  1. my only complaint is that we didn't see when gomez got shot or when junior actually got told. otherwise, great episode -- super intense and no clue what happens next
  2. if I didn't have a job and didn't want to have a social life... I'd totally buy this game is it just me, or is worrying about graphics in gta like worrying about the plot in a porn?
  3. am I the only one who is constantly looking at the clock and agonizing over how they're going to end the episode in a cliff-hanger? I mean, it's awesome, but it's also super duper annoying that every episode leaves me waiting for more
  4. it did, but then it was gone all of a sudden and there wasn't anywhere* to get them! *for a good price
  5. second time going through it, and I'm definitely enjoying it. providing good background music while I work, and I mean that in a good way
  6. I respectfully disagree. I think jesse feels nothing but guilt at this point and isn't the least bit worried about saving his own hide. I'm not saying that he'll admit to anything, but I don't think he thinks he deserves to be "saved". I'm pretty sure he's going to kill himself or put himself into a situation where someone (walt?) will have to kill him. either that, or he'll have a serious come-to-jesus moment, at which point anything can happen...
  7. what about the part that says "sold exclusively online. limited to 120"? that's not supposed to be a smart-ass question, especially since none of us have any clue what's actually going on. my guess: they pressed 36 copies of the record on each of the 6 colors (making 216 total records), and then they cut along ~breakpoints in the records and just mix-and-match them into the 120 combos (there are 6 inside colors, 5 middle colors, 4 outside colors). then if you want to play track 1 or 4, you have to insert the middle and inside pieces as ~adapters. either that, or they pressed a bunch of 7"s with songs 3 and 6, some 10" rings with songs 2 and 5, and some 12" rings with songs 1 and 4. I'd try to think of the most practical way of doing this, but "practical" and "glassjaw" don't exactly go together in any case, I'm going to have to think seriously about wasting some money on this...
  8. in biostat, our MS students occasionally get RAs in places like the school of nursing doing t-tests and things like that (I worked as a physician's personal statistician during my MS program), while others get TA positions teaching intro stat courses to other grad students. that said, I know epidemiology grad students have a much tougher time getting funding, so I'm aware of the fact that I've lived a pretty sheltered academic life paper 1 from the dissertation is published, paper 2 is under revision, paper 3 has been submitted, and paper 4 is in preparation. in addition to those, I'll have another ~8 papers accepted/submitted by the end of the year, so hopefully I'll be in position to get a faculty position in the next year or two
  9. and as for the "wait vs. jump straight to grad school" debate, I'd think it just depends on your current financial situation and how you plan to pay for school. if you need money /now/ (e.g., you've got a family to support), you'd probably be better off waiting until things are better financially. if you don't need money and you're "good enough" to get an RA/TA position to cover tuition + stipend, I see no reason why you'd want to wait. grad school + no experience is surely better than undergrad + 2 years of experience, right? if not, I would think that that would defeat the purpose of going to grad school. then again, in (bio)statistics, you typically get an RA position that's essentially like having a job, so after 5 years in grad school I've essentially got ~5 years of work experience. I'm not sure how different this is from other fields money issues aside, the main benefit of going straight to grad school is that you never lose the "student" mindset, as study habits can be tough to re-learn
  10. I passed! yay! phd defense was significantly easier than the prelim / thesis proposal I did a year and a half ago my reward: making an appointment to get a minnesota tattoo (the outline of the state, not a portrait of a gopher) and having my first sips of beer with my advisor (I'm straightedge, but bayesian statisticians are notorious for being alcoholics, so I figured this would serve as the final step toward becoming a bayesian) I can't wait to tell people "that'll be Doctor Quick, please"
  11. "omg! my defense is in 13.5 hours!" bump. not sure I've ever been this freaked out for a two week period in my life... july 11 AM: submit first draft of thesis july 11 PM: girl I've been dating more or less breaks up with me (not much of a surprise given that I'm moving soon, but still) july 12: advisor complains about how something relatively minor was written july 14 AM: submit revised version july 14 PM: advisor hates this version more than the first july 15: submit new revised version; everyone's happy july 16 at 3AM: submit thesis to committee july 16 at 1PM: start packing for my move, realize that records take a hella long time to pack july 24: start loading car for 8 hour drive july 25: make 8 hour drive, pray that my records survive every bump (everything is fine) july 26: unload car, u-haul, buy TV july 27: make 8 hour drive back home july 28: start putting together slides for defense and on top of all of that, I have to get everything finalized by wednesday otherwise my degree won't be "conferred" until the end of august, which my soon-to-be employers at mizzou won't take too kindly. and after all of this, I have to plan for a trip to montreal this weekend, and then get ready to "officially" move down to columbia, mo... totally freaking out here.
  12. if I can only grab one thing, I'd grab my laptop since it has all of my dissertation work on it. everything's backed up, but it's backed up to my NAS and my other laptop, both of which are in my condo!!! (btw, there's nothing else alive in my condo, and I'm in the process of moving, so all of my records are in my other apartment)
  13. I know they played "ny-quil" at the mpls show when supporting Crash Love, so they at least occasionally play old songs. that said, I'd doubt that they'd play too many songs from the pre-jade days and afi seems a little too big to play at the varsity theater in mpls, but maybe I'm just living in the past... if I weren't moving to columbia, mo in two weeks, I'd totally be at that show
  14. but is it more unsettling than a picture of the aftermath of the bombing? all this is doing is humanizing a guy who everyone wants to dehumanize that being said, RS is clearly trying to be provocative in an effort to stir up magazine sales, and, despite some people throwing a hissy fit, I'm sure it will work. not the first time someone used ~controversy to get attention, won't be the last, and at least RS had the sense to write "The Bomber" and "Monster" right there on the cover rather than leaving their opinions vague, enticing you to read the whole article to find out what they think of him
  15. in that case, he'd be topless and have boobs
  16. I'm shocked that people are offended by things like this in 2013... the cover says "The Bomber", not "Look who's single!" or "Everyone loves a rebel!" with hearts flying in from the background anyhoo, I'm sorry that not all terrorists / bad guys look evil. maybe RS will release a variant cover where they've used markers to make him look like a cross between hitler and the devil, and then they can draw a beard on him to make sure you know he's an islamic terrorist, not a sex symbol
  17. I think your first question is pretty much the main question in this whole case: what happened between zimmerman's phone call and trayvon being on top of him and punching him? I also disagree with your assertion that he "rightfully beat his ass". were you there? if so, you probably should have testified in court. if not, I'd suggest not thinking it's your right to beat someone up -- if you pick the wrong guy, he may kill you in self-defense. and it looks like zimmerman's suing NBC for defamation by misquoting him during his call to the police
  18. Someone: [Question about show] Actor/Actress: [Answer] Repeat. nothing too ~revealing
  19. I've got the glass passenger if you want it...
  20. I don't think they need kg and pierce to /lead/ the team, they just need them to be solid contributors. kg, pierce, joe johnson, deron williams, and lopez is a pretty good starting lineup, and kg and pierce can teach lopez and johnson a thing or two. and jason kidd is their head coach? this will be interesting... as for boston... when will rondo be back? december or january? um... how 'bout them patriots? and do the celtics have their 2014 first round draft pick?
  21. I haven't been able to watch, but did the commentators say "wtf?" when the wolves drafted another pg, or did they know a trade would be going down? maybe that was just flip saunders giving an homage to kahn
