    You can't pre-order a surprise!

You can't keep checking your mail one or two days before release date to see if you got the album delivered early...when its a surprise!

You can't scour the internet and make sure you've PO'd every single variant of a total surprise!

In other words, it's a cool marketing tactic that focused more on the music than the collector-competition / consumerism and that just stinks.

I love Om and High On Fire (and I never really thought I would) but there is no comparison between Sleep and those bands. Sonically, there are touches of Sleep in both bands but most of those bands' records have been consistently available (with a few exceptions) and there hasn't been the cultural mystery and fanfare for those bands as neither produced an album of as large of a landmark status that ended up being the bar against which a particular style has been held up to. Sleep have had a mythology of grandeur and rightfully so, I would say. The subsequent bands that were born from Sleep's break up are generally lauded and held in high regard by many but those same three guys aren't going to produce something that gains the status of Jerusalem/Dopesmoker on their own outside of the collective of Sleep as a band proper. They went on to form new bands under their own shadows.

Sleep as a specific group (even lacking the original drummer from their classic, most successful lineup) and their name carry an air of sanctity in their genre and among their fans new and old. I doubt they ever sought that status specifically by doing what they did but their output and the scarcity and limitation of that output only further imbues them with aggrandizement. They had two albums as Cisneros/Pike/Hakius. Holy Mountain was well loved and established a culture of "Sabbath Worship" and Dopesmoker was venerated and used as a rite of passage in the Doom/Stoner metal community. It was bootlegged and scarce and it was also a major feat of execution and creativity. Both albums were out of print or non-existant on vinyl for a long time as well. That's why the fanfare over Sleep is and will likely remain greater than it is for Om and HOF. And all that carries over into the present with the weight of their unlikely reunion in 2009 and subsequent tours and then the idea that a whole new album was a possibility spurned by the release of a warmly received single in 2014. Sleep has been an institution longer as well obviously. Their fanbase has been gestating with their material for a long time and I'd say they are more popular now than they've ever been.

Took off work early and scored a green from 1234Go. Bummed I didn't take the day off, like I was thinking I should. I could have easily picked up a split copy up north of me. I had a friend who was close by there, but he was at a docs appointment and couldn't get out of the office in time.

Let's take a breath and all remember what happened with Radiohead's last album on white and how we all freaked out. I ended up buying two copies because I was scared one wasn't going to come through. Then they were fairly plentiful and now you can get one for under $35. That band is bigger than Sleep(though they shouldn't be) and that record was limited to 9000. Yes, I can say this calmly now that I have a green, but I think all of you will get one. TMR is just running this through the hype machine and those of us who actually love the band are shitting ourselves as we see flippers flip. I still hope I can stumble across a split.

They were all long sold out by the time I remembered to check the site, but honestly I  am not that impressed with this first round of color variants. I'm totally content with getting the black 1/500 180 gram (which all limited variants should be anyway, imo) and holding out for a future repress if it catches my eye.

But seriously, how is the "deluxe" not 180 gram? $70 for a box and flag is crazy, even for relapse. I know it's a big deal for a band to be on their roster, and Yob is possibly my favorite band ever, but I wish they weren't on relapse. They cut corners on vinyl releases and only seem to care about whatever flavor of the week color variant they can apply to a pre order. I'd much rather Yob still be on metal blade or 20 buck spin or join southern lord. Give me heavy weight vinyl with actual thick gatefold covers or printed sleeves. Oh well. Psyched for new Yob!

Today is the preorder day for Yob's new LP, 'Our Raw Heart,' out June 8, 2018 on Relapse Records.  There are some preorders on Relapse now, but the most limited ones don't appear to have been put up yet..

Whatever they did it would have still caused a lot of people to miss out on the /100. I just got lucky seeing the initial post here and then refreshing. It was stupidly expensive, so you can find solace in that.

Ah, damn.  Would've loved the deluxe, but I just got the email like 10 minutes ago and it sounds like they were LONG gone by then. Oh well, got the separate versions.  I am glad they both went up at the same time instead of months apart or something.

Thanks guys for posting. I finished up mastering the release over the Holidays. It's a special release for me. These songs took on a new life/vision while playing with the full band and it became important to me to document and release them in some way. I managed to work out a fair (albeit expensive) licensing deal w/ the BBC and here we are. A friend of Gunface's, Dáire Lynch, created the oil painting while listening to the "WYW" album as well. We all thought it was great and were honored to include it as the cover art.

It's going to be a busy year, this is just the beginning.
I'll try and post here more when able.
    Thanks people.
