  1. When it comes to record labels, they'll keep pressing up copies to meet demand. Once demand is met and everybody who currently wants a copy has a copy, then whatever remains in the warehouse is it for the time being. This is the way it works for most labels, indie or other. It could be years or decades before something is repressed, and a lot of that has to do with accumulated demand (or the frustrated tears of RHP fans).

With this resurgence of vinyl, it seems every serious artist out there with an OOP back catalogue is getting the fancy vinyl treatment, but that doesn't mean it's going to stay in print forever. No label wants a warehouse full of product that is nothing more than a shrine to great vinyl fad of two-thousand-and-whatever.

  2. Does anyone who likes this new mark kozelek, also like the pre-admiral fell kozelek? I can't seem to find anyone and it seems that mark now has two very different sets of fans. I've expressed the same sentiment as GreatGreen in the Benji thread. This shit is tired and it feels like a total cash grab while putting out bullshit music he hastily put together in 2 weeks in a studio.

He lost me when his songs began to sound like finger exercises on spanish guitar. Up until then it was all fine and dandy. Pulled me back in with Perils which is up there with his best work. Benji bordered on banal and embarrassing but all the fanfare on that record made me feel like I was in the minority. Fair to say the outlook for this one isn't good.

  3. BEACH HOUSE will release Depression Cherry, the band's fifth album, on 28th August on Bella Union. The album will be released in North America on Sub Pop Records and Mistletone in Australia and New Zealand. Depression Cherry was produced and recorded by the band and Chris Coady at Studio in the Country in Bogalusa, Louisiana.

LP and CD versions of the album will come packaged in a sumptuous red velvet sleeve. As an added bonus Bella Union have an exclusive clear vinyl version of the album for purchase, limited to the first 200 copies bought online from us!! (and Sub Pop have the same deal for the Loser Edition for the US).

  4. So...I told my shop about this far in advance, they ended up getting three boxes. They put one behind the counter for me with a price tag of $90.50.

There might be five emails going back in forth between the time of me telling them about this boxset and receiving it. Did they bump the price because i was nagging them? or because they held it for me? They've always been real good with keeping it at or below retail with any other release. Anyway, i feel pretty pissed about this, should i though? has anyone else seen this price in store? 15$ per record is fair, if that was the retail on the box. The other box sets were gone before i could see the tags on them.

FYI, mine cost $77 from Easy Street in Seattle. Seems stores are just randomly marking these up depending on how much they've been hassled for them. I'd imagine there are some stores who've ordered it in unaware of the amount of pants-wetting going on and priced them at the rrp.

  5. Honestly, why are people all in a twist about artists getting paid and so on? You know that in all likelihood the tracks are probably given over free (or some nominal amount) in lieu of the free publicity this mix vinyl thing is offering the bands. You know, there's a reason why labels like Sub Pop stopped and started the singles club thing -- they're a bitch to run on time and ultimately more hassle than they're worth. I subscribed to their singles club in the late 90's and they gave everybody who subscribed the first year an extra 6 months for free because it was one never-ending fuck-up..

As for VNYL. The more I have to read about it the more incensed I get with every aspect. It was doomed to fail, but perhaps not to the same degree it has as of this moment. There must be a ton of great second hand vinyl out there, I mean shit, if this dude had even bothered to fill a decent inventory that met within the general feel of the 'vibes' there might not be such an uproar but passing off junk vinyl as being something more than it is was idiotic and embarrassing.

  6. That's crazy. Some stores in the UK were selling it for £99 or £120, which I find baffling. The one store I got mine changed it to £99 a few days prior to RSD which was a relief. Even for other releases there was a considerable mark-up difference from store to store across London. In your case though, if you don't want it, see if you can get a refund. Explain your reasons why (extreme mark-up etc) and see what they say. Maybe they made a mistake pricing it.
