  1. The only consistent thing he has said over and over is his alibi in which he states that he was playing video games, spoke to his brother's boss, spoke to his mom, went to the bonfire and came home. Every time he recounts this story there's no deviation from the timeline he gives. There are some slimy motherfuckers in Wisconsin. Ken Kratz and his annoying woman's voice needs a punch in the neck.

  3. Au contraire, I believe the naivete resides with those who can't possibly fathom why I would shit on such a sacred cow.
  4. I do plenty of that. The point is to address the reaction I get when I tell people that I hate The Beatles. I don't understand why people are so offended by that statement or can't possibly understand how I could feel that way.
  5. The Velvet Underground, Black Sabbath, Howlin' Wolf, The Stooges, Sonic Youth, The Rolling Stones, Peter Tosh, Damien Jurado, The Minutemen, Funkadelic, Betty Davis, Au Pairs, Neu!, Animal Collective, Candi Staton, Spoon, William Onyeabor, Eric Dolphy, Wolf Parade...
  6. Why do people look at me like I just stabbed their grandmother when I tell them that I hate The Beatles? It's true. I've never liked them. I think their early catalog is the worst and their "experimental" period is boring. If a Beatles' song comes on the radio, I change the station. If I walk into a store and a Beatles' song is playing, I leave. I wouldn't dare date/marry a Beatles fan.
  7. There's a great documentary called Don't Think I've Forgotten about the Cambodian music scene pre Khmer Rouge. It's on Amazon streaming. http://www.dtifcambodia.com
  8. I'm aware of Tom Ze but I'll check out the rest. Thanks.

  10. Sublime Frequencies also puts out great comps like Pop Yeh Yeh, Thai Pop Spectacular and Cambodian Cassette Archieves: Khmer Folk & Pop Music Vol. 1. They also put out Saigon Rock and Soul: Vietnamese Classic Tracks 1968 - 1974. I've been looking for this for a while. I would like to find a copy under $40.
  11. The only problem with Mississippi Records is that they can be tough to find. I wish they had a website.
  12. Definitely what I'm looking for. Thanks, I'll check it out.
  13. Does anyone listen to any worldbeat or world music, outside of reggae, that's worth checking out? I have a small collection of about fifty records and I'm always on the lookout for something new/interesting. A recent discovery, which I addressed in another post, is Tribo Massahi-Estrelando Embaixador. It's a Brazilian psych record from the early 70s that plays like one long, loose jam. It has barely left the turntable around here. There are moments that remind of Fela Kuti but it's not as funky as Kuti's records. If you're a fan of Brazilian psych, I can't recommend this one enough. If you're interested, search Discogs for a bargain. They are retailing for around $35 but I found a much cheaper copy on Discogs. Another record that I've been playing a lot is Ecstatic Music of the Jemma El Fna that was released on Sublime Frequencies. They're a label that I trust so I picked this one up not knowing anything about it and I couldn't be happier. This is a recording that takes place in the central square of Marrakesh. Apparently, musicians gather every night to play, for mostly locals, in the square. These are working class Moroccans singing songs that address social and political injustice. Recording is prohibited so this is a really special peek into some amazing music that you would normally have to travel to Morocco to experience.
  14. I can recommend a few. Actually, I'm going to start a world beat/world music recommendation thread after I post this. People have already mentioned Sun City Girls. They had a long and interesting run that began along side other Phoenix punk bands like J.F.A. but I wouldn't call SCG a punk band. Their discography is rather large but favorites tend to be Torch of the Mystics and 330,003 Crossdressers From Beyond The Rig Veda. I also really like Sumatran Electric Chair. They're not for everyone but if you're a fan of Middle Eastern or West African music or The Residents---then give them a try. Even though I love Krautrock, I'm not a huge fan of Harmonia. But I really like and recommend picking up Deluxe. Harmonia was Michael Rother from Neu! and Moebius and Roedelius from Cluster. This means lots of electronic/synth sounds and beats with some guitar for punctuation. Brian Eno was a huge fan and joined them/ripped them off at one point. The box set mentioned is really for the true fan but if Harmonia sounds interesting then I suggest you start with Deluxe. The record I can't recommend enough is Tribo Massahi. If you like Brazilian psych or Fela Kuti, I suggest you grab this. It has been on heavy rotation around here the last few weeks. While the record is broken into songs, each side sounds like a long jam session that flows seamlessly from one song to the next without interruption. I found a copy for $22 on Discogs which is close to cost. It retails in the $35 range. While I know and like Don Cherry, I'm not familiar with this release especially since it has never been released. Cherry played with Ornette Coleman and Charlie Haden. He put out records under his own name as well. He's also the father of Neneh and Eagle-Eye Cherry. If you like jazz, then check him out. The Popol Vuh record is also highly recommended. Another Krautrock band that's really just Florian Fricke and a host of collaborators, Popol Vuh is like nothing else. While Krautrock tends to be associated with synthesizers, Fricke moved away from electronica early on and developed his own sound. This record is a beautiful and dramatic soundscape that is both moody and moving. I almost forgot about Doug Hream Blunt. I picked up a two song 12" single last spring that left me wanting more. Blunt creates a funky groove and delivers sexy lyrics with a laid back tone that don't sound dated especially if you dig Ariel Pink. The 12" is a remix so I'm not sure what blunt creates without being mixed by someone else but I'm definitely checking out the full length. I'm not sure about the rest of the list but I may check out a few.
  15. Interesting. I thought I recently read that manual transmission is making a comeback. I just chalked up their decline to lazy Americans not wanting to learn how to drive a stick. It definitely comes in handy when renting a car outside the U.S.
  16. I have a Mazda 3 and I love it but the gas mileage isn't so great. I have a 2010 so this may have improved with newer models. The main reason I bought it was because they offered manual transmission and I can't imagine driving an automatic since I've never owned one.
  17. I love Hemingway but I hate Old Man and the Sea. I've tried to like it but I find that I just don't give a damn about the old man.
  18. I didn't love it but I didn't hate it. It was interesting to see Scout as an adult as well as a different side of the Finch family but not strong enough to recommend.
