneath-the-sky
